there are other plants that look similar to marijuana seedlings.
do not fiddle with the seed. Disturbing them once you start the process isn't the best option. Better to just stay the course. As long as that top 1/2" doesn't dry out, it'll germinate with just as high of a success rate, no worries. Peat can be acidic, so as long as not in some crazy range, should be fine.
whatever method you settle on, just do it and walk away... can check on it 1/day but don't dwell on it... it leads to ideas like.. "maybe, i'll just dig around with a toothpick.." and while that may help your nerves, it's going to kill plants, lol. After you do it a few times you'll treat it more like a 2nd child :P
use more perlite in future pots. 50/50 with soil or sphagnum peat moss will make overwatering virtually impossible. Also, plenty of o2 for the roots at this ratio. doesn't have to be perlite.. any drainage amendment as long as not too chunky. This will increase how often you have to irrigate, but it is worth it.
