I've never used an herb dryer before and I'm not sure how well it would do for drying buds, but I'll stick a link that might be helpful to you at the bottoms of my post. So, I'm going to run through the old fashioned method for you:
60°F and 60% relative humidity is where you want to be during the hang dry. It should last around 10-14 days before it's ready to trim.
You want your stems toast least crack and break a little when you bend them, before you trim.
When it's ready, trim up the buds and put them in something that seals up tight. Mason jars and proper lids, a bucket with a gamma-seal lid, Grove bags, C-Vault, heck, some people still use paper bags. I don't recommend paper bags though, as it makes your buds taste like, you guessed it, a paper bag.
Open up the containers twice a day for 20 minutes each time. It helps move stale air out and get fresh air in there. After you do that for two weeks, switch to burping the containers once a day for the next two weeks.
