Apart from trichomes another way to tell is hold a shade leaf by the stem bend it downwards when it snaps away cleanly no string attached no resistance your plants are ready though have noticed with AK420 the leaves do snap easily but leave strings not a way to tell really but feel the bud with a lill squeeze when it feels so tight its gonna burst your near the end

You need to look and judge by the trichomes. They will be ripe when the trichomes are erect, trichome heads are expanded like a balloon, and they are all mostly milky/cloudy white with about 10% of them amber colored. You need a microscope or jeweler's loupe.
