I saw your comment about aquariums and definitely agree about how most people test pH. I love API's test bottles. Cheap, accurate, but cumbersome to use regularly.
Beyond the obvious, you can use it to test actual soil ph. I make a supertanate solution by vigorously mixing soil samples with distilled water, than covering with cling wrap. Once it separates, you take a sample from the top clear layer with a pipet or syringe or just decant it carefully; it might take 24-48 hours maybe far more if the dirt is mineral rich/clay. Test the clear samples like you normally would with API's kit. (Take it with a grain of salt, I got the idea from someone's undergrad research that found API to be more accurate than off the shelf soil specific test kits and reasonable compared to professional testing.)
