Clone on 12/12

Radioweedstarted grow question 8 months ago
Fast question, I just cloned my plant before putting it to flower. Now the clones and the mother plant are in the same tent with 12/12 light schedule. Will the clones start to flower right on or do they need around 4 weeks to mature before flowering like when growing from seed?

prob best to remove them from the tent till they make roots and grow up a bit before flipping to flower. They won't yield much if you just cut them. I like to take clones in veg vs flower.

I just did this with all my reg seeds. out of the 6 plants 4 different strains it took about 3-4 weeks for them to show sex from the date I cut them. Takes a little bit due to they start working on the roots first.

Clones are the sane age as the mother plant. They need time to root prior light change.

The clones are the same age of the mother, so they will start to flower if they are at 12/12, one thing you could do (if possible) is flower outdoors and keep the tent vegging 18/6

I have never done this as I always let clones root up and grow a bit to avoid any more stress on them. I think that you will possibly have a bit of a time difference between them since they can’t really start producing till they develop roots first.

The mother will definitely start to flower on same timeline as other plants in the same 12/12 environment. the clones will focus on roots before it tries to flower. I'd wager it will show signs but might be delayed by comparison. Growth above ground slows significantly with a clone, so it's probably biologically in flower but won't show much until it has some roots. This may also reduce probability of success for clones too. A long enough, uninterrupted period of darkness causes a hormonal balance in the plant to shift. This is part of a feedback loop that then causes growth to shift from stem elongation and leaf growth (akak vegetative growth) to flower growth. If you give it long enough darkness it will flower - usually only needs 10+ hours, but 12 ensures that all varieties flip to flower as this can vary be where the genes came from.. i've even read that some rarer varieties will flower on 15/9. 12/12 is safe and as long as you provide the same DLI, the longer options are of no benefit.

What I would do is not flower the clone yet. For one it will be very small even if roots. You may find that the mother is shit hot, the best ever and you will just have a few extra grams. Save it and learn what the mother does as the clone should behave identically (all parameters identical too). If it’s shit you don’t need to flower it. Proper big growers usually find a great pheno and clone it and use just that

If you have them at 12/12, yes, they will try to flower. They have no idea they have no roots, but the 12 hours of dark will tell them that it is time to flower. You will need to give them 18/6 if you want them to grow into the veg phase.
