General Nutrient Schedule question

More a general question though specifically for growing in soil. Should you add nutrients proactively at certain stages of the lifecycle? Or wait until the plant asks/needs them? Or is it dependent on other factors like soil composition or growing style?

I grow in soil and take a proactive approach. I start earlier than some others with very low dose of nutrients and always pay attention to what the plant is telling me. With photo's I don't feel so stressed since I can control the schedule to make it work. With auto's I'm more attentive because it's going to flower ready or not. I personally like soil because I find it more forgiving. The soil and growing style has an impact. Real dirt outside has a lot of buffering capacity and you can relax more. In a made up soil (potting soil) you still have buffering and beneficial bacteria but usually not to the same extent as what Mother Nature makes but it's nowhere as fussy as hydro. Also how hard you push the soil makes a difference. A big plant in a small pot is more demanding of attention than the same plant growing in a larger pot. One thing I've found that helps a lot are fabric pots. They make overwatering more difficult and allow more oxygen to get to the roots which helps growth. The downside is the increased evaporation so you need to water more frequently and since you are going through more water you need to think about nutrients you are giving to the plant and NOT blindly following package directions that say put X amount per liter of water.

So it sounds to me like you really need to understand your grow setup and what your set up can provide to really know when you need to start providing nutrients. Which means experience and not going off what the nute bottles suggest. If you use the same soil, light, etc over and over and are finding that on week X, the plant is lacking something, you know the next time to add nutrients around that time to compensate. Maybe you can be reactive the first few times that happens but then can be proactive in later grows. Does that sound about right?

All elements in the grow make a difference. Training, substrate, light. Temps. Humidity. Better to be proactive then reactive. Leaves don't repair themselves. Once damaged they will obviously be less efficient, or get cut off and be a waste of the plants energy growing. Good luck and happy growing 🌱
