Many of my attempts don't make it past seedling.

What could be the problem? Done 3 grows now. Each time germinated several seeds. I can almost always get a tap root but when I plant, many never sprout and those that do sprout, half remain small and never grow past 2 little leaves. I'm always growing autos.

I think you're overwatering them and thus drowning them. They don't need a lot of water, what they need is humidity - and NO NUTES. I only grow autos and I grow in ProMix because I prefer to control the nutes they get and when they get them. Here's MY method: I put my seed in a glass of water for 24 hours or until they start to crack and sink to the bottom (I do NOT wait for the taproot to emerge). I then take the pot they're going to finish in (I prefer 3 gallon pots and autos hate being transplanted) and moisten the soil in the center with PH'd water (between 6.0 and 6.5), poke a small hole about 1cm deep and place the seed in it and JUST cover it. I then invert a pot saucer over the top so it is in complete darkness and place it in my tent with the lights on for warmth (you could choose any other WARM area) and I wait for 3 days before checking on it. If it has popped, the saucer comes off and is placed under veg lights or, if outside, shaded light. I take a kitchen hand towel and soak it in water (this can be tap water) and encircle the seedling so it is in a lot of humidity but still has access to fresh air. For the next couple of days, I only water that towel - some of the water will, obviously, soak into the soil but far away from the seedling. When the first true leaves emerge and become strong, I will remove the towel and lightly water out away from the seedling so as to not disturb the root structure... watering AWAY from the plant will encourage the roots to grow to find the water... At this point, you can also get rid of the shading - if you're growing in a tent, keep the lights at LEAST 18" away from the plant as it will grow trying to get TO the light. Then it's just a matter of giving it a little drink when the soil dries out making sure the PH is within range... NO NUTES for about 2 weeks and then only 1/4- 1/2 strength. Good luck... you CAN do it!

Guessing to much water. Add some perlite to your soil mix to help. Or to many nutrients. Potting soil is usually to strong for little ones.

If you ain't making it past the seedling stage then you have any issue with your substrate. Either your source for your tap root is too toxic (salt, overwatering, too high a mix for your seedling). Are you adding nutrients? If so stop. You don't need water until you see them have true leafs and even then you can wait for a few days To get them started I suggest you make it simple. Get some rock wool cubes and get a root stim mix 2ml/L and lay them on a drip tray and after a few days they should be up and happy. Now because you are growing in rock wool and if you germinate you seeds in it which you can. Be careful and don't turn on your light until you notice they have taken hold and pushed up a little OK. They don't need light until they are fully up. But you can turn it off after you see it pushing up. If you buy rock wool cubes for growing or even a airy spongey will do all you need is for the roots to be able to grow through it. Just make sure you don't cook the seed. As if you turn on the light and haven't fully germ it which you don't need to do. Just put in water for 12-24 hrs until it cracks and put the seed in the little hole or make a hole and place the seed in a couple MM down from the top of the seed I mean it only goes down a couple mm. After 24hrs you can turn your light on and if they still pushing up just put something close the hole for shade on the seed Feel free to DM to let me know exactly what you are doing and how you start and so on and I'll try help get you started the way you are doing cause I plant in soil all the time. Good luck.

Hi! :) Maybe try another watering method. It's impossible to tell waht you do wrong by the info you provided, but it's often overwatering. The small roots can't take in much water during the first 2 weeks. That's why air humidity should be high. So, water them once fully and leave them alone until the pot is really light. :) Good luck!

Ph and overwatering looking at your photo are biggest issues. That burn could be related to too much food at the start too..

Please list what is in you substrate. For direct germination you want plain organic compost with 20% perlite for air and drainage and around that the soil with amendments so the seedling grows out to the nutrients and doesn’t die from toxicity
