The smell was initially largely herbal before it was dried. Eucalyptus comes to mind. Once dried, it really does smell like when you peel a mango, with the herbal/eucalyptus-y smell following very closely behind. I can't say much about taste. I've never been one of those people who can tell different smell 'notes' while smoking, so I'm not gonna start making shit up. It smoked and tasted like weed. Solid, dense draw, but smooth as far as I'm concerned. I really enjoy the high. I spontaneously wrote an entire essay while high; the ideas just came flooding. Mustn't lay down on a couch though, because if I do, I can't get up. I say that it might have a paranoia effect, just because I don't trust myself to behave normally around people when high, as I became seriously chatty, and focus/obsess over minute details. I'm pretty sure that's suspicious behavior. During the last 2-3 weeks of flowering, it became apparent that it had phosphorus deficiency, as pointed out by the kind masters here in growdiaries. I upped the P using MKP (a typical bloom booster), but I don't know if it did anything. Maybe it stopped the progression, I don't know. Also during the last half of the flowering, the pH swing was crazy. I'd pH the rez high to 6.5, and it would have dropped to 5.6 by the 2nd day. This plant was eating a lot. I need to figure out a better flowering nute for my next grows.

Well this is my first diary in this site, and I must say, it truly is useful to document everything. Thank you very much for the kind masters on this site who have helped me along the way. I water cured a portion of my harvest (~1/5) as I have always had nothing but good experience with water curing. Started with 901 EC @ the end of the first day, and finished on the 5th day @ 37 EC, then hang to dry for just 2-3 days. Unfortunately I didn't bother to measure the wet weight; I just don't think this tells me anything useful. Final yield after drying and storing everything is as follows: - Tops: 104 g - mids: 54 g - larfs: 29 g - Water cured: 40 g (most of the mids and some tops went here) - Sugar leaf trimmings: 33 g Total with trimmings is 260 g, but I think we should leave that out. Grand total is 227 g. I'm very happy with the numbers of course. I'm also very happy about how frosty the green crack is. I am very sure I got lucky with the genetics I got. I am still looking for that elusive great tasting weed though. There are quite a few things I have learnt from this grow for my next: 1. I went the long-veg way, and I don't think it was the best idea. Fun, but not the best idea. Because the tent was so full, I couldn't trim/defoliating the stems towards the back and so had a lot of mids and larfs. Those were HELL to trim. 2. I need to try better flowering nutrients. The current generic nute I use for veg is perfectly fine. But the flowering nutrient doesn't have enough buffering, I think. The pH swings are too dramatic (~6.5 to 5.6 pH in 2 days? Come on.). 3. I should have started the flowering a week earlier, that way I don't run out of headspace. Unfortunately during this grow I was away on a trip. 4. One layer of SCROG net is not enough. I must add a second layer above to support the heavy flowers. In this grow they toppled because they got too heavy and the stems weren't robust enough to hold them up. I'm gonna take a break from growing for a month or so. I need to do some cleaning and process the harvest to oil/rosin/etc. But once that's done, next stop: DNA Genetic's Blood Orange Sorbet. Stay tuned!

Grow Questions

I've been having this problem with the browning leaves on the bottom. 1. Every time i do DWC from seed, the picture as shown on Week#2 Day#11 happens. Why is that? 2. What do you think is causing the browned lower leaves? Is it calcium deficiency? Or potassium?

That doesn't really look like a calmag problem to me but it doesn't hurt to add calmag if you haven't been. It honestly looks kinda like nute burn.. 1.8 EC is a bit high for plants this age. I've been feeding around 1.3ec and my plants have been loving it. Granted I just grow in coco, not dwc, so that may be something that is a bit different between the two. I also see your ph is at a 6 which is okay but I've personally seen better results in my coco keeping the ph around 5.6-5.8. Either way despite the crappy looking bottom leaf the rest of the plant looks perfect! So it may just be an odd thing that happens and it may not really affect the grow as that'sIve a lower leaf that you would prune anyways.

Iā€™m referring to the last 3 pictures in week 7. Those leaves are near the bottom of the plant, not getting enough light. I thought theyā€™d yellow gracefully before finally crisping up and fall off. But these are dying gruesomely. Is this normal, or a nute issue? Whatā€™re those?

Hey Secondo , the damage is from the plant canabalising itself because it's missing calcium (that's the spots on the leaves) and magnesium (that's the dying parts on the side of the leaves and the yellowing between the veins) . In hydro you do need enrich the solution with cal mag so the plant gets the micro nutrients it needs - so add some micro and the problem will stop spreading and the plant will recover in 10 to 14 days. Hope this helps ! šŸš€

I am currently defoliating my plant gradually. But I worry that I am not doing enough/too much. Could the grand masters here help me by taking a look at my latest entry (Week 13) and see if I'm doing this right? Do I need to further defoliate? Or is this enough?

The top and the bottom are perfectly defoliate. Now concerning the middle it is hard to tell , the pictures doesn't really shows if some leaves are blocking light , however I can spot some leaves that can be remove. Just try to have a maximum light exposure to every bud sites , you can still pluck a leaf or 2 but carefully , just for optimisation.

Dear ganja gurus, please have a look at my diary Wk17 D119. I'm thinking nute lockout due to pH always below 5.8. But any other inputs is most welcome. Nute is 50 ppm epsom, 100ppm CaNO3, 100 ppm MKP, and topped with 7-5-16 A/B to 900ppm.

First and easiest way would be to push the PH up to 6.1 - 6.4. If it doesnĀ“t get worse you did it right.

I dont think you harvested too early, but another week would have been good too. Plants and buds looking great. Your harvest depends on the high you like. I try to harvest by 10% amber trichomes and the rest mostly milky. When trichomes start to turn amber they actually turn from THC to CBN which will provide a more narcotic, couchlock high. Milky trichomes have the highest THC and clear will have a more racey high.

JKT48

@OutForRealbeanCarib, thank you for the reply man. Iā€™m sorry for the awkward reply hours. As I am on the other side of the world. The hydroponic nute we have in our country are very limited, and definitely not geared towards weed. The veg nutrient I have is a local veg A/B mix, at 8-4-12 NPK ratio, with 11% CaO, and 4% MgO. Thatā€™s all it says on the packaging. Iā€™ve tried calling the company, but they arenā€™t willing to divulge any more. I do have access to extra nitrogen fertilizer if needed, as well as 0-10-10 fertilizer. I also have access to other chelates for micro nutes. Right now, I am mixing the nute at 2 ml/L for each A and B. Is this the info you needed?

JKT48week 4
Problem was solved! It turns out, it wasnā€™t a nutrition deficiency. My Optic4 LED grow light was just too close for this young thing. Even though it was already 4 feet away from the canopy. Yep thatā€™s right, 4 feet was too close. So I raised it to 5-1/2 feet and the new growth started growing with a darker green, and the previous leavesā€™ damage did not spread any further. I came to the light distance conclusion because I saw that the fan leaf stalks were purple; but only the top half! The bottom half of the stalk that was hidden from the LEDā€™s Ray was normal green. Now, I donā€™t know if it would do the same if it was nutrition deficiency, but seeing that made me think it was the grow light distance. And it was.

how tall is your tent because this strain grows just about twice as its size.. on top of that, you're growing in a dwc. it'll grow really tall.. get ready to super crop this thing.

@MaryJaneUSA, yes sorry for the misunderstanding. I know how supercropping works. So if I do it to a flowering cola, then what I will have is a crooked cola with a horizontal-ish section at the top right? I wouldnā€™t mind that at all; itā€™s for personal use after all. Itā€™s just Iā€™ve never done supercropping during flowering.

@CRiSPrGrow, so it turns out, the calcium supplement I used before already has magnesium as well; but they were in powder form it turns out, they were meant for soil, and when used in hydroponics they clump together. It forms a white precipitation. Gypsum Iā€™m guessing. So now I dissolve the calcium nitrate separately to the magnesium. So far this week it has worked out well. No new ugly leaf like before. Thank you for your input!

@JKT48, excellent question bro, you're correct it's not directly available it will need to be chelated (with a chelation agent) or like you said use the nitrate.

Did you use any spray? About harvesting readiness I think your plant has a chance and a bit more time for a little more fattening up and getting stronger. Wait until trichomes on a representative middle buds starting to become yellow.
Med_in_Tropic
Med_in_Tropic
@JKT48, yes it is exactly what I meant. I had the same burnt and same brown pattern on my plants when she was in late flowering . And I thought it was from either my foliar spray feeding or tobacco tea. Guess itā€™s just the time that plants pool back nutrients from leaves towards the end of flowering . Good news is youā€™ll have your harvest soon enough . Trichome looks like it can go at least a couple more weeks though.
JKT48
JKT48
@Med_in_Tropic, no, I havent been using any sprays. Not for pests (I have no pest issues), nor do I do any foliar feeding. Is this what you mean?

@ChronicFinest, yep itā€™s confirmed 6ā€ below the net and above the Rez. But I do not recommend doing it that low. Itā€™s so hard and awkward to reach the back of the plant. If I can do over, iā€™d go 1 feet minimum.

@ChronicFinest, for sure I will, when I'm back next week. I'm keeping this really low. probably about 6 inches only.

Day 90 bright yellow new growth only zinc deficiency 100% . you got to look online find a reputable breeder that you trust and download a leaf cue chart . lots of pro breeders have decades of experience and some have leaf cue charts that will show you all possible toxicities and deficiencies . download one print it off stick it up beside your plant . i go by a chart like that its never let me down i act really fast and my planties are really healthy for it . just some advice i think you need . plants can be deficient in many trace minerals you would be amazed like iron zinc calcium manganese magnesium and more . your plant looks good tho . i guess im trying to say a quick refrence guide is key . hope you get an awesome harvest !

@plantie, thanks man! I'll take that piece of wisdom for my next grow. At this point though, I'm already halving the nutes anyways, gonna harvest sometime next week. Really appreciate your looking at my previous weeks!

No, i even didn't know that disease existed. But I found that about it:This fungus spores may stayĀ in the soil over the winter, and attackĀ your plants in the summer. Spores are also easily spread by wind and rain.Immediately (and carefully) remove all affected leaves to get rid of as many spores as possible.Prune any leafy parts of the plant to improve circulation through the plantAvoid getting water on the leaves or laying on top of each other ā€“ you want to avoid moistureMake sure to keep the ground under your plant clean. RakeĀ away all leaves and vegetation.Ā Adding mulch can also help prevent spores from spreading.Keep plants healthy, sicks plants are much more susceptible to leaf septoria than healthy plantsOne way to help prevent this fungus from attacking your plants is to rotate crop sites or move to a new location every year.AĀ broad spectrum fungicideĀ may be effective at stopping the fungus from spreading though they are best used as a preventative.Depending on exactly what's causing your leaf spot,Ā misterĀ (also called a "One-Hand Pressure Sprayer")Ā to spray all the leaves evenly, since neem oil and water can separate easily. Try spraying just a small part of the plant and see how it reacts first before spraying the whole thing.Hope it may help you

@MarcXL, Either way, I chucked the one with the hideous spots. And since last week, I pH-up the rez every day or two. The pH keeps dropping fast. But since then, the leaf problems have at least slowed down, if not stopped entirely. Thanks for your help man!

@JKT48 wrote ā€œ I can't be sure because I can't open the tub anymore due to the scrog net being on there.ā€ Both this prohibitive result, and the extra work to install a scrog, have been deterrents enough for me to never attempt it. And also I believe people just love to tinker with their plants, but I havenā€™t seen a side by side comparison of scrog to free grow that would prove or disprove its touted benefits of better bud and more of it. I just read a piece in Big Buds Mag that explained why itā€™s not a good idea with autos specifically, because they have a pre programmed veg phase we canā€™t alter. Your business trip is a perfect reason to train her for sure! Hereā€™s hoping the brutal session wasnā€™t brutal on you! Your crop looks to be fantastic. Complimenti Best wishes in both business and bud!
JKT48
JKT48
@growdoctordc, yeah, I guess the biggest downside with scrog net is how you really can't move the tub's lid afterwards. But i think next grow what I'll do is modify the lid to have multiple windows that can be opened and closed. We'll see.

Yo i took a look at your leaf pics there in week 7 the darkness tells me there is a buildup of nitrogen the tell tale sighn is the curling of the serated edges and curving of leaf tips . thats untreated nitrogen toxicity i believe . the plant will store excess nitrogen in the big old fan leafs first . un treated they turn really gnarly . if it was a deficiency it would effect newer growth too . i believe bright yellow lower fan leafs is nitrogen deficiency . calcium deficiency starts as light circular dots and is not limited to lower leafs however nitro toxicity will eventually turn colour like that if untreated . they will even resemble potassium deficiency if left long enough . just my opinion tho . looking good in the later weeks bud good growing !!

Day 119 think its got the claw again lol watch the nitrogen input . just my opinion tho . if you keep hitting that problem just lower the nitrogen especially in flowering stage the plant needs p k to bud n is mostly for veg and root growth . looks like a few upper leafs show a k deficiency . just trying to help šŸ˜Š

You have about another 2 weeks left. No plants are perfect, leaves will discolor as they are the end. Slowly reduce your nutrients. In about a week and half later, go ahead and start flushing your DWC for about good 2-3 days. You should be good to harvest.
