Plants totally dying in a matter of days

Can someone please look over this week and last week of my diary? I've lost two massive plants in the span of a couple days time. One may have been rootbound (in 50 gals) and this is in a 20gallon. Roots did smell a little musty. Should I try a peroxide flush? Any other ideas?

Damn... I don't know what to say except that I'm growing here in Maine myself and it HAS been a bitch of a season! And I chose THIS year to do my first-ever outdoor grow... It sure sounds to me like root rot - but that wouldn't make any sense if the ground underneath them was dry! I know you want to learn - and maybe someone else will be able to point you in a logical direction - but you've asked the commercial grower and I'll echo what he said: shit happens... and 1 (now 2) plants in 4 years... you shouldn't be ashamed!! The humidity has been grotesque, the heat, the bugs, the fungus, the wind, the everything... I'd take this opportunity to, as you said, to spread your grow out a little bit to get better air flow through the rest of your grow. One thing popped into my head as I was reading what the commercial grower said to you... I've just recently read a rather crazy article about how we're planting trees (bear with me) the wrong way... that we encourage them to become rootbound... that we should instead of digging a nice round hole, dig a square hole (sounds daffy to me) and KEEP THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE SLANTED, planting the tree at the top of the little hill so the roots are encouraged to grow DOWN, not AROUND... So all of that to say, if these were clones, maybe they DID get rootbound in their circular pots and needed more encouragement to grow DOWN... like bottom watering at the beginning? Just a thought.... (and most of that thought was a little weird!)... Good luck, man... I think we here in Maine, like in so many other parts of the world, are going to have to contend with conditions we've never had to contend with before... but onward and upward... Good luck.....

I agree with DutchDoobie that it’s likely been over watered since you mentioned you had a heavy rain. Seems weird that it would collapse that fast, but if the soil starts smelling funky it’s gone anaerobic which is bad. Hydrogen Peroxide oxidizes ‘things’ in the soil and water but most importantly it then releases O2 which is what the roots really need. You could also try pushing a pen or something vertically into the soil to provide a pathway for air to get to the roots. Space a bunch of these in a circle about halfway to the edge of the pot. Don’t go crazy with the holes but enough to help get air in without damaging the roots too much.

High, The root rot is caused by poor soil aeration or over watering. You can still save her but you have to act FAST!!! Mix one part 3% percent hydrogen peroxide with two parts water and pour it over the plant's root system with a watering can. This will kill off the bacteria which causes root rot. After that let the soil dry out (almost) completely. And cut the brown and yellow leaves. You want the plant to focus on the good leaves and her roots. Goodluck!!!

Your plants are over watered and possibly have root rot, based on what your diary says and your description of how the soil smells. You need to look at those roots, ASAP. If it is root rot, you're in for some work. You'll need to pull all the sludgy soil away from your roots and then clip out all the discolored and rotten/rotting roots. Replant in fresh medium and hope for the best. Good luck, I hope his helps.
