deFharo Welcome, clandestine marijuana growers, and also to those lucky enough not to be! 👨‍🌾💦💡🌞🌲 I'm starting the fall-winter season of organic marijuana cultivation, looking for sativa strains, preferably landrace, that bring back the effects I knew in my younger days! Jamaican Lamsbread from PEV seeds, the seed bank claims it's a landrace sativa, originally from Jamaica, although they don't provide more details, except that it was Bob Marley's favorite... okay, but it's a shame Bob isn't around to confirm it! 🤔 I have recent, firsthand information that today in Jamaica it's practically impossible to find an original sativa from the island... thanks to the breeders who have worked to preserve those ancient species. 🌱 It's often said that landrace strains aren't entirely suitable for indoor cultivation, and since I don't have outdoor space, I wish I did!, I'll do my best to make sure these landrace strains feel very comfortable in their grow tents. The producer warns: - Long flowering time: 11 weeks - The plant likes intense light and nutrients - Recommended 12/12h from the start and 10/14 from mid-flowering... I'm getting scared! 😨 - Great vigor and vertical and horizontal growth... this girl is going to force me to bend her with LST and topping! - Effects: it takes you flying directly. ✈️... Wow!!! It's one of those sativa varieties with a "no ceiling" effect: 🚀, meaning the more you smoke, the higher you get: 📈, without physical heaviness or relaxing comedown... It's a high-quality high, more than intense, it's motivating, inspirational, and positively affects mood significantly, so it's recommended for people with depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, and other types of psychological disorders... what lifts my spirits is having a coffee and smoking a joint in the morning, and what depresses me are some commercial descriptions. The seed germinated in 24 hours, I prepared a light substrate mix with good drainage and buried the seed directly, added some homemade auxins to the surface of the substrate, the first watering was with Activated Mountain Microorganisms (MMA), Honey, and Ormus, and finally, I sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth to control excess moisture and crawling bugs, kept the pot in the dark and warm under a grow tent until the seed sprouted. I’m keeping this seedling, and the others from this series of crops in my small tent of 40x40x140cm with a 30x30cm LED panel and 36w consumption, with a color spectrum of 7700K, for now, I keep a dome on all the seedlings to maintain high relative humidity. Currently, the seedling shows a weak stem, but I trust it will correct itself in the coming days! Until next week... Today, for me, smoking marijuana is just an acceptable solitary vice, growing it at home allows me self-sufficiency in consumption; I just intend to have my box full of the best marijuana I can cultivate. 🤷‍♂️ Relentlessly, I've decided to search for those old sativas all over the world, in this diary from Jamaica 😍... of course, as long as the truck holds up! 🚚🚶‍♂️🤷‍♂️ 21 days have passed since I put the seed in the substrate. I'm growing this seedling on a mixed schedule, indoors for 10 hours, sharing a grow tent with all the others, then I take them to the window until dusk (+10h). The seedling is progressing vigorously! 🤸‍♂️ The formation of the second node is advancing; due to space issues, I'm going to wait at least a week to transplant to the final pot. This week, first watering to recover the moisture lost over these 3 weeks. I've made a mix with my black bean auxins, honey, and bio-fermented pumpkin and minerals with Activated Mountain Microorganisms (MMA). The day after this watering, when part of the upper substrate has dried, I sprinkle diatomaceous earth (diatomite). This product has several advantages for this stage of growth: it protects me against crawling insects, for this the powder must be dry, it reflects sunlight to prevent the substrate of the small cup from heating up when I take it out in the sun, it prevents stem rot from excess moisture since it is absorbent, and finally, it provides silicon that helps harden and give elasticity to stems and leaves. - Until next week... I just want to have my box full of the best marijuana I can grow. 🤷‍♂️ Relentlessly, I've decided to search for those old sativas all over the world, in this diary from Jamaica 😍... of course, as long as the truck holds up! 🚚🚶‍♂️🤷‍♂️ The fourth week has concluded, and halfway through, I transplanted to the final pot, a square, red, old-school 7L pot with homemade aeration. Three days after the transplant, the plant looks comfortable in its new pot. The growth of this strain is very compact with little distance between nodes and a strong stem; the symmetry is, for now, perfect. For this new growing season, I'm going to experiment with foliar fertilization during the vegetative growth stage. I've already tested the compatibility and efficiency of some of my soluble organic preparations, and the result is immediate and very good. Now, I'm going to define what combinations I make and the application timing between them. The main idea is to maintain a substrate without nutrient clumps that favors the total expansion of the roots and to reach flowering with a very powerful root system that absorbs nutrients from that phase without any problem. Keeping the plant growth in the first weeks with gentle watering so that the plant feeds on the nutrients from the substrate is correct, but I'm thinking about the concept of high-yield plants, grown in a moderate substrate size (6-7 liters), where the nutrients in the substrate are released slowly and still get depleted in a few weeks. So, I'm going to experiment with these new crops and throughout their vegetative phase with foliar fertilization because I want and need monstrous buds to fill my box!! ** I carry out the transplant to the final pot in three differentiated stages, over a process of 3-4 days... how? 🙄🤷‍♀️ - First day: - I prepare the substrate carefully, mixing 2 or 3 types of commercial substrate based on their composition and density. I add, to improve drainage and moisture and/or nutrient retention: Perlite, Vermiculite, Zeolite, and Coco fiber; I enrich the mix with worm humus, homemade bokashi, and goat and sheep manure, and finally, I add the minerals at a rate of 1 gram per liter of substrate. This time, 3 types of clay: Montmorillonite, Kaolin, and Red Illite, also basalt rock powder, pumice stone, wood ash, Phosphorite (1.5g/l), and ground Leonardite (4g/l). This time I forgot to add Azomite, one of the most important minerals due to its extensive range of microelements. I'm going to dissolve the micronized Azomite in water and do a deep watering, ensuring total distribution throughout the substrate. To finish, I've added my charcoal preparation with Leonardite activated with Activated Mountain Microorganisms (MMA); the charcoal retains nutrients and gives structure to the soil. By introducing it with MMA, I ensure inoculation of microorganisms throughout the substrate. You can see in the photo above the mycelium of microorganisms I found when opening the container 30 days after making the preparation! - Before the transplant, I deeply water the small seedling container, so it doesn't crumble. In the transplant hole, I sprinkle my black bean auxins to promote rooting. I don't do the first watering until 24 hours later, so the excess moisture from the small container distributes, by capillarity, through the new immediate substrate. At this stage, the roots grow by the minute, and this initial moisture helps guide the roots. • Second day: The small roots are already touching the dry substrate of the new pot; they're thirsty. It's the moment when I do the first deep watering. This watering is very important to me; it serves to moderately moisten the entire substrate, watering with an amount of water that is approximately 15% of the pot's capacity. E.g.: 7-liter pot = 1 liter of initial watering. But the main function of this watering is to activate the microbiology of the substrate, thus promoting root expansion and plant growth. For this, I include in the watering some of my liquid Activated Mountain Microorganisms (MMA) preparations and sweeten it with natural honey, which is an excellent source of sugars and contains many enzymes that help with rooting and the beginning of microbiology propagation, which in turn will start to dissolve and mineralize the organic matter of the substrate and the minerals... I water through the saucer and over the substrate, in a proportion of 1/3. • Third day: I fill the pots with substrate level with the edge. Also, in the case of textile pots, I fill the saucer with river stones that mimic mother rock and retain moisture while aerating the base, without the risk of substrate stagnation. I don't want to lose a single centimeter of soil in the container. A few hours after the first watering, the substrate has dropped about 2-3 cm, so I fill this space with dry material from my own production 😋, I save the leaves from defoliations and dry stems, I take advantage of the mulch, pre-digested from previous crops, and lately, I've been practicing to ensure that this material has no larvae, insect eggs, or pathogens; I microwave it for a few minutes!! 🤪 I have to say that the results are excellent. Before, in trying to keep the microbiology intact from the reused mulch, I couldn't get rid of the fungus gnat; now they have completely disappeared, my last advanced crop is pest-free!! 🤠 I keep these new crops on a mixed schedule of 20 hours of light, 10 hours of indoor light under the excellent light of the Vipar P1000 lamp at 50% power (48w) and 30cm from the tops of the seedlings, then 10 more hours in the windows catching the free and inimitable sunlight! 🌞... pot here, pot there, that's my life as an organic grower, I don't know anything, but I want to understand everything!! - Until next week... deFharo Welcome clandestine marijuana growers and also to those lucky enough not to be one! 🖐️👨‍🌾 Sixth week of life and the last of the vegetative growth, since yesterday the plant is on flowering schedule. The vertical growth is remarkable, strengthening continues in branches and stem, at the beginning of the week I did the apical cut, in the middle of the week the first LST ties, water consumption is low due to the low temperatures and the retention of the old-school pot. Yesterday I put this and 6 other plants on flowering schedule, I have started to experiment with a technique to try to speed up the transition to flowering and thus slow down the stretching as soon as possible. I use a 730nm (10w) LED bulb, I turn it on 15 minutes before putting the plants in darkness and keep it on for another 30 minutes. It seems that this light frequency helps with the rapid phytochrome change, this tricks the plant and in practice, they say the plant behaves as if the schedule were 12.5/13.5h, gaining 2 hours and accelerating the entry into flowering... let's see if I notice any difference. I have used this lamp before in advanced flowering stages as a spectrum supplement, now I want to test this theory, if in a week pre-flowering begins, I would consider this experiment a success. • This week one watering and one foliar application. Regarding nutrition, I continue with my organic madness, absorbed and withdrawn in the safety of my environment, without looking elsewhere, an autistic and independent exercise, which besides the genuine empirical experiment, allows me to have my box full of good marijuana, and the consequence of so much good smoke makes me have a lot of fun filling out these grow diaries, reflecting, and without letting the smoke escape, talking, from the most intimate, through the scenes, characters, or stories that accompany the photos of the crops, indispensable in my rebellion, where I feel most free, and that only want to bring a smile once in a while... because if I don't do this, I lock myself in my home lab, with my marijuana joints, my old movies, and the music... letting the smoke escape and nothing more! The damn plant keeps growing and growing; you can also notice the crowding of plants I have in the grow tent, which is not allowing some strains to properly develop the lower part. I hope to free up space this week and start improving light entry for all the crops. Water consumption has increased a lot this week. To combat the significant rise in relative humidity and the appearance of mold, during the dark period I'm gathering the eleven current crops in a room with a dehumidifier, maintaining a relative humidity during that period, around 55-60%. Tomorrow I'm going to do a foliar application with soluble sulfur for the young plants, and for the other two that are starting flowering, I'm going to apply horsetail foliar to prevent powdery mildew with both products. This week the plant has slowed down a bit in its vertical growth; I made an apical cut on the two upper tips to help slow down growth and build a balanced and powerful canopy. Although in this type of plant, the strength of its morphology lies in the long branches filled with buds, in these cases, lateral light is essential for me to fill all those branches with fat floral buds. Despite the height the plant is reaching, these sativas, due to their morphology, are narrower than indicas, which allows me to arrange them better in my grow tent and also favors the entry of lateral light. Two foliar applications this week with horsetail extract to prevent the appearance of fungi. A deep watering with micronutrients and microbiology... everything is good!! For now, gentle and varied waterings to help the root system expand; the plant has a moderate water consumption, according to the old-school pot, which has less evaporation than textile pots or air-pots... for now, one watering a week. The whole coming week is expected to be cloudy skies; when I don't expect sunny skies, I keep the plants at 12h indoors. It has a normal water consumption for the type of pot and current temperatures, watering every 4 days. This is another sativa that, due to its narrow and tall shape, will allow me to carry out these grows without overcrowding the grow tent. Additionally, having horizontal space available will let me place several side panels to fatten up the sativa buds, which will grow along the branches... SMB LED panel at 2700K + 660nm at 50% (25w) Quantum LED panel at 7700K at 50% (18w) 🌞💡 Schedule: 12h indoors. 🏠 Grow tent shared with other sativa plants: 70x70x160cm. 🥗 Soluble nutrition 3M, homemade with organic matter, minerals, and microbiology. =============================== Plants in these growth stages don't have much more to say; today I want to talk about two formulations of soluble Bio nutrients that I'm trying out this week, after being in anaerobic fermentation for 6 months for one and 10 months for the other... really exciting!! These homemade bio fertilizers perfectly align with my concept of self-sufficient, independent, and underground grows, but above all rebellious, for everything it means to me. The day I manage to replace electric light with sunlight in my grows, the circle will be completely closed. Both are based on the activation of Mountain Microorganisms, from the two Solid Mountain Microorganism (MMS) cultures I maintain with different strains collected from various virgin forests in my area; during the fermentation process, the microorganisms propagate, solubilize nutrients, and mineralize organic matter. Additionally, they chelate the minerals present in the formula; the longer the anaerobic fermentation, the greater the amount of nutrients and minerals that are hydrolyzed. I've found that with regular and continuous application of activated mountain microorganisms (MMA), I maintain a high rate of decomposition of the organic matter and minerals present in the substrate; there is no limit to the application of MMA!! There is no danger of saturation or over-fertilization; what I achieve is to greatly accelerate the natural processes of decomposition of organic matter and therefore the assimilation of nutrients. The MMA provide the nutrients and minerals that the plant requests. How long does a microorganism live? How long does it take for a bacterium to become a grandmother, great-grandmother, or great-great-grandmother? Do they live minutes, hours...? What I have experienced is that with a constant inoculation of MMA, the organic matter of the mulch completely decomposes and turns into humus within the period of a grow. I add several times about 100-125g of dry matter to the mulch, which eventually disappears. I also make regular surface applications of solid amendments with guanos, algae, meals, etc. Finally, for me, it is more efficient to create substrate mixes that prioritize aeration, drainage, and cation exchange, with hardly any added nutrients, just minerals, except for some worm humus and bokashi that I add to the substrate; I prefer this, as it is more efficient and controllable, than creating super substrates, which I extensively experimented with in my first grows. These bio-fermented solutions will replace some similar formulas that were running out, but I don't discard them; as they run out, I am making a second activation of microorganisms, which will lead to a second generation of microbiology and continue the hydrolysis of the nutrients or minerals present. I will keep the barrels closed for as long as the new formulas last... and back to square one!! From the fourth generation of microorganisms, these will be suitable for human consumption... but that's another story! 🤷‍♀️ • MMA Ultra (Activated Mountain Microorganisms in liquid form with nutrients and minerals) - 02/05/21 This is a very complex formula that alone would be enough to carry any grow from start to finish; it includes various vegetables (pumpkin, carrot, and garlic) for their properties and vitamins, as well as three types of guanos (bat, bird, and mealworm) which provide a great wealth of trace elements, in addition to NP; three minerals (phosphorite, azomite, and leonardite), and finally, a bit of kelp, and papain enzymes that will help convert protein (N) into amino acids. To start the fermentation, I used whey from neighboring sheep, alkaline spring water to balance the acidity of the preparation, organic molasses, fresh yeast, and my Solid Mountain Microorganisms (MMS). Since February is a cold time, I kept the barrel warm during the first month to accelerate fermentation; after that, it has been closed and in the dark until today. •• Second formula: MMA Mineral (Activated Mountain Microorganisms in liquid form with minerals) 05/08/21 This bio-preparation guarantees the presence of all the minerals from the periodic table, as well as essential macro elements (P, K, Mg, Ca, S), thanks to the addition of 12 powdered minerals (azomite, montmorillonite, basalt, phosphorite, kaolin, illite, ash, pumice, dolomite, leonardite, Epsom salt, and potassium sulfate). It is designed to be used from the end of the vegetative growth stage. The procedure and fermentation elements are the same as the previous bio-fertilizer; in this case, to accelerate the chelation or solubilization of the minerals, I used double the amount of my Solid Mountain Microorganisms (MMS). The main component of these bio-ferments is the Mountain Microorganisms, which solubilize the rest of the components, but they can also be replaced by whey, and then we would make a lacto-ferment, where the lactic acid and lactic acid bacteria from the whey are also very effective for chelating minerals, mainly phosphoric rock. Lacto-ferments work very well for foliar nutrition and as a prebiotic. Finally, it can also be replaced by fresh manure, freshly out of the backside of a free-range cow; here there is a series of bacteria, but mainly Bacillus subtilis, in addition to all the nutrients from the manure itself that make this preparation the star of all of them. The long branches are adorned with new floral buds, the canopy of colas is going to be impressive!! Despite the low temperatures, the plant has a good water consumption, watering every three days, this frequency allows me to provide very varied nutrition and the plant is appreciating it. This week, to help with the cold, I gave the plant "hot soup," just like my grandma used to do, I heated all the mixes to 20°C and always sweetened with molasses. My battle against mold and high relative humidity is succeeding, I make periodic foliar applications with horsetail extract or chamomile infusion, I maintain humidity levels around 60% with a dehumidifier and good ventilation, the first signs of mold that appeared two weeks ago on the lower leaves of all the crops have completely stopped! Additionally, the water I collect from the dehumidifiers (EC: 0.07) works very well for watering, mixing it with mountain water gives a final EC of 0.15, which allows me to slightly increase the nutrient concentration, although my nutrition strategy is based on feeding a little with each watering, I usually don't exceed EC levels of 1.8, the common range is around EC: 1.0/1.2. As a base, I used the mulch from my last harvest two weeks ago, a completely decomposed material, turned into humus by microbiology, pure organic matter, I added an equal part of Bokashi made from seaweed and then added a third part with all the organic components I have (bird guano, bat guano, and mealworm, powdered PK humate, Leonardite, Azomite, Dolomite, Kelp, Spirulina, and Chlorella, Diatomaceous earth, wood and palm ash, fish meal, bones, blood, cotton and alfalfa seeds, coffee grounds, Epsom salt, dehydrated pear, apple, and potato peels, powdered eggshells)... I might be forgetting some. The point is that this preparation is essential to feed the microbiology of the substrate, varied organic matter that will be dissolved and mineralized. For the application in the pot, I first remove the existing mulch, apply approximately 6g per liter of substrate, rake it in, and then cover everything with the mulch. The size is perfect for my growing spaces and very manageable for me, as I move my pots several times a day. Very healthy appearance and very compact buds expanding!! The aromas have exploded, very strong lemon and forest scents! Regarding nutrition, this week I did 2 waterings with very light mixes aimed at dissolving extra nutrients present in the substrate. Water consumption is high, watering every three days. I continue with foliar applications every three days with horsetail and chamomile for fungus control, I keep a dehumidifier on and I've added an air extractor in the grow tents. It has shown some signs of mold on a few leaves, but I have it totally under control with horsetail, ventilation, and a dehumidifier! I expect constant growth of the buds, I think it’s going to be a great harvest. All for the cause 👈🧙‍♂️👍 Ninth week of flowering, according to the producer, it should be ready for harvest in three more weeks. If that's the case, the buds are going to get huge, but I even hope the grow lasts longer! The canopy is enormous, with very compact-looking flowers and a very dense feel. The plant shows strength and happiness from the home and food, good water consumption level, watering deeply every 3 days. It has shown some signs of mold on a few leaves, but I have it totally under control with horsetail, ventilation, and a dehumidifier! This week I did the second and last feeding of the season for this plant and added mulch to the pot. So far, the plant appreciates all the nutrients and care; the soil is well-fed! deFharo Welcome clandestine marijuana growers and also to those lucky enough not to be one! 🙋‍♂️👨‍🌾👍 It's been eleven weeks since the switch to flowering, one week ahead of the producer's predictions, and this time it might actually happen, or almost, because I see this plant ready in a maximum of two weeks. A few days ago, I had to remove the top of one of the main colas; it had started a degradation process due to humidity, but it seems the plant has recovered well and the rest of the cola is continuing its normal process. This week, the usual: homemade organic nutrition, replenishing mulch, and lots of love for the grow. deFharo Welcome, clandestine marijuana growers and also to those lucky enough not to be one! 🙋‍♂️👨‍🌾👍 Hard buds like rocks, big caliber, stinky and sticky, are offered to me by this gluttonous strain, easy to grow, that resisted powdery mildew and daily walks from the grow tent to my windows... everything points to it being a good yield and great smoke! Twelve weeks since the switch to flowering and the last stage of life for this rewarding grow, I'm going to harvest it in a week, water consumption is dropping, the plant is cannibalizing its own leaves, and the first amber trichomes are starting to appear. I'm going to do two last waterings with my best water, just water, I'm doing this for the first time in the entire grow, my concept of nutrition for the plants is based on feeding them with every watering, just like with any living being, my fermented and hydrolyzed nutrients that I use in the waterings, when not fully digested by the roots, remain in the substrate as organic matter, more food for the microbiology!! With strict control of pH and EC and massive inoculation of microorganisms, I ensure that I don't saturate the substrate and maintain a rhizosphere full of life, because excess organic matter can also block a grow, but unlike what happens with chemical fertilizer residues, which leave salts in the substrate, the living organic substrate has much more buffering power, meaning the plant can recover and survive much easier and faster from any blockage or deficiency than a substrate saturated with mineral salts and devoid of life!! These last two waterings with just water are to continue with my concept of reuse, there's enough life and nutrients in the substrate for more than a week, for sure, this way I also want to facilitate the flow of fluids due to the low EC that the water mix will have. Since this winter I'm tirelessly using dehumidifiers for the grows, I get that water free of minerals, but also chlorine, I'm mixing it 50% with alkaline spring water, at this time of year with a pH around 8 and an EC of 0.6, in the end, I get a mix with an EC of 0.35 and a pH around 7/7.5, the high pH and low EC facilitate the dissolution of nutrients in the substrate. This way, above all, I'm saving trips to fetch water from the mountain spring I use during the summer when I don't have dehumidifiers running, now I use the alkaline spring water, much closer to my home and that I visit regularly since it's the water I consume. Thirteen weeks of flowering, one more than what the producer states, perfect, I was expecting more flowering time! Now that I'm finishing the current grows and my sativa stash is replenished, I'm going to grow only 4 plants in one grow tent, this way I'll save on the electric bill, but above all, I'll be able to grow in that tent with more light intensity. Even though this growing season has gone well, I've noticed less mass in the flowers than I'm used to. In these last grows, I've been using an average of 45w per plant; in previous seasons, I reached 125w per plant... and you can tell! After a week of drying and another of curing, I'll try the smoke from this strain and expand this harvest log...
