Your chicken wire will protect for a bit, but later will be obstacle for side branching. Next time bigger eyes of mesh makes and protection and gives support for sides if they grow through.

It's rained almost non stop the past month
I'm shite and didn't protect her properly

You could try using organic neem as a natural pesticide it worked good for me against a range of pests, Good luck!
