I typically only do this for plants that are too close to the lights compared to others, and therefore the ripeness occurs a bit faster at the top than normal. i've tried it in other contexts and i didn't see any meaningful benefit for 3-5 more days for the lowers... the good buds were still where they were expected and the larf was normal relative to how well i trimmed off lower sites early in flower. if i left too much at bottm, that shit is never going to look good, lol, so don't try. focus on the good stuff.
you don't really gain any weight for doing it - a limit to how much can happen in a few days. The only reason would be for concerns related to trichome coloration and your feelings on what is best.
when i have a tall plant that gets close to lights and the top 3-4 big colas at top start turning purple from the lights.. that's when i do it. So that stuff at top isn't 100% amber if i wait for the bulk of trichomes on good nugs lower on the plant to turn the color i want. Typpically levels it out with any other plants..
