chasv77answered grow question 5 years ago I would start with those fiber cups that are about the size of a small ice cream cone. You can grow out the seedling for about 7 days or so, then
bury the whole thing, in your permanent soil.
I religiously use that method , as it allows lots of soil for that first week of root grow, and not disturbing the roots, when you transplant.
The trick is to keep the fibers damp (spray the outside of the cups as well), when germinating the seed. before transplant. After transplant, when watering that seedling, I spray water over it, till it almost quivers, then pour water around the fiber cup perimeter, to keep the soil nice and damp against the fibers. That softens/breaks down the fibers so the roots can punch through the fiber mesh and tap into your perm soil. This will not delay growth, with roots trying to breakout.
TIP: Completely bury the cup, as any extrusion will act like a wick, and dry your soil out faster, as well as stunting the seedling growth.
