Leaves pointing up

Hello, One plant has most of its leaves pointing up. Plant look healthy otherwise. PPFD is around 650/700 and light pattern is 20/4 What could be the root cause? I read mixed answers. Some say healthy plants and or strain specific other that light stress. Regards, Jeanno

in this case when it is as extreme as that and isolated at the top, it's most likely light/heat stress. "praying" can be caused by other things, so you have to cross-reference whatever you can... this is beyond normal turgor pressure in the plant. If you continue, you will eventually see some leaf damage. It doesn't always happen over night. Sometimes it can take weeks if only slightly giving too much. Raising RH can help, but may need to reduce power or raise lights, too. Read up on Daily Light Integral (wiki). Dropping 2 hours might also fix it, if giving too much "DLI." More is not better with light. How much you can give per day will vary based on light, temp, RH, and atmospheric CO2. A light producing 35-40 DLI at normal hanging distances for modern LED grow lights is a good starting point. You'll still need to observe and react to plant to fine-tune how much light you give per day. DLI tables exist for reference. You don't even have to know the math, but you need to understand the gist of it. hours, dimmer, distance for light are all options to adjust how much light you provide. Assuming normal hanging distances, better to adjust hours before power, as that will maintain better penetration of light, if more intense over fewer hours. Hanging distance should be about the best coverage of light (geometry), but if you hang it a bit higher while maintaining overall DLI you'll get better penetration while wasting a bit more electricity - more power means more heat too.

Light/heat stress. Leaves point up like that to reduce the effective area exposed to light/heat..........it is a stress response by the plant to minimise exposure to too much light/heat.

Hey Jeanno, your plant is healthy and the leaves pointing upwards is called the "praying position" as they direct themselfs to the "Sungod". It is a signe of a very healthy plant that was even more light then it gets right now. You have to worry about nothing at all. I would not even increase the ppfd right now its fine until the last push. Good work!

When a cannabis plant's leaves are reaching for the sky, it's usually a good sign. It means they're healthy and getting enough light. Plants naturally grow towards the sun, so if you see your plant doing this, it means it's happy and getting what it needs. When a cannabis plant's leaves are reaching for the sky, it's called positive phototropism. Basically, plants have a natural instinct to grow towards light sources. So, if your plant is stretching upwards, it means it's getting enough light to photosynthesize and make its own food. You might also notice that the leaves on the top of the plant get the most light. These leaves are usually bigger and bushier than the ones on the bottom. That's because they're doing most of the photosynthesis.

Hello there nice job on the plants don't worry like don't worry at all What your seeing is called "praying " buy alot of people When a plant is doing this it means the plant is reaching for the sky. This is a good thing to see. Now I will say if your in week 6 of flower it is time for you to start dialing up the ppfd You should keep increasing the amount the plant is getting everyday by a small amount durring weeks 6 and 7 of flower Your plant is saying it's happy but also it is letting you k ow It can Handel some more light You should be giving the plants at min 1000 ppfd for the better part if week 7 Don't turn the light up all fast in one day you will burn your plants Just watch your leaves you will know when you can't give it anymore light the leaves will stop praying and then you know to turn the light back down slightly when the leaves start to not

High VPD (vapour pressure deficit) mean 2 things: 1) Your temperature is high and your humidity low 2) You willl need to provide less nutrients (if you feed them everytime) and water more often. If the plant dont show strees marks you can leave it as it is or... low the VPD, via air conditioner/ lights a little bit up/ better air exchange inside the tent... you choose, in flowering you dont want to increase the humidity to much so keep and eye on that. Plants under high VPD could show Ca deficiency because Ca flows passively trough xylem via transpiration, when a plant is under heavy VPD tends to close stomata to preserve moisture in tissue and prevet cell damage meaning that in new shoots wich are the parts more exposed to heat will show Ca deficiency. Is good to have high VPD during flowering, but too much will harm the plant. Happy growing mate

Hi, There is a risk of heat stress due to light to close conditions. Merry Christmas buddy.

There's many mixed answers for praying leaves. Some say it's healthy, others say the leaves are shielding themselves from the light. I had plants with leaves that were praying in my 8x4. I was curious so I started implementing VPD changes using humidity. When I lowered VPD (transpiring rate) the leaves no longer prayed, when I raised VPD they would start to pray again. I tested changing VPD with only humidity first and then with temperature, results were the same. It was the only time I've every tested something like this. I can't say if it was this strain or something else but next strain I grow, I'll do the same tests and see if results are the same.
