First photoperiod grow in about a year! I've been growing Mephisto autos ever since I won the X-Mas video contest last year and loving it but I'm excited for a change. I was quite impressed with the Auto version of the WWxBB so I'm expecting good things from the photo version. I'll be growing 2 WWxBB and 2 Sex Bud in a 100x100x200 (cm) tent with 2 Roleadro 300W full spectrum LEDs. I'm hoping to veg these girls out for a while with at least 1 topping to make the most of my tent space.
This will be my first time growing in Roots Organics soil. I've tried FFOF and Baby Bu's Compost in the past.
Day 1 - Although I put the seeds in a wet towel 3 days ago I'm going to call today (first day above ground) day 1. WWBB1 is off to a strong start with SB1 close behind. Using spray bottle to keep the soil damp.
Day 2 - All seeds have broken soil. Germination was going slowly in the paper towel so I just popped them in soil instead and it seems to have gone well.
Day 3 - Everything seems to be going well except for WWBB2. The cotyledons were buried under the dirt so I pushed some aside and noticed that the plant seemed like it wasn't rooted in the dirt yet. Upon further investigation I found that the end of the tap root was stuck in the seed shell. Anyone ever have this happen? What was the outcome?
Day 4 - WWBB2 surgery was successful: I removed the seed shell from the bottom of the tap root and this morning the stem is standing up!
The taproot on my WWBB2 is stuck in the seed shell and the stem won't stand up. Has anyone ever had this happen before? What was the outcome? Will the roots "find a way" or is this seedling doomed?
I’ve never run into this, but I’ve also never tried checking the root development in soil. I’d expect the roots to push through the seed shell eventually. But if you are comfortable digging in the root zone you may be able to remove the shell carefully with a pair of tweezers. Good luck!👍
Day 8 - Looking good so far, not looking stunted like my last few grows. Not sure if it's due to better airflow, new soil, or both. They stretched a little early on but I will probably be transplanting after this week so it won't be a problem. Still need to figure out what I'm going to do for nutrients this time. I'm considering BioBizz or Roots Organics right now but still haven't done enough research to make a decision.
Day 10 - Might need to wait a little longer than this weekend to transplant but still looking good.
Day 15 - Transplanted WWxBB 1, and SB 1 & 2 to Roots Organics Original in 5 gallon pots. It went smooth and they all perked up pretty quickly. WWxBB2 could use some more time to develop its roots but no more than 2 days until she gets transplanted too.
Day 17 - Transplanted WWBB2 this morning so now all 4 ladies are in 5 gallon pots. Watering .5 L every about every 3 days but will need to gradually increase the watering amount with the root development. Keeping an eye out for topping time!
Day 19 - Starting to see some slight discolorations on a few leaves. Seems too early for the soil to be running out of nutrients and my pH has been consistent as far as I know. Thinking about trying a light does of some FF nutes if it persists. WWBB1 is almost ready for topping.
Day 22 - Topped WWBB1 and SB1 2 days ago and they seems to be responding well. I'm debating only topping those two and doing a comparison of topping vs. LST. If I decide to top I need to do it soon though as the 2 other plants are working on nodes 4-5.
Day 24 - Started LST on WWBB2 and SB2.
Day 29 - Looking great! I'm liking the Roots soil so far, very healthy looking plants. As the differences between LST and topping become more apparent I'm realizing I like topping more. The burst of growth to the side branches after topping does wonders for the structure of the plants. Pulled the two LST'd plants down a little lower and topped WWBB1 for the second (and probably last) time.
Day 32 - Still right on track. Gotta start considering when to flip to flower as the sativas continue to take up vertical space.
Day 36 - Need to flip to 12/12 very soon, Sex Bud is getting pretty tall. I took the autoflowering 4AM out of the tent to make room for the photoperiods. Also I think my FF nutes are expired so I might have to bite the bullet and get some new nutes today since I don't have the space to go full organic no-till free range cruelty free fair trade.
Day 37 - Got some new nutrients finally, decided to go with Roots Organics Buddha Grow & Bloom. Also picked up a free gallon of worm compost tea from the local hydro shop. Did some light defoliation.
Day 38 - Flipped to 12/12 after some more defoliation.
8F - Seems like a slow transition to flower, maybe I'm just used to autos. Very gradually seeing pistils peeking out. SB1 was showing a significant amount of yellowing on lower fan leaves so I gave both Sex Buds a feeding today. First time trying the new nutrients!
10F - Here comes the stretch! It looks like the Sex Buds took well to the nutrients.
14F - Looking pretty healthy at this point. Bud development is right on track and the stretch has been good to the ladies so far. Looking forward to 2nd round of defoliation, they filled out again real quick!
20F - Was out of town for 5 days and came back to some beautiful budding ladies! Growth seems right on track and no serious deficiencies as far as I can tell.
24F - Another feeding today, just Buddha Bloom this time as they're further into flower and need less nitrogen. Sex Bud is putting on some frost!
F26 - Looking good. One calyx is bursting with nanners but it looks like the only spot where that's happening. Pluck em? Doesn't matter as long as seeds aren't growing/bursting? Too lazy to submit a grow question, maybe if it gets worse.
F33 - Plants look happy. I'm still taking it easy with the nutes, feeding once a week. Losing lower leaves less rapidly so I think the nutes did the trick. WWBB2 looks to be a little behind WWBB1 but is developing a MONSTER main cola. Sex Bud looks like it's starting to bulk up but I'm expecting at least another month until harvest.
41F - Seriously putting on some weight now! Pistils are just now starting to turn orange/brown. The un-topped WWBB has a massive main cola, but the topped plants are looking pretty good as well.
F49 - Looking great! I started to take the ladies out of the tent for some better pics and half of SB1 almost completely snapped off because of the weight of the buds! I managed to catch the branches before any serious damage was done and I ended up spending a ton of time trying to setup one single bamboo stick - ended up giving up on that and cleaned up an old tomato cage. It turned out most of the ladies needed some support at this point.
F51 - Flushing! The two Sex buds look like they're getting pretty close to the end, mostly milky with few amber trichs.
F62 - Pretty sure Sex Bud #2 is ready to come down. I'm not a fan of letting the trichs go too amber, right now I'm seeing mostly cloudy with maybe 5-10% amber. Both WWBB's look like they have a few more weeks still. Sex Bud #1 is pretty close to harvest as well.
F63 - SB2 got the chop this morning. Keeping an eye on the trichs for the other 3 plants although they all look like they could use another week or so.
