Growing it

Neutral

I will preface this by saying keep in mind that this is only half of my second grow ever, I also did it all organic with an 11/13 flowering light cycle, so the yield isn’t eye dropping.

This was a fun but difficult grow, and stirs my suspicion more that this really isn’t Acapulco Gold - I’m definitely not saying that it for sure isn’t, but if Barney’s Farm could share the origin story of how and where they actually found this strain and about who they obtained it from, then I could be more sure. I fully apologize for my doubt if it really is AG. This is a strong strain in THC content, but the high doesn’t match the AG experiences I have had previously, nor does it look or smell like it. Also the plant is short, stocky, and broad leaved, not like the AG of yore. I would say that all of this could just be the phenotype of this seed, but when researching other journals on this site and off, it seems to be the dominant phenotype. @donovanliam has a good example of the phenotype that we should be expecting more of from this strain. Mine didn’t smell very good while growing either - often it was a very acrid and unpleasant aroma. The pine smell that did come out during flowering has disappeared during curing, and it isn't because I cured bad - I did it completely by Ed Rosenthal standards. *Edit: after about two weeks into my three week paper bag cure, the smell has become more pleasant and sweeter, but is still not that great.

I kept my rating at a 6 though, because it does yield well, has a lot of THC content, and looks pretty. Since this does have lots of THC, this still could be for you if you don’t mind it being sub par on flavor and aroma. My trimming scissors were also completely caked with hash, and it gave me a good hash ball at the end. Also, I think that with synthetic nutrients, you can probably bring out more of the better attributes of this strain.

Made an almost instant fix when I noticed the brown spots commonly found under LED lighting. I highly recommend this if you are using both organic super soil and LED lighting. Half or even just a quarter dose is plenty.

I don't notice a big difference in bud size partially due to lack of experience, but I won't *not* use it during flowering.

You can actually notice a positive difference in growth and color after using this. The Kind Soil alone wouldn't have done as well without it. Didn't even have to use the full recommended amount.

I will be improving my ventilation and watering system next time around. I learned a lot about topping, defoliation, and watering properly this time, so I am looking forward to using the experience I gained on this round for the next one. I think with synthetic nutrients, it could have been a better growing experience.

This was an all organic grow with Kind Soil hot soil and a very minimal use of Recharge, Mammoth P, and Camg . I did Nugbuckets' Mainlining technique to get 8 even colas. My flowering light cycle was at 11/13 to bring out the individual characteristics of the plant. 11/13 has also been proven to accelerate the flower cycle. Compared to some other Barney’s Farm Acapulco Gold journal’s, the flowering time did seem to be faster. The trichomes were difficult to gauge - there were amber ones early on, a lot of mixed spots of clears/opaques/ambers, and there were still even a bunch of clear ones at the end, but since there were so many ambers at the time, I had to pull the plug.

Compared to the Grower’s Choice Blueberry Kush that grew beside here, she did have a larger yield. Although, the Blueberry Kush had only 6 colas because of a wind burn accident where I had to remove 2 of them, and the AG had all 8 of hers. Yet the BK still had taller and thicker colas though. After some calculation of averages from what the BK produced with only 6 colas it would have actually had more, somewhere around 71.65g instead of 53.74g.

Aside from all that, the Kind Soil for me isn't super fantastic. It works really well for some people, but I think maybe it lost some of its oomph being shipped to me. I also had a lot of negative pressure in my tent, so it kept things really dry, which also isn't good for living soils. So next time around I will install a better fan that has a temperature controlled variable speed. This will also help with my CO2 retention. I believe fixing these issues will help increase my yields.

Also, for “grow room size”, the open space in my tent was much larger than the plant itself, so I think that it is unfair to rank the g/ft^2 size based on tent space, so I used the actual square area of the plant itself for grow room size instead. For example, if I were growing in a 20’ x 20’ basement with a plant that is only 1’ in diameter, it wouldn’t make sense to rate the plant’s production off of the 400ft^2 area.

Also check out my Blueberry Kush journal (the clear winner of the two in taste, smell):

Stay tuned for my next grow! "The Church" by the legendary breeder, Green House Seed Co., and "Holy Grail Kush" by the powerhouse breeder DNA Genetics. It will be a "religious experience" - agnostically of course :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: .

Congrats on the 1st place win for November's "Diary of the Month"!
I somehow managed to pull in the 2nd place win, which is very cool since your input helped get me through the grow.
All the best, Cheers!

@VanBrando, thanks, Van! I am a bit humbled by the win. My yield wasn't the largest, but I suppose I did attempt to record my info in a way that made sense and to help others. I think you did a good job also! Kudos to your grow partner too - I think she probably got you some bonus points with those very informative photo shoots  !

so may guys lie about the dry weight numbers...this was very honest number you put down and much respect for that.

@DoctorPhilgood, lol. Just saw a plant same size as one I got a respectable 3.5 oz. some how they got 11 oz.

maybe on Jupiter lol

@Cannabot, thanks, Bot! Yeah, it is unfortunate how many people on this website falsify their weights. You can tell just by looking.

Very nice:seedling::+1:. Was a treasured strain that carried a high price in the mid- seventies. Back then probably came from Acapulco.?

@Montuno, it didn't have a very skunky smell though. It actually didn't smell very good at all.

@DoctorPhilGood,
I don't think it's an Acapulco Gold either.
More like a sativa type of skunk...

@JP148, yeah, and you can tell that BF breeded a broad leaf (indica) into it. It just isn't the thin whispy strain that it was back in the day.

Well done dude. Nice grow she's not true Acapulco gold .they crossed her with red river delta (????) .I have one of these girls going and I think if I hadn't tried her down she would be touching the roof already. Atb dude.

@Welovephattrees420uk, thanks! The variety of the phenotypes of this strain seem to be really varied.

Fantastic grow mate! Well done, I do reckon you could have left it another week maybe the smell and flavour would have improved? Also curing can take as long as 4/8 weeks I've found in some strains to fully develop the flavour and I find its much better to jar it when the stalks are still bendy and don't snap (alot of people say dry until the stalk snaps) I think that's too dry my self. :seedling::blush:

DoctorPhilgood
DoctorPhilgood

@Fruitgrower, the cure did make the smell better, but I do think that my pheno wasn't the greatest. There were already amber trichs, and I did run a cannabinoid tester on it and found that it does have a high THC and cannabinoid content.

@DoctorPhilgood, Hahaha. I hear you man. I'm really happy this site is available to us newbies. Cuts down on a lot of trial and error. And the fact people actually want to share knowledge, rather then gatekeep it, is the biggest reason for the success of my first grow.

Grateful for all of you that bring wisdom to the table and help us out.

@Jinks101, thank you very much! Looks like you got 2nd for Noob of the month, congrats to that! My first grow was a very small yield because of some big mistakes. It was before I knew about this site too, so it isn't on here (thank goodness, ha).
