This will be seed number 1 out of 5 from Medus F1 RQS. Due to the genetic stability of the F1 seeds, I will do an experiment.
I will compare LST alone with LST + topping. There is a lot of controversy regarding topping autoflowers but with the release of these F1 seeds and it's genetic stability (basically clones from seeds) we can actually test if topping is beneficial for an autoflower.
I have 5 seeds and I will subject 2 to LST on it's own, 2 will be subjected to LST + topping and the last seed i'm not sure yet, what to do with it.
This plant will receive LST alone
8/4
I used regular tap water and soaked the seed for 36 hours until it was able to sink to the bottom
10/4
The seed was saturated and placed in a damp paper towel on a plate covered with plastic foil to maintain high humidity. The plate was put in a dark cand cool place for vernilization.
11/4
The seed burst and grew a small taproot and was ready to put into soil.
I used 5 gallon pots with canna terra professional soil.
For my setup I use 4 x 150 watt full spectrum lights with a 20/4 light cycle.
The temperatures vary between 26°C and 29°C during the day. During the 4 hour dark cycle it varies between 20°C and 23°C.
The humidity is set for 70% but also varies between 60 and 80%.
I spray the soil with regular tapwater to keep it moist.
The F1 hybrid is growing very fast. I am really amazed about how little it stretches and how short the internode spaces are inbetween the shoot.
I gave the plant about a litre a day with a pH of around the 6.2
29/4
I fed the plant it's first nutrients on day 13. I gave the plant about an 8th dosage of the plagron nutrient line.
The temperature is rising where I'm living so im dealing with an overpressure in my tent because of extra inline fans. For now it will do.
I continued feeding an 8th dosage of the plagron nutrient line and increased it to a volume of 2 litres
Plant is growing insanely fast. Already it seems to want to flip into flower, showing white pistils. I dont know if this is because of the genetics or due to a certain stress it received.
It sometimes received low humidity due to the humidifier being empty. Also, the temperatures sometimes rise to 30 degrees Celcius.
Im not sure i'm happy with it flowering so fast, i started LST training already on day 15 which could also be a factor for it flowering fast. I will still continue training the plant
My next 2/5 medusa seed will receive topping on a later period and I might also not give it nutrients but water alone. I will also try and maintain constant environmental conditions.
Always open for other suggestions
The start of the pre-flower in week 4 already!
I continued training the plant with LST.
I also only fed the plant water this week because of the dark green colour of the leaves as well as light green tips on the end of the leaves
I am noticing the plant is stretching quite a lot. This is most likely because of it already being in the first week of flower getting into the 'stretch fase'
The conditions in the tent are reaching in the 30 degrees, so a CO2 bag is bought and an airco willl be installed. Updates coming soon and tips are welcome
Officialy the first real week of flower. Last week was pre-flower. I only fed the plant once with 1/8 flower nutes this week. Buds are starting to grow.
I am really amazed how fast it enters the flowering stage. The only disadvantage is not really being able to train the plant to create many flowersites. Hopefully topping makes a difference with 2/5 of the experiment.
I continued tying down the branches except for the main shoot. The main shoot is becoming thick and tough to pull down.
CO2 bag from exhale is installed. An airco is also installed and temps are now able to go down to 24 degrees Celcius.
1/5 is starting to grow bigger nugs that smell strong and gassy.
I bumped up the nutrients to 1/4 dosage instead of 1/8 dosage. The yellow pointy tips are starting to become less. The autoflowers generally speaking are easily overfed, especially with nitrogen. I do not flush the plant at the end of the cycle, becuase this cannabis myth was debunked recently. If fed correctly, there is no need for a flush. A 'flush' is only applicable if the plant is overfed.
The added CO2 exhaust bag really seems to help improve growth.
The branches are becoming very woody making it difficult to tie the shoots further down.
I'm noticing these genetics are very stretchy. Stretching cannabis makes for an easier trim but generally a lower yield. Streching cannabis strains are only favorable if it will pack it's buds alongside the entire shoot, fingers crossed it will.
Let's hope it will stack buds!
Buds are fattening slow and steady.
Pistils are turning beautifully orange.
Watering every 3 days, 3 litres each time.
Im curious to see how the fade will look like and which colours will be produced.
LST wires were removed.
I was sadly hoping for a bigger yield, let's see for the other four.
End of week 8 for medusa 1/5. Plant is looking beautiful with the LST.
I will reduce thd nutrients week by week from now, ensuring for a clean finish without flushing.
I still feel the veg time for these genetics are too short for big yields. I reckon it will yield around 60 grams.
2/5 was topped and will yield more by the looks of the amount of shoots compared to 1/5. Check my other diaries for the entire experiment.
Watering 3L every 2/3 days
Smell is very strong now.
It will probably be ready in 3 weeks time
The end of week 9. This week was a bit of a struggle due to temperatures. Airco was missing and a replacement was found after a week. The increasing temperatures caused heat stress to all four plants and slowed growth.
The buds are now starting to mature and ripen. The fade is starting now.
The trichomes are still underdeveloped with 50% cloudy and 50% translucent.
EC will be lower again this week.
I'm hoping it will be ready before day 80.
Check my other diaries for the progress with the other medusa plants.
The final day of week 10 already!
The buds are still getting fatter, the trichome development is still on it's way. I will check the trichomes twice a week and im waiting for around 10% amber.
Nutrients and EC is lowered again this week, harvest is around the corner im sure of it!
Hot summers are rough here, airconditioning is trying to keep the temps down.
I quite like the phenotype. It has quite some node space making for an easier trim. Also the amount of calyxes is huge and the density to it is super compact as well.
Fade is really starting to show and leaves are starting to fade.
Interestingly, this week revealed something unexpected. The pistols from the flower had already turned orange, but in this week she decided to produce more calyxes with white pistils, as if she is forming more buds, and now she is still getting fatter.
Anybody experienced something similar?
She is already on day 77 but i am gonna wait anoter 2 weeks at least. Although RQS suggests +/- 70 days harvest after germination this lady needs quite longer. Additionally, the thrichomes are not fully matured to my likings yet .
One of the final weeks for Medusa 1/5
I lowered the nutrients again this week, I dont flush at all. She might be chopped within the next two weeks
I'm looking for a 10% amber on the trichomes. I like a bit of CBN and a bit less psychoactive.
Please check my other diaries for the entire experiment. > Topping VS LST
Feel free to ask questions!
The final week of the first Medusa F1 1/5.
I will harvest her next week, im noticing the trichomes are becoming amber and the buds are just falling down and cant support their own weight anymore.
Im amazed about how fat they have become when ripening these lady just a couple weeks more.
I will feed her one final time of only 3L of water, and harvest when the soil is dry.
Stay tuned for the final week!
I will make a harvest blog once it is dried and I know the dry weight.
Check my other medusa F1's!
The harvest of the first medusa F1 hybrid at day 93 after germination.
The trichomes were starting to turn amber. I probably could have let her ripen for a bit longer.
I am amazed how fat she has gotten, the weight of the flower is too heavy for the branches. Way to go RQS for breeding such a fast growing autoflower.
She is already in the drying tent for 5 days now at a temperature of 19 °C with a humidity of around 55-60%. I want a nice and slow drying process to preserve the terpenes and cannabinoïds. This will take about 2 weeks in my opinion, when the branches start to give a clean snapping sound when bending.
I will make a harvest blog once the flowers are dried and I have weighed the buds for the yield.
This lady only received some LST and a little defoliation throughout the entire grow. I also dont flush the plant at the end since this myth was debunked by a scientific article. A flush is only needed if you overfed the plant. Dr bruce bugbee also confirmed this.
The dry tent smells of hay/grass, which is logical because the plant still has a lot of chlorophyll inside.
Untill the harvest blog!
Check my other Medusa F1's for the progress of the experiment. I hope to give other people advice in growing these F1 hybrids.
Boy oh boy, the final day of the first Medusa F1 Hybrid 1/5. Seed to harvest in 93 days.
The first medusa F1 grew super fast. Her vegetative period was very short, showing white pistils at day 18 already, but grew into a beautiful lady.
The first medusa was only subjected to LST and a little defoliation. The other Medusa plants from my diary (2/5 and 4/5),were topped and this definitely increased the amount of flower sites.
Nevertheless, she grew thick and fat with heavy buds smelling like a sweet petrol station.
The pistils turn bright orange and many calyxes are formed with hardly any leaves in between. I noticed after week 11 she started producing new calyxis with white pistils and therefore I waited a bit longer. I would recommend this and wait a bit longer to see if it happens for you too.
Some trichomes were starting to turn amber and I maybe could have waited a little longer, also for the lower part to develop more.
She was cut down on the 18th of July and was placed in my dark dry tent for 13 days at a temperature of 18 °C and a humidity of 60%. A long and slow dry is important to preserve terpenes.
After 13 days, on the 31st of July, the branches were making a cracking sound when bending, so I decided to take the branches out of the drying tent and trim them.
My 4 x 200W lights (on the box) only pull 50W from the wall so I think they are not super good.
I made pictures with a Nikon camera and a white background.
I smoked some and she tastes peppery with a sweet aftertaste. I will smoke more after a good long cure for at least 2-4 weeks in my jars.
Check the progress of my other medusa F1 diaries and see the full experiment if topping is beneficial for these F1's.
I would recommend trying out these amazing genetics and see for yourself.
Great job Royal Queen Seeds for breeding these cultivars.
