@PhunkyPhallus, I would def check out the grow series on the BuildASoil youtube channel, it's where I learned to grow organics in Earthboxes.
This one was a first run in the soil, even mix of Ocean Forest and Happy Frog from Fox Farm. All feedings were top dressed by just spreading them on the soil and watering them in with additional nutes (First week in the journal shows what I fed them). I have since adjusted my feedings to what is essentially a Coots mix (look up Clackamas Coot), but its still just evenly spread across the topsoil.
Roots will get down to the reservoir and you'll know it when the larger plants start drinking a gallon a day. Roots were starting to come up to the top soil to feed (which is what you want for a top dress) there's a pic in week 10.
Since I'm doing no-till, I can't dig around and check roots and there's no way to actually see them unless you saw a hole near the water runoff slot. A project for the future.
2nd run in the same soil just finished, you can look up my diaries for Grandmommy Purple and Aurora indica. I fed them a lot less often as an experiment and the plants turned out well.
Jeremy from BAS mentioned that he found plants can become entirely dependent on the extra oxygen from air stones, and if those happen to fail at any point, the plant can actually die or go into shock. I chose not to use them.
