June 1: placed sprouted seed into soil in a peat pot. Sitting on heating mat at 25 C in the dark with a slice of apple to provide ethylene gas. This apple trick only works before seedlings are exposed to light apparently.
This Auto Overdose is a replacement for my failed Auto Opium dirary. I lost an Opium seed opening the package, one was too cold and wouldn’t germinate, and the last one got too hot and was cooked under the light. Oops. C’est la vie. Try again with the Auto Overdose this time.
June 7: started another Auto Overdose because this first one also did not develop in soil.
The problem appears to be using an apple slice. The idea is to apply ethylene gas briefly at an early stage of seed development. See July 2023 PNAS paper by E. Brenya
https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/2/7/pgad216/7221976?login=false
But, it seems an apple slice is not working. I used a whole apple when starting the photoperiods, tomatoes and peppers, and it seemed fine, but all the recent autos where i used an apple slice failed. Maybe the browning (oxidation) of the apple flesh gives off the wrong kind of gas. Try again.
June 15: the start is a month later than it should have been. Long story but I was fucking around trying to germinate seeds and learned a few things. See my failed Auto Opium diary. This is my last auto seed from Divine so hopefully this one works.
June 19: still seems a bit iffy but it is starting to grow.
June 21: looks like she’ll make it. About 3-4 weeks later than I’d like for an auto here, but she’ll work out.
My AC infinity UV lights arrived so I’ll be able to make the sunlight in Edmonton in September seem like California in July. That extra UV should boost my THC content nicely. I expect these lights to really put my bud quality to another level. 👍👍 very exciting.
June 22: planted peat pot into final 5 gallon grow bag. Tore bottom off peat pot and ripped sides. Warm overnight so she’ll be outside for first time.
June 23: first hot days of summer. Late to start autos but with warm weather they will start quickly.
June 28: not much change in the first few days but she should start growing quickly here soon. Gave first compost tea this morning.
June 29: she should start strong vegetative growth soon.
July 1: last 30 days have been 1.5 C cooler than historic average and 3 C cooler than last year. Starting the autos late was likely not a bad thing this year.
July 5: starting fourth week and she is finally getting some traction. The conditions are good for some fast vegetative growth. I need to remember to not over-fertilize this auto.
July 8: faster growth starting. She’s bigger than the Chemdawg auto.
July 10: topped this auto early in the morning. Likely needs some N.
July 11: fan leaves are getting bigger after being topped. She’s about 50% bigger than the Chemdawg auto which was started at the same time. Other diaries have the auto overdose not autoflowering and we’ll have to see what happens.
My autos were started about 3 weeks later than I wanted this year but it turned out to be a very cool spring. These autos are catching summer heat and hopefully it’s not too much for them at this early stage.
July 12: she’s noticeably bigger this morning. Done with heat wave now and back to ideal cannabis growing temperatures.
July 13: she’s growing quickly now and we’ll see if she autoflowers soon. I need flowering to start by the end of July.
Soil is overwatered for the autos despite trying to move them out of the rain. No need to water for a bit.
July 14: tied down to grow bag.
July 15: gave up on tie down and released her this morning.
July 19: been quite hot the last few days (32 C) and there is some wildfire smoke starting this morning. Heat wave to continue for another 7 days. Yay.
Overall she’s doing well after the topping. Some autos don’t like being topped, but this Auto Overdose is big enough and fast enough that topping is fine to do.
July 20: smoky this morning to go with our 8 day run of temperatures above 30 C. This weather should continue for another five days or so.
Auto Overdose is looking good after the topping with some nice lower shoots that I’m going to encourage with the scrog net. Just loosely placed and intended to hold down fan leaves while exposing growth tips to sunlight. Super easy and is working on the photoperiods, so why not?
Late start for my autos this year, but Overdose is looking good. Still calling this a vegetation week for now, but might upgrade to flowering.
July 22: looking good with four nice growth tips happening. She seems a bit too lime green so I added some Nature’s Source cuz I had it around and it will provide some N.
July 24: damnit, broke one of the two main stems while trying to shape it using LST. Taped together again within 15 minutes but she’s looking quite wilted and unhappy about it so I might be losing that limb.
July 27: staring week 7 and she seems to be preflowering but I’m going to force flower this auto by sticking it in the dark garage with my photoperiod plants. The change to 12 h of darkness for a couple weeks should kick it into flowering mode.
I’ve seen a few growers commenting that their Auto Overdose wasn’t auto flowering and I don’t want to wait any longer to find out. It’s the end of July and things need to be flowering by now to finish in time before winter.
The stem I broke a few days ago is showing signs of life and looks like it will more or less recover. Update: Changed my mind and removed stem as it was slowing overall growth. Cut the loss and move forward. C’est La vie, etc.
July 28: plant has an okay shape considering I broke a stem. Nice lower branches came up after the plant was topped. Looks promising.
July 31: looking good. Removed a single large fan leaf at the top that was shading too many bud sites.
Aug 3: starting the second week of force flowering where I put her in the dark garage for 12 h per night.
This is supposed to be an auto but like several others have observed, these plants don’t autoflower. By force flowering it will be able to finish flowering this fall before it gets too late.
Aug 4: adjusted the loose Scrog net so that it is higher up on the branches and helping to ‘lift and separate” the various branches. Lots of side branches in this auto that is not quite an auto. Maybe they mixed the seeds up and this is actually Overdose Fast.
Aug 6: added UV lights from AC Infinity. Like all their gear, thseee are well designed and manufactured. These are indoor lights so fair weather use only. Can’t list lights on outdoor grows on Growdiaries but it is ionbeam UV lights.
At the other end of the light spectrum, the far red light I use is Forever Green indoors (FGI) 730 nm light bar. The far red light is used for a couple seconds at dusk to put plant into dark mode two hours faster.
Aug 8: defoliated lower buds and removed anything growing in toward the centre.
Aug 10: now done two weeks of force flowering in the garage. This was supposed to be an auto, but like a lot of other growers here, I found this didn’t autoflower. That’s okay and I forced flowering by putting her in the dark garage along with the other photoperiod plants.
Hopefully these are just mis-packaged Overdose Fast seeds.
Aug 13: overdose is making good progress with flower development finally kicking in after a couple weeks of forcing.
Aug 14: added 3 tablespoons of a 50:50 mix of Power Bloom and malted barley as a top dressing and watered in.
Aug 17: Auto Overdose is a nice plant but it’s not an auto. I started this one late and only topped it once thinking it was an auto. Other growers have noticed it isn’t an auto too, so I forced it in the dark garage. Flowering has to be started by the end of July here or it won’t finish in the fall.
The flowers are forming quickly and I suspect this is actually Overdose Fast.
So far so good, and good genetics for a Fast plant.
Aug 18: no UV light today unfortunately but it was decently sunny. Scrog net certainly seems like a good idea. This plant is asymmetrical because I broke one of the two main stems a couple weeks after topping. This changed the shape of the plant so it’s become one-sided as if I was growing it up against a wall. Lots of nice lower branches came up so she looks pretty good now.
Aug 24: starting the fifth week of flowering. This plant was started late so it didn’t get as much veg time, but it is flowering nicely and is doing quite well.
Updated diary to list this as Overdose Fast which seems more likely than Auto Overdose. Likely just mis-packaged, and also based upon other growers comments about their autos not autoflowering.
Aug 26: she’s doing well and buds are forming. Watered with potassium silicate this evening.
Aug 31: Overdose is doing fine and is now five weeks into flowering (or a week behind my two big photoperiods). I broke one of the main stems about a week after topping so it has a weird shape but there are lots of good bud sites so she’ll be fine.
Shorter veg time than my two big photoperiod plants and only topped once because I was expecting an auto not a photoperiod plant. If it’s Overdose Fast I’m cool with that as I’ve decided that I prefer fast photos to autos which are more sensitive to setbacks and generally trickier to deal with at large scale.
Sep 2: strong plant with lots of buds.
Sep 4: adding some potassium silicate every couple days lately while watering.
Sep 7: this is a great plant, but it’s likely Overdose Fast and not an Auto version. Strange shape because I broke a stem after topping and expected an auto (single topping) and not a photoperiod plant that I would have manifolded. C’est la vie.
Sep 11: progressing nicely.
Sep 12: raining this morning but buds are looking heavier. Noticeable bud growth lately.
Sep 15: starting week 8 of flowering and she is putting on weight. Not a super fast flowering plant but it is working and will be done just in time by mid-October.
This plant was started late and was supposed to be an autoflower. So not maximizing her potential as a photoperiod with just a single topping, but she is still doing great.
Added a couple tablespoons of Power Bloom to soil and watered in. Probably 3-4 weeks to go so not too late in the cycle.
I’m now down to two plants still going so she’ll get more attention here over the next month.
Sep 16: buds noticeably thicker today. Good bit of flowering lately. Very nice plant.
Sep 18: she’s still doing great. I wish I’d known she was actually a photoperiod because I would have started her earlier and likely manifolded into 16 colas. But even with just one topping, and breaking off one of the two main stems, she is still producing lots of buds. And this week the buds are maturing quickly and putting on weight. Fun times.
Sep 20: decided to give her one last dose of soluble seaweed extract as she’s still 3-4 weeks from being done and it’s not too close to harvest.
Sep 20: this is a very nice plant but it is not particularly fast flowering. She’s now done eight weeks of flowering and likely has four more to go. That puts it into mid-October with very weak sunlight and potentially overnight frosts. Was Auto Overdose, then it was likely Overdose Fast, but after a full 8 weeks of flowering, I think it’s likely just straight up Overdose. Added Overdose to the strain listing.
She’ll now get two of the four UV lights daily to make up for the weak sunlight. And the other plant will be done by end of September so Overdose here will get all the attention pretty soon. Looks like a nice solid harvest in the 250-300g range which is pretty great considering her late start and that she was supposed to be an auto.
Sep 24: cool nights are bringing out some blue and purple.
Sep 25: getting thicker and smellier which is always good. Keeping an eye out for bud rot but no signs so far.
Sep 27: cold nights have added colour but the green had also faded a bit and some leaf tips were showing K deficiency. I gave her a dose of cal-mag during this mornings watering. It was a nice day and also watered in afternoon with potassium silicate and sea weed extract. Still close to 3 weeks needed to finish flowering but likely the last nutes.
Sep 28: Overdose is packing on weight and looking to be quite a big yielder considering I only topped her once and didn’t optimize for it being a photoperiod and not actually an auto.
So far so good and flowering is picking up speed. Sunlight gets very weak into October and potentially frost but with UV lights and putting her in the garage on cold nights, this will finish strongly.
Sep 29: cool and overcast today so I got the LED light out for supplemental light during midday. Minor hassle really but I know the light is quite weak here in October and this supplemental light will likely make a big difference on a late finisher. Watered with cal-mag and potassium this morning. Went to add N and I have some fish fertilizer still…pH dropped in water and I had to use potassium silicate again to get pH back up to proper range. Oh well, she’ll appreciate it all.
Oct 1: gave her another dose of fish fertilizer and potassium silicate this morning.
Oct 3: not sure why but I gave her a partial dose of seaweed extract this morning along with the warmed water. With lower temperatures I’m upping the water temperature a bit. Now using about 28 C water in the morning when it’s still only about 5 C. That seems to help and is easy to do with a cheap kettle to boil water.
Oct 4: she’s completely purple now but flowers are still blooming and no signs of bud rot. Will try to hold off on harvest for another week.
Oct 5: almost done and she is looking spectacular. Nice big hard buds all over the place. Now must decide if I want to take the tops and leave the lower buds for another week or so…maybe tomorrow.
Was supposed to be an auto, and after 70 days of flowering I wouldn’t say she’s fast, so I’m pretty sure this is actually Overdose. Great strain and obviously capable of big final harvests. My guess is that this plant is good for about 300 g of dried buds which is awesome considering the late start and lack of optimization I did during the grow.
Will be harvested within the next two weeks anyway.
Oct 6: harvested 1185 g wet buds which should be good for nearly 300 g dried. 😎 might get 500-600 g wet in Round 2 next week. Close to a pound dried anyway which is amazing. Some of the buds are not fully ripe but I wanted to get the first round in before any bud rot sets in. All tops are dark purple now which also limits their ability to photosynthesize…so, done enough to harvest and take the win.
Oct 7: lower buds are looking frostier than yesterday. 😎
Oct 9: risk of rain today so I did not have UV lights going. Minimal watering lately with smaller plant and cooler temperatures. Still using warmed water to start most days, but not today as I watered yesterday afternoon.
Oct 10: sunny and had UV lights going.
Oct 11: sunny in afternoon but no lights.
Awesome plant that turned out much bigger than expected. I would have preferred the Fast version to finish earlier under stronger sun. Some of the buds were not ready even after 10 weeks of flowering. I might have been able to get another two weeks in but fall is turning into winter. Did hash washing yesterday (Oct 19) and Overdose definitely produced the most extract this year.
Big yielding low hassle plant producing a nice strong smoke and/or lots of resin. What’s not to like? Thanks to Divine Seeds.
Oct 21: 30 g of dried resin wrapped in foil, in an airless sealed bag in a small sealed jar in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. This cold curing is what makes it piatella style hash. First time trying this and I’m looking forward to a nice little Christmas treat. Also did 10 g of Euphoria (plant hermied and seeded) and 20 g of Seasonal Mix which is everything from this year but minus Overdose in this 20 g.
All this is resin caught on 45 micron screen after passing a 120 screen. The 120-160 fraction will be used a bowl topper.
Remaining 30-ish grams of Overdose resin went into the ‘Seasonal Mix’ batch for pressing. Overdose produced a lot of resin and was definitely the big producer this year.
Bubble hash is bubbly, man. 👍
