On my next diary i have included week one in the germination week, whereas in this diary i did not, but day/number is posted alongside each picture. This is the first time I've germinated with a peat pellet/ jiffy pot, I soaked it in shallow water for 30 mins before placing the seed directly from a fresh seed pack into the moist (hehe) pellet. There was a pre indented hole which i planted the seed in and removed some loose soil from the pellet to loosely cover it. I usually germinate via a paper towel in a dark place and then directly into soil once popped. I preferred this method to the latter, I can leave the pellet in the dark and not have to water it again for 3 days, and by 5 days it should be above ground, ready to be planted into her final pot. Thanks for reading.
Plagaron light mix is a fertilised substrate so shouldn't need a feed until week 2. A little information about this grow while nothing is really happening. This Is a budget setup, my ultimate goal like all of us, is to one day fully supply ourselves without external purchasing. I will list all the items I have, and how much they cost so you can fully understand some of the costs. I am a beginner, my first two grows failed. I achieved growing a plant but very little bud. But we've researched, and researched some more so advice is super appreciated, as you'll see further in I believe we may have burned a set of leaves. We are using plagaron light mix which was around £20 for 50l, enough for two grows with 7gal pots. We have a £75 grow light, a £5 small fan which we will be purchasing another of. £2.50 garden ties and for 5 fabric pots it was £5. We have ph down £10, calmag £10, plagaron terra grow £15 and plagaron terra bloom £15. A ph tester £5. Silver thermal foil £2.50 for two. Around 150 pounds. Extremely cheap. Not including the seeds. I'm just trying to be honest, transparent and help someone else in need of statistics.
So far from all we've researched we are on track, soon I believe we light burn two of our leaves. We aren't used to the intensity of the lights, at the back end of the previous week she stretched an ungodly amount and actually fell over. I didn't capture an image of this, I was too ashamed. My ten pound seed. Flopped over healthy top leaves, touching the soil. Luckily the roots had only slightly breached the peat pellet. I dug it up, planted it deeper and this allowed it to stand again. Luckily she survived the stress, may have even strengthened her! As you can see this week she bounced back and continued growing phew. Also 2l of ph balanced water with 1ml of calmag every 5 days or so, or when the pot is completely dry down to a full fingers deep. (To the knuckle, baby.) I've found with each water she shoots up this way.
The first photos are from mid week two. The burnt leaves (we believe, advice welcome) we raised the light, and no other fresh growth are affected so we assume we've rectified the problem by doing this.
We are at 15 days old. My wife decided she wanted to lst this is all experimental to us from the first tie down at around 5pm, to the adjustment at 1am she had already turned upright again and needed another tightening. We did one anchor line from one side of the pot at the base of the plant, and directly adjacent we put the second line used for bending in the opposite direction to the anchor line. It is amazing to see her change so drastically. My lil bonsai already taking shape. Is she looking healthy at the moment? I always worry. She's like my baby. My wife is less so bothered and stresses often to leave her be (the plant, sometimes her too!lol)
We started administering grow nutrients now, because the soil can quickly be depleted of nutrients from a healthy plant with good root uptake. We first mix calmag, then nutes followed by ph down (miniscule amounts) to achieve around 6.3-6.5. My grow schedule recommends 5ml of the grow, but I only use 2.5ml or around half to avoid nute burn. Calmag 1ml all notes per 2l each watering around 5 days apart.
Day 17, update I have raised the lights further to try and promote some stretching so I can soon in the near future try achieve a 45degree angle tie down to expose the node at the back which isn't receiving any light. So far she's responded well to lst and is upright again within a few hours meaning multiple tie downs a days. Usually 2. But so far she's achieving the shape I am looking for.
Day 18, nothing much happened today, she stretched a little more so I staked her down a little further. She's looking good so far. She's dry on the top layer bit about half a fingers deep She's still moist (lol) so I think she may be watered tomorrow depending on how dry and light the pot feels. Fan directly blowing on her is also drying her out quicker now, that or She's drinking more.
She's getting bushier and thicker stems each day. Lst seems to be working, the lower nodes are stretching more than if I'd left her to christmas tree. Hopefully my lst trickery at such a young age has convinced her she has multiple top colas. We'll see. Stay tuned!
Day 19 lst update,
Her canopy seems to be evening out now, and she's definitely getting bushy. Being able to see the plant each day is helping remind me she is growing via the photos, all be it slowly 😅 hopefully she's on track! Still fiddling with light heights. Currently dimmed to 50%
She has been watered today. 2L of ph corrected water with 2ml of calmag and 2.5ml of plagron terra grow. I'm seeing some paleness on an odd few leaves so upped them calmag to try keep her happy.
She looks healthy. I'm constantly comparing my grow to those I see on YouTube week 3, although I burned some leaves she's looking bushy, green and there's multiple stretches of node sites from the early lst. Her main stem is very thick and tree like which is exciting. Still watering at 2.5ml of plagron terra grow as there's no white pistils yet (phew). And upped her calmag to 2ml per 2l last feed as I saw some slight paleness on leaves and wanted to nip any problems in the bud (literally.) Continually leaf tucking throughout the day but she's under quite a strong breeze aswell. Staked her down in some places and re tied her today as I removed it for a night. Anchor line was left in whilst I did this. She's still being watered every 4-5 days as that's when she typically dries out. Let me know if she's on track! Notice anything that needs my attention? Any advice is appreciated. I pray to you weed gods on here to show me the way to the grow light!
Day 23 advice update;
We are having some rusting spots appear on some leaves. Any ideas what could be causing this? When she is watered (frequency mentioned above) she is receiving 2.5ml of plagron terra grow nutrients in 2l of water. When she is watered there is no run off or little to none. Please advise!!
Apart from this I am astonished. She's very bushy, I can count at least 6 potential top sites which means I was at least successful with lst. Hoping all the preparation will have her well set up for stretching into the flower phase. Unsure if I saw one white pistil today or not on the main cola branch. Will update in the next few days with the ol' written word and will be still updating daily via pictures.
Day 24 update. Watered today with 2l of water and 1ml of calmag and low stress trained again since her main node was higher than the rest. No nutes apart from calmag on this feed. I predict she'll need watering by the 15th-16th of November.
Day 25 update, I snapped the main cola lst'ing I know, I know. I was shaking, my wife wasn't even home to help with her tiny nimble hands and that left me with the task of taping her up with clear cellotape. But, I rolled watched a couple of videos and said, f*ck it let's see! *it wasn't a clean snap, only about 1/3rd of the stem split, I created a makeshift operating table under her using the very same firm garden wire that twanged as I picked up the pot and snapped her. It was the second node from the top, and her leaves drooped every so slightly for an hour, by 3 hours her leaves were praying again and seem to have recovered. Jeez. Intense day. She seemed to enjoy her just ph'd water and calmag as I was advised not to feed nutes with every feed. Still wet. But drinking well. I mean hopefully, with the stress she redirects even more to the lower nodes that have formed potential tops. It's a really nice even canopy, bushy, her stems thickening and she is gaining height. I may have seen a double pistil, what is this indicating? May pose a grow question and show the surgery to my girl, get advice on how it'll affect it, have I done a good job of fixing it and will my wife kill me for snapping her? Stay tuned lol.
Day 28 update
Tomorrow we will be entering week 4 and she will be one month old from sprout. Her lower nodes have finally gotten long enough so that I can steak them down towards the edges of my pot and staked around 5 potential cola sites. Her nutes will be increased to 5ml in her next feed, as very soon she will require bloom, her sex pistils are starting to show on a few sites. Fighting for that extra growth and stretch before flower. Very excited for this upcoming week I'm expecting explosive growth!
Day 29, beginning of week 5. Fed on day 28, 2L ph'd water, upped to 5ml of terra grow and 1ml calmag. Noticed some 8-9 fingered leaves while leaf tucking, apparently signs of a healthy plant. Continuing lst with lower nodes.
Day 30, adjusted the lst and re staked her down.
Day 31, removed the steaks as the lower bud sites had stretched. Continually leaf tucking
Day 32, did light leaf defoliation around 8 leaves.
Day 33 removed the stakes and placed them further up the growth. Tomorrow she will be watered.
Day 34, watered with 2.5ml plagron terra grow, 2.5ml plagron terra bloom and 1ml calmag. dropped some equipment on her when trying to clean the grow area. Effectively thimmed her as half of the top still remains. I say to remove the top completely that remains so it can send energy to the side nodes, wife says leave it and let it grow, see how it turns out. So wife wins. (Smart husband) and her half thimmed main cola will be left (what's left) intact. Luckily she is not quite flowering yet, only just entering pre flower. Plenty of other bud sites. Interesting experiment.
So I believe we are entering pre flower. *edit i have changed the week back to veg and beginning week 6 (7 on the diary) as flower. White pistils everywhere, tops should be forming this week/next. Accidental FIMing of top main cola. Resulting in the secondary top nodes stretching and the main cola has grown diagonally on its own to allow light to the lower nodes. Fascinating. Already rerouting power to the next top area. So resilient even after all my mistakes. I'm very happy with the progress of my first proper grow. More lst today. She will soon be upright again, getting hard to leaf tuck with all the Bush forming. She smells earthy, slight citrus. Very strong skunk smell.
Day 37 (26th nov) plant still felt heavy ish so will be watered tomorrow Day 38
Day 38 watered 2l ph corrected water as last feeding she had nutrients.
Day 39, removed 5 lower bud sites not receiving light, so light lollipopping and defol around 10 leaves.
Day 41, removed around 4 more lower growth sites that were weak and defoliated. Trying to thin out the canopy before she actually enters flower. Wondering how long she'll be in preflower. Really waiting for the "dandelion" phase atm to signal full blown flower. Her next feeding (unsure when) will be Plagron. 2.5ml terra grow and 2.5ml terra bloom and possibly 1ml calmag if required.
Day 42 and she is 6 weeks old today. I am aware the diary is a week ahead it won't let me change it atm. So at week 7 she is technically 6 weeks old.
She is 42 days old today. This is beginning of week 6. Pre flower is still ongoing but I definitely feel with the defoliation and removing of some lower growths it should start sending energy to buds. I will begin uploading more images now, of the top and side view and some images of bud sites. She's done smashing so far. Very wide and low with the lst. She is still on transitional nutes until full flower.
Day 43 watered 2.5ml terra and 2.5ml bloom and 1ml calmag in 2l of water ph'd to 6.5. (Last watering 5 days ago day 38 with plain ph'd water) every 2 days I will upload pictures of top progress. My first set being on day 42, then day 44 and so on.
Day 45 small defoliation to open up centre growth
Day 46 watered 2l water with 5ml terra grow and 2ml calmag
Day 48 heavy defol again she just keeps rebushing every few days with new light spots opened up not much to report atm apart from slow bud growth and still some stretching occurring also. Stinking out my house already smells superb!
Been busy a few days, kinda just checking her every so often see if she's grown, today 11th December lollipopping due to under growth not receiving light. She looks good. Still in pre flower. Last watering was 5ml terra grow in 2l of phd water with 2ml calmag put her on a tub so she's closer to light without moving height due to her sister sharing that light.
Roughly on week 11, been real busy.. holiday, then christmas and new year. She's still fattening really well. Her sheer size is slowing her down, she's finally done stretching upwards and is now focusing on packing on. She still has ages, I'm guesstimating another month at least. Anyway here's some update photos for this week.
Added some nug shots from various bud sites around the plant, how are they coming on? Now she's stopped stretching she's starting to frost more day by day and her buds do seem to be growing, how long would you say is left? Please let me know??
These plants were harvested early due to mold issues in the plant room and I didn't want it to spread to the plant so we quickly harvested them although they could have gone longer due to lst and size. Overall she was highly resilient to my first time grow mistakes. Very easy to lst. The plant was highly flexible and with my new found skills would love to replicate the potential on a new environment. She was delicious.
