I heard it was a high school teacher from Vancouver ( Jeffery McMallahan) who devised that since weed plants are five fingered that 4 times 5 is roughly 20 so ….4:20 for short .

I’ve heard it started in the 70s or so from some kids who would meet after school at 4:20 to blow trees behind the bleachers.. who knows tho
