Germination

Light set at level 2, 18 hours a day. 27 inches from bottom of tent. Inline fan adjusted to keep humidity 40-80%. After germination oscillating fan turned on inside tent to harden stems. Humidifier added after germination. Misting soil with misting spray bottle to keep soil damp. Covered pots with saran wrap to try and keep humidity in after first few days, removed after sprouting. White Widow sprouted at 5 and 8 days. PGC at 7. Other PGC seed not sprouted. The second White Widow seed to sprout held onto its seed for a day or two. I misted and let it be, it eventually fell off. For people tuning in for the Fox Farm Happy Frog, I had a weed in one of my Purple Ghost Candy pots! It did not look like cannabis, and was on the edge, but I let it go just in case. A day or two later the cannabis did sprout, and I removed the foreigner. Maybe the folks who sterilize their soil are onto something. Edit 8/30. It appears I started these in Fox Farm Ocean's Forest, not Happy Frog. About the AC Infinity tent, it is very sturdy. Don't worry about your cats jumping on top. It will hold them. Our 5 lb. Lycoi spends a lot of time on top, but our heavier male also will occassionally jump on top without issue. 8/22/23 The last Purple Ghost Candy seed finally sprouted. 100% success. Not sure if it will make it though. It's tiny.

8/19 Changed water in daily misting to aquarium water from a fish tank. Day 10 from planting. 8/20/23 Increased light intensity to Level 3 on 200W Ionboard S24 lights. Day 11 8/22/23 Last Purple Ghost Candy sprouted, 13 days after planting. Day 13 Increased light level to 4. Increased inline fan level to level 2. Trying to keep humidity closer to 80%. A Cloudforge T3 humidifier from AC Infinity should be arriving tomorrow to help with this. The next week I will begin watering with Neptune's Harvest nutrients and aquarium water. 8/24 Installed CloudForge T3. Will not connect to controller. I guess I'll have to use it manually.

I want to begin feeding my plants nutrients this next week. I have nutrients with NPK values of 0-0-1 and 2-4-1. I am using water from a stocked fish tank. Do I use nutrient infused water with every watering? So daily pretty much? Or should some watering be just water?

Hi, first of all you dont need to water every day. quite the contrary, during the early vegetative stage your plant won't need that much water and give the soil some time to dry is of good health to the plant (a dry period). With regards to nutrients,I give nutrients every time I water, if I notice that I might be approaching a salt buildup I might skip 1 feeding session and gice it plain water only but this is the exception. Good luck with your grow, if you need anything else feel free to drop me a message and I can send you a couple of articles on the topics you want. (for the most part RQS has vrry good articles)

8/24/23 Added Cloudforge T3 humidifier from AC Infinity. I've heard some people struggle with the hose becoming clogged. After configuring it the way I have pictured, it has never become clogged. A lot of water drips out; it will fill a 2-3 cup tumbler in 8 hours. Mine would not connect to the controller on installation. It appears the cable was bad, and AC Infinity is sending me a new one. After troubleshooting, and plugging my light cord into the humidifier (which then connected the humidifier to the controller), the humidifier probe has been measuring 5-10% lower than the controller probe, which seems to be more accurate. Before they were pretty much right on. Day 16 from planting. 8/27/23 Leaves on WW curling/wilting. Watered with syringe, avoiding leaves. Fan level 2. Light level to 5 on Ionboard S24. Day 17. 8/28/23 Potted up to 5 gallon cloth mixture of Fox Farm Ocean's Forest in bottom half, Happy Frog in the top. Watered with Fox Farm nutrients. 2ml Grow Big and 5 ml Big Bloom in a gallon. Took two gallons to water. Raised light to 32" from plant. Light to level 7. Fan to level 3. Day 18 8/29/23 Increased light to 100%. Day 19 In the future I will start in the 5 gallon cloth buckets. Starting in the smaller pots made watering very difficult to gauge. I was in there with a nice misting spray bottle that I wore out pumping it so much misting daily with aquarium water. Not sure if over-watering is what got the one White Widow to curl. When I repotted things seemed dry. With the 5 gallon pots I can definitely feel moisture under the surface when I poke a finger in. Now that light is at 100% I will lower it gradually to 24" as AC Infinity recommends.

Day 21 9/3/23 Humidity to 70% Day 24 9/4/23 Watered two gallons at 5 ml GB and 10 ml BB per gallon. Day 25. Reduced humidity to 65%. Growth has exploded over the past week. I think I'm getting close to topping, and I'm not sure if I should get rid of two plants. AC Infinity says its a two plant tent, but I'm hesitant to kill any of these guys as it's my first grow! Gradually increasing nutrients to the plants. AC Infinity is sending me a new USB C cord for the humidifier. Using a known good one seemed to connect it to the controller. The White Widow in the back has bounced back very well from the lower leaves curling. I kind of want to cut them off now, but hesitant to mess with it.

9/8/23 Took everything out of the tent. Drained the drainage trays and wiped down all debris and moisture. Day 29 from planting Watered 10 ml Grow Big/gall and 15 ml Big Bloom/gallon. 2 gallons 9/9/23 Topped all plants. Two biggest plants from each strain are WW #1 and PGC #1 Day 30 9/13/21 15 ml Grow Big and 20 ml Big Bloom per gallon. Watered 2 gallons. Day 34 They seem to be growing so squat instead of tall. Isn't that what people want? It just seems irregular and weird. Amazed at how fast they are growing, and all the new secondary growth after topping. Getting colder here at night. We'll have to close the windows at night. The other morning it was 63 in the tent I think. Significant other complains about the lights at night. They turn off at 11 until 5 am, but I'm thinking about putting some boxes around the air intakes to keep the light level down in the room. Maybe it will keep it darker inside when I get to flowering as well.

9/17/23 watered 2 gallons. 15 ml GB and 25 ml BB per gallon. Day 38 9/19/23 starting to get a bit of a dank smell in the room. Significant other complained, so I tried putting dryer sheets in the inline outlet. Still complained so I cut styrofoam to fit the window and piped it outside. Turned AC Infinity fan up to level 5. Day 40 9/20/23 watered 2 gallons. 15 ml GB and 30 ml BB per gallon. Rearranged plants and installed Scrog net. Removed some lower leaves on a few plants. Day 41 The tent is a little crowded so I'm not sure how I feel about the Scrog net. Part of me thinks I should do without for this grow. In the future I need to make sure the 5 gallon pots are well filled on transplant. The soil really settled in them. Wondering if I should give them a rest from nutrients next watering.

Ordered another fan to try and deal with the high humidity. I hope I didn't trim too aggressively. Seems like I'm getting closer to flowering and don't want to screw it up now.

Watered two gallons. 1/4 tsp. Beastie Bloomz, 35 ml Big Bloom and 2.5 ml Tiger Bloom per gallon. Switched into flower. 12/12 light schedule. I had hoped the Purple Ghost Candy runt would catch up a little, but a few of the branches are getting tall, and it is crowded already. From what I understand they should all get about twice as tall as they are now right before going into flower. I'm always worried I trimmed too much.

I'm guessing this is nutrient lockout. Yesterday they were thirsty, so I watered by usual two gallons of aquarium water, but added no other nutrients. It only seems like one plant is being affected. How long should I withhold any nutrients; should I dial back when I do resume?

Burnt edges and leaf tips suggest nutrient burn. I see some of your leaf tips are turned downward. Overall your garden looks ok. Flush your plants soil with clean pH 6.2 water and let them dry out. Then re-feed but with a reduced strength solution.

10/15/23 Day 66 Some browning on leaf edges on WW#2. Looks like nutrient burn from pictures online. They were looking thirsty so I watered them two gallons of water from the fish tank but didn't add any other nutrients. Raised the lights up a good bit. Removed affected leaves. The issue does not appear to be spreading and will probably withhold nutrients for another feeding or two. 10/18/22 Day 69 No more brown leaves have appeared.

Lowered light. I'm amazed at the differences between the two strains. The Purple Ghost Candy plants have really stretched, with even the runt taller than both White Widows. Next watering I will resume nutrients with some reduced dosages. Some buds definitely seeming to develop.

I think I got confused when folks said they fed their plants every watering. I assumed at the dosage listed for the products, instead of dividing it among feedings. So this diary is essentially what happens when you feed 2-3 times the recommended amount with Fox Farm fertilizers.

Been watering ever other day. One gallon plain water. I think I'm getting close, but it's hard to tell with the jewelers' loupe. A lot of the white widows still look kind of clear, while the purple ghost candy definitely has some browning. The buds don't seem to be getting much larger, so I'm thinking maybe this weekend I'll chop them down and see what I have.

It will depend on various factors such as the richness of the soil, and the size of pot and plant. If you use a nutrient rich substrate the plants should not need anything in the first 3 weeks. Just a root bost for the first week. If, on the other hand, you use a light mixture, you could start in the 2nd week, but always depending on the size of your plants, the ones you are showing right now should not need anything, they are still so young and small.

I'm on day ~55, Seedsman WW, also in MN weirdly enough. One of mine responded very poorly to the UV coming on in week 6 and are looking about as crispy as yours; guess it wasn't healthy enough to withstand it. I'm looking at starting harvest this week, but I'm going to have to use a rolling harvest. Lower nugs just aren't looking ripe yet. When do you think you'll harvest?
JazzBerries
JazzBerriescommenteda year ago
@MinnesotaMarijuana, Ha, I'm actually running the dehumidifier at night to keep it below 50%. I have tanks and plants all over my living space. I saw your comment about aquariums and definitely agree about how most people test pH. I love API's test bottles. Cheap, accurate, but cumbersome to use regularly. Beyond the obvious, you can use it to test actual soil ph. I make a supertanate solution by vigorously mixing soil samples with distilled water, than covering with cling wrap. Once it separates, you take a sample from the top clear layer with a pipet or syringe or just decant it carefully; it might take 24-48 hours maybe far more if the dirt is mineral rich/clay. Test the clear samples like you normally would with API's kit. (Take it with a grain of salt, I got the idea from someone's undergrad research that found API to be more accurate than off the shelf soil specific test kits and reasonable compared to professional testing.) I look forward to seeing your harvest. Good on you for sharing!

@JazzBerries, I'm not turning the humidifier on because I'm concerned with bud rot. I already made enough mistakes on my first grow! Yes, I'm a little sad about the buds not getting real big. I haven't really smoked for 20 years except for here and there, so I'll have plenty with enough to give away. I might not be able to experiment with edibles very much. I've dried a couple buds that I cut accidentally or were on stems that I pruned and it isn't "one hit shit" but pretty on par with what was going around when I was a kid that was good weed. Better than most of the stuff we bought. I want to start up again right away, but I don't want to leave styrofoam in the window for the air ventilation exhaust. Thanks for the look, and good luck with your grow!

@MinnesotaMarijuana, I should have been more specific. I'm on day 137, but they sat in veg, under minimal care, for a very long time while I finished the last grow of autos. It's been over 8 weeks since I completed the transition to 12/12. Mine are looking CRISPY/fade starting to creep into the sugar leaves. I don't know if I can keep it up without risking bud rot from dead plant material getting closer and closer to the buds. It sucks that I'll probably end up with another batch of slightly under-ripe, not fully realized buds, but its all a learning process. Now I know to take it VERY EASY on the UV and light this late as well as keep the bloom nutrients flowing until the end. Also modified my home mixed potting soil with additional coir and vermiculite to help the micro-nutrient/mineral content and prevent compaction. Cheers, take care, and enjoy the legal bud!

Nice lookin' plants you got. But boy, I'm worried about your tent getting light leaks with having/allowing your cats on it lol. I have my tent in a room that my cat only goes into when I'm in just to make sure. She's tried once already to climb it with her claws... Anywho, as a new grower myself, I'm reading here you are going to Top earlier next time? What week or day did you Top them? When will you try to Top them next? Do you recall how many nodes they had? After what node did you Top them at? Good stuff though. Going to have to read your whole journal here later today. Pretty much the same setup I have.

MinnesotaMarijuanacommenteda year ago
@RallosZek, I topped week 4 for all plants despite the last Purple Ghost Candy being so far behind. The White Widows I think were on their fourth node As time went by the PGCs really turned it on, and the "runt of the litter" is now the tallest plant. I really like how the last PGC, which was only on its second or third node, bushed out in a way the other plants didn't. I think I could have done some pretty serious training with how much it bushed out, but unfortunately it was so far behind at first I couldn't even really bend it around the trellis, and by the time it got big enough the WWs were dominating the grow space. I'm amazed at the difference in the strains' growth. The White Widows came on strong, and accordingly, dominated space and attention. I did not expect the Purple Ghost Candies to rally so much in the final weeks of vegetation and into flowering. It's my first grow, and in the future I will grow fewer plants. Probably two, but never more than three again. I'll also stick to one strain. It's so crowded, and the PGCs have really been pushed to the side. I'll also add in ph testing and PPM. I might look at some other nutrients. The cats are pretty good, it's mostly our Lycoi that finds herself on top but she's only 5 lbs, rarely goes up there, and I've seen no damage. The only possible light leaks I've seen is from the vents at the bottom of the tent. I'm not sure if I want to start another grow this winter as I have to vent the inline outside, and I don't want styrofoam in the window all winter. One interesting note is that I have run the oscillating fan from AC Infinity the entire grow and it is still going great. Day 55 I added another fan to circulate air more and reduce humidity. Some budget fan off Amazon. That fan lasted maybe three weeks before the oscillator wore out. Bazooka Growers Oscillating 6" fan for 27 bucks. Should have just spent a bit more for another AC Infinity fan.

@@MowerGrower, I'd like to have some versatility to the light brightness. I haven't tested my lights, but I just don't know if it has the range to limit intensity like that throughout the grow. I am thinking about adding another of the same lights, 200W Ionboard S24 from AC Infinity, to the grow tent so I can more gradually increase brightness throughout the grow.

@Reggetable, I've heard you can expect them to about double in height after entering flower. That is what I will plan for. I am going to go ahead and keep all four plants in the tent, just give priority to the two best ones. So it may get a little crowded. Topped this week and getting a lot of secondary growth even just a few days after doing so.

Plants can stretch up to 3 times their size from the switch, although this will also depend on different factors such as Light, nuts & feed, health..

Are you testing Ph in the soil?

@@MowerGrower, I used aquarium water the whole grow with the idea that nutrients from the fish might help out some. Having some experience with ph testing from aquariums, I'm skeptical of the devices people use to test ph, and actual litmus paper or chemical tests are so expensive to be doing every watering. However, I think I will try something for my next grow. People who know a lot more about growing than me seem to use them with great success.

@MinnesotaMarijuana, if you use distilled water you don’t need to do anything with ph it comes at 7 but the reaction to air puts it at 5.8

@Seedsman, I am not. I was thinking Ph and ppm would be some things to get into on the next grow. I've removed affected leaves and am withholding nutrients for two feedings. The brown leaves are not spreading. I've learned a few things so far: Grow one strain at a time, reduce number of plants to two, maybe three at a time, top earlier, start seeds with paper towel method or water and plant directly into 5 gallon pots. I might add the Cal/Mag to nutrients next time (we have really hard water and never thought Ca supplementation would be necessary. I've always felt I was somewhat conservative with adding nutrients (although its not really possible to know how much nitrates are being added with the aquarium water), I'm glad I was taking that approach now.
the end.
