Why Do a Run-Off Test?

CommanderCannabis
CommanderCannabisstarted grow question 4 years ago
Growing in 5 gal container of coco and am now feeding 2 quarts of solution a day with no run off. How often do you test the run off and how much solution do you pour in to get run off . I basically look at the plant to see if she is handling the solution. My pH going in is @ 6.

Personally, I water to achieve a 10-20% run off (I use soil, however, but same principle). Taking your reads from your run off is pretty important... What we put in is not necessarily what comes out. That 6.0 may be 5.0 in the run-off if there's a pH maladjustment or many other factors, like poor microbacterial health, pathogens developing and so on. It's extremely important (in mine and many others opinions) to test your run-off constantly to ensure everything is Kosher. If putting in 6.0 yeilds a 5.0 result, lets say, it's your indicator that something's wrong and needs an adjustment. Left unchecked, problems will start to occur. Just my two cents. Good luck this week👍

Also growing in coco DTW. I use Dr. MJ's book on amazon Coco for Cannabis and so go for 5-10% run off tested weekly or if problems then more often. Main thing it will tell you is the amount of salts coming out of the pot, you want a lower number of course. So we just follow his book and it does work rather well if your genetics co-operate. We dont worry too much over out PH, since there really not much to go on in that pot if I did the coco prep work. Not that it isnt helpful at times just not the issue it is in soil.

Like @Jinks101, said it's allowing you to know the value in the coco medium that is nt the values that you are putting in due to the plant using some nutrients and due to the coco not buffering like soil.
