Feeding amounts and scheduling

I'd say around a liter per watering in soil. My rule of thumb, same for many other growers, is that you water with 10% of the pot size. I rarely water until i see runoff, and once i see it, i immediately stop watering that plant. It pushes nutrients out of your soil that your plant could be using. You probably won't need to water every day. Stick your finger into the medium and see how dry it is for the first few inches. If it's just dry on the very top, hold off until the next day. Overwatering can really mess with a plant, especially once you get the medium to a swampy-wet consistency. Swampy soil will most definitely stunt growth and rot roots to the point where it could kill your plants. Some people, including me, also like to lift their pots to see how light they are. Once you get the feel for it, you can tell almost immediately if your plant needs watered or not. too many factors that vary ... you don't pick the volume.. the makeup and amount of substrate will dictate how much you need to add. if soil -- enough for minimal runoff.. always ensure entirety gets wet. dry pockts are bad. (Runoff in this context is a tool for when toxicities arise, but in absence of those runoff only wastes your fertilizer and amendments already in the soil. soilless -- 10% runoff or more, i'd err on high side, if any. this runoff volume enables you to reset the EC of substrate each time you irrigate to avoid buildup of nutrients... 1.3-1.5EC feed every single irrigation with 10% or a bit more runoff is the easy button if your mix is well-balanced for the plant and environment.. soil and sphagnum peat based soilless -- use 50% perlite or similar (in total... some soils come with a bit included.. use algebra to determin how much to add to get to 50%). With a coco base, 30% is enough. Coco holds 2/3rds the volume of water as sphagnum peat... you can see why the suggestion becomes 70/30 ... it'll acutally work out to very similar volumes of water required for same sized pot under these circumstances. If you want to use a consistent volume each time you water, don't pick this number out of a hat. Simply water at the same point -- as judged by weight of the pot. If you do this, it will require same volume of water each time and you can avoid leftover/waste. can always just toss it in next batch too. shouldnt be "wasted" either way.
