Germination

Just one plant on this run. I’m going organic and trying to keep things simple. Using Coast of Maine Stonington soil. I filled the center of the pot with about a liter of their Sprout Island seed starter mix. Planted the seed directly into the 5 gallon pot. 🤞 8/25 - 2 days since planting…… 8/26 - 3 days since sowing the seed, still underground Temps have been 77-79, RH 60-65. The light is on 24/7 at about 40%, 28” high. I’ve been trying to keep the soil evenly moist with frequent light watering. Using plain tap water, set out 24 hours to evaporate the chloramine. Our water report says the avg pH is 7.8, solids 276 ppm. The litmus paper test I did looks like 7 pH. So it’s high, but I’m not gonna worry about it. Supposedly, an organic grow with good soil can deal with water up to 8 pH. We’ll see. 8/27 - Sprouted! 🌱🎉 She came up during the night, so a little under 4 days from planting. Here’s my setup: AC Infinity 632 tent 20”x36”x62” AC Infinity S4 in-line fan and carbon filter Viparspectra XS1500 light Pure MistAire humidifier (2) Accurite thermometer/hygrometer 6” Lasko clip fan 5 gallon fabric pot I found some good VPD charts and hopefully I can keep the temps and RH zoned in. I bought a second humidifier which has helped a lot. I can regulate the RH pretty well now. For nutrients I have a couple of Coast of Maine’s dry amendments for top dressing. They say that their Stonington mix, without adding any nutes, can feed a plant for about 30 days in a 5 gallon pot. But I will use Recharge to keep a good microbe herd grazing in the soil.

Week One ☀️Day 1 - It’s microscopic but looks very healthy! ☀️Day 2 - Growing quickly, seems happy! ☀️Day 3 - All good. I’m already planning my next grow, lol. ☀️Day 4 - Increased the lighting from 40% to 60% last night after watering. No issues. ☀️Day 5 - Watered with Recharge, about 3/4 gallon. I didn’t water yesterday so the soil could get a good soaking of “beneficial bacteria water” today. I’m always nervous about over watering, but it’s a big pot so it should be ok. ☀️Day 6 - All is well. Growing at a steady pace. No adverse effects from the heavy watering yesterday. But I’m going to try watering every other day for a while and see how that goes. ☀️Day 7 - Week one is in the books. Growing well. The last couple of days I did struggle a bit with keeping the temps down & the humidity up in the tent. I’ll be glad when cooler weather eventually gets here. Light schedule is 19/5 with lights-out during the late afternoon hours when it’s the hottest. I’m following the XS1500 mfg guidelines for light distance and power for now. For the next 3 weeks or so I’ll just keep the soil moist and manage the tent conditions. I’m also going to “feed the soil” with Chicken Soup and Recharge. Once every 10 days for each, but staggered 5 days apart. So every 5 days the soil will get a little boost. Around the 4 week mark I’m going to try some LST and hope that I don’t mangle the poor thing. I’ll also top dress with some dry amendments at that time.

Week Two 🔆 Day 8 - Looking good. Continuing to manage the temps & RH to stay in a good VPD zone. It’s not needing too much adjustment. The humidifiers are getting a workout though. 🔆 Day 9 - Over the past few days the plant seems to be gradually turning a lighter green. It looks like it could be nitrogen deficiency? I would think that there’s enough nutrients in the soil. After some research, I’m guessing that my tap water, which is pretty hard, might be causing nutrient lock-out. I’m going to switch over to filtered water and see what happens. 🔆 Day 10 - I gave the soil a good drenching of distilled water with 1/2 tsp per gallon of distilled white vinegar added. Hoping that this will help remove any calcium build-up and normalize the pH. Of course I could be completely wrong about the whole situation. 🔆 Day 11 - She’s still looking pale, but no worse than yesterday. The good news is she’s still growing at a good pace. I’ve brewed some nutrient tea with Stonington plant food & Chicken Soup which I’ll dilute and apply as a foliar at lights-out. 🔆 Day 12 - Her color is still fading (the photos make her look greener than she actually is). I did a full flush last night with pHed, low TDS water with Recharge added. I’m trying everything, lol. The crazy thing is, she’s still growing well despite it all, for now at least. 🔆 Day 13 - I had posted in the sick plant forum on Autoflower.net and a moderator replied. He said that I had used too much seed starter soil in the center of the pot and it didn’t have enough nutrients for the plant at this stage. Makes sense. Lesson learned. I’ve top dressed with Stonington plant food and will continue foliar feeding. Hopefully her roots will reach the “good” soil soon. 🔆 Day 14 - Well, I was all over the place this week. Over-thinking, over-complicating. But the Pale Lady is still growing like a champ. Good genetics overcoming bad conditions. But I need to get her greening up soon or her growth is sure to be impacted.

Liquid Squid Fertilizer for Indoor Plants - Coast of Maine

Week 3 😎 Day 15 - Growth still seems good. I plan on giving her a dose of Liquid Squid (Coast of Maine) this evening after lights-out. The dry amendments, even as a tea, seem too slow acting. Hopefully the Squid will green her up quicker. 😎 Day 16 - Growth, good. Color, not so good. The one thing I’ve done right is the tent environment, and that has probably helped her to keep going so well. Air flow, lighting, temperature, and humidity have been pretty much spot on throughout. 😞 Day 18 - I decided to pull her. The leaves were continuing to deteriorate and the new growth wasn’t looking good. When I dug her up it was obvious that the roots hadn’t developed properly. It’s amazing that she was growing as well as she was. Stupid mistake #1 - Using a liter of seed starter soil in the center of the pot. What was I thinking!? Lol. If it had been a regular light mix soil, as intended, the roots would have grown properly. Stupid mistake #2 - Using straight, hard tap water early in the grow. Just made matters worse I sure.
