Soil water absorption

EasyName
EasyNamestarted grow question 2 years ago
Hey, has anyone had an issue where the soil doesn't absorb water properly, so only the first few cm of soil gets wet but the rest just stays dry? Is there a way to make the soil more water friendly? (Using light mix soil)

Unless you are trying to do a super stealth grow or want one of the Worlds smallest cannabis plants, a half litre pot is nowhere near enough room, a 10 litre pot should be a minimum for an auto outdoors. Anyway, to solve your current problem, sit your pot in a small pot of water so that the soil sucks up through the bottom of the flower pot. Fill the pot so that the water comes about half way up the flower pot and wait until you can see moisture at the surface of the soil inside the flower pot. You may need to top up the soaking pot if all the water gets sucked up too quickly. After this, in future when you water, always water to run off, that is, water coming out of the bottom of the flower pot and this will prevent your soil from becoming "hydro-phobic" once again. Hope this helps, Organoman.

I only now saw that you grow in the bowl (it's really not a pot). The earth is only a few centimeters thick anyway... The plant forms a taproot that does not spread. You can grow a plant in half a liter, some have already done here. But then under the best conditions and not outside. So as the others write, big pot and good soil for outside and it works. Unfortunately your setup won't work...

You wanna find something like a wetting agent it sounds like. This breaks the surface tension of the water. There’s natural ones like yucca. Just search for wetting agent soil or something. I had a mix that needed same thing and it helped quite a bit

You grow outdoors. Then use sand and compost to loosen the soil. Then continuous drip irrigation. This gives the water time to penetrate the soil without running off the surface.
