Germination went well and she will be kept in the small 1 litre air pot for a couple of weeks before she gets transplanted into an 11 litre fabric pot. This lady will be sharing the tent with a Tropicanna Banana from Barney's Farm.
Update on day 11
I've managed to almost kill this little seedling together with the Tropicanna Banana. I have 2 new lights and I mixed the specs up a bit and screwed up. I should have double checked the recommended settings before just doing it... I have fried my little babies!!!
I decided to germinate another bean and do it it right this time. Instead of setting the light's dimmer to 50%, I'll do the recommended 25% and it should hopefully work better.
Update on day 13
The new seedling has been born.
I'm still getting used to the new light, and I have slightly burnt the new seedling as well. I have now turned the dimmer down to about 20% since 25% was too much.
So, I have almost managed to kill seedling 2 as well. The first one is not quite dead yet, but it's very near now.... I'm still struggling to find the correct hang height and dimmer setting on the light. I also realised the main problem was that my seedling box, that I thought I was cleverly using, kind of cooked the seedlings. The box itself had melted from the heat, so it must have got pretty hot. Anyway, the seedling is now 18 days and it's tiny. I'm hoping I haven't done too much damage, and that it will recover. The other seedling in the tent is doing worse, but I have hope for both. Even the first Wedding Cake seedling I cooked is looking like it could recover.
After I burnt all my seedlings with the light setting too high, we have seen some recovering. The little one has recovered quite well. so it'll be a keaper for sure. The second plant has done very well and she was ready to be topped.
Initially I planned to have 2 plants in the tent, a Tropicanna Banana and a Wedding Cake. After my mishap with the new light I've ended up with 3 decent plants and 1 little Tropicanna Banana Runt. I have now changed my mind and will keep the 3 larger plant for sure - 1 Tropicanna Banana and 2 Wedding Cake. These 3 have been up potted to 11 litre fabric pots.
The larger of the two grows very rapidly now. I defoliated them both a bit and put them in darkness for 24 hours. Tomorrow it'll start the flowering process.
I haven't needed to train any of these girls other than a bit of tucking. They spread out beautifully on their own. The little one grows super compact, and the taller one is very thick and strong.
I have only done some defoliation this week. We're having problems in the tent! 3 out of 4 plants show defeciences. I realised the other day and tried to correct nute mix by making it stronger and adding some grow nutes. I don't know what the problem is. Looking at leaf deficiency charts it looks to me like there is a Zinc deficiency. I don't understand why.
The largest plant in the tent, a Wedding Cake, is looking great. She is starting to show the initial signs of over feeding after the last few days of feeding corrections, though, and I don't want to give them any stronger mix. They all share the same nutrient mix. I'll flush them tomorrow. Hopefully they'll be okay after that and recover...
She is growing very well and has stretched a lot. She is now 70 cm tall, 20 cm taller than the necxt one in height. The little Wedding Cake is doing alright, but she is growing very small. She has recovered and new growth look good.
So, the bigger girl is doing alright, the smaller one is quite weak. Actually, the bigger one is quite weak as well, but she is producing some nice buds. I've done lots of defoliation, especially on the bigger girl.
The larger plant is looking really good and happy, the smaller a bit less happy. Still, both are producing some nice buds. I have thinned them out a bit.
The plants are doing well. The larger plant is beautiful and she is filling out with buds. The smeller plant is doing ok, but she is weak and we are getting smaller buds. They are starting to get proprly frosty and the frost is spreading to the fan leaves..
The larger of the two is looking ok, the small one not so much. Unfortunately some spider mites have attacked the plants in this tent. I'm not sure if I can treat them or not. We're getting close to harvest. I cleared up some foliage for the final swelling.
It seems like Banana Tropicanna is a magnet for red spider mites. These two plants are hardly affected at all. I sprayed them with a mix of potassium soap and Tec-Fort.
The buds are starting to look great. I will stop feeding them now.
So, it wasn't an ideal grow. We had some serious problems and I got small plants as a result. But, I believe the buds will still be great. I had some problems with spider mites in the tent, but they hardly touched the Wedding cakes. Instead the mites opted for the Tropicanna Banana that had some serious problems with them.
I also tortured my plants by light burning the seedlings and we had some nutrient lock out after the switch. Considering all those problems I am happy with the results.
