Avoiding dumping off

Tropicalstorm
Tropicalstormstarted grow question 10 months ago
Hi guys! It's been a while! I'm trying to get back in the game, but I got a HUGE problem: I lose all my seeds to dumping off. I've tried different substrates, different sizes of pots, different weather, to no luck. Is there a fungicide I can use? (Continue)

This is my problem with jiffy pucks, they hold a shit ton of wtter. (And, often too low pH out of the box) did you also do some home surgery? looks like it's been tinkered with 😜 fool proof - 7030 coco/perlite or 5050 sphagnum peat or soil / perlite. Water and let it drip dry for a bit. Seedlings don't need fertilizer so all good with 6 - 6,5 pH. Small pot a solo cup doen't matter, but should match size of a sprout. loosely fill and very lightly tamp down. compress a spot with finger or thumb in cener no more that 1/2" deep. the compression ensures it can't 'fall' deeper into substate and if you filled loosely it stays nice and nice and fluffy everywhere else. Loosely cover and lightly tamp down. you can read into facing crown this way or that, or not have to remember anything and make sure it is sidways. Even if upside down, still a good chacne it sprouts just fine, though delayed. If it fails doing that, it's an old ass seed or your water / substrate pH was deadly. If your soil is hot, you should run an excess amount of water through the small pots to dilute the amended nutrients. Small amount is fine, a lot is bad. You don't technically need nutreints the first week, though some small level will improve growth rate. Finding that middle ground is worth it. Don't dig around.. don't poke .. don't prod. if it hasn't sprounted in 3-5 days just wait longer, lol.. after 10+ you can start to assume it rotted. I find most just don't germinate as long as i wait 10-14 days before digging up. just some seed chilling doing nothing. keep it moist. don't let top 1" dry like normal with soil, of course. sorry if i covered too many basics, but just keep it simple and he plant does all the work.

Thanks guys. After 3 days and no sprout I did dig around a little, that's when I spotted that the taproot was very thin. I'm going crazy on this, but I'll try some of the methods here.

I haven't used jiffy pellets for a while but I did find they held onto a lot of moisture. The way I got better success was by soaking the pellets and shaking a load of water out of them, then I put the seed in water for 24hr before putting it on the pellet, I found that 24hr period was enough for the pellet not to be to moist for the seed and had a lot better results.

How long did you leave it just 3 days? Did it even break the surface or did you just dig it out like that after 3 days? I use jiffy’s every time and they can sometimes take several days if conditions aren’t perfect. It looks like it should of been fine as there’s your tap root and the shell is cracked.

Sprinkle cinnamon over the top layer where you expect your plant to sprout. It's a natural fungicide. When you water avoid watering the stem. Water around the plant not directly where it comes out of the substrate. Also try to lower your humidity. I have sprouted and grown out plants with a rh of 30 before.

There is a product from the nursery called no damp., or you can simply sprinkle a pinch or two of cinnamon around your babies and water in. Cinnamon works just as good as no damp.

I've used Jiffy with no issues before but I don't like them. They mold very easily and I'm not a huge fan of Peatmoss The pic you uploaded does not look like dampening off to me, more like it failed to separate its self from the shell and came out backwards or something. keeping the plants in a crazy high RH will enable dampening off. watering with other pro-plant bacteria and fungi will also help fight it off. Maybe try soaking them for 12 hrs and then directly planting them into the medium. or just directly planting them into the medium. I would aim for smaller pots 4" vs plugs but thats just me, if its an autoflower you do not want to be transplanting them at all. It bothers them and can cause them to go into early flower, you want to plant them directly into the final pot. Good Luck!

@masterofsmeagol that was a brand new jiffy, I just let it sit in water, pressed out the excess and then put the sprouted seed on it. 3 days later, no new watering, and this happened.

Eazy-Plugs - nur leicht gewässert, konstant 26-28°C (Heizmatte) und 75-95% RH (Mini-Gewächshaus) + 2 Tage Zeit = gesunde, kleine Pflanzen.👌

Like those fungicides they put in vegetable seeds, could I do that without harming the plant? I'm all for organic but I lost 5 seeds to this. The weather is cold and it's not even raining, all my carrots, tomatoes and eggplants have sprouted with no dumping off, I don't see why this is happening.

I use peat pellets after paper towels. I germinate with the paper towel method and then put them in the pellets under the light and cover with humidity dome. Maybe there's some left over pathogen? Are you using new stiff or qt least cleaning? It just looks like the pellets dried out to me. Thsts just my two cents though and just from a quick glance. Maybe check the pellets more consistently? A lot has to do with genetics as well. Some seeds are just junk. Or they've gone bad. Best of luck! Hope you get it straightened out!
