keser Short DWC update: My EC value is climbing to 1.2, even though I'm not even using half of the recommended schedule. In my opinion, that's way too high.
The plant is drinking, but not "eating" everything, which is causing the salts to accumulate. Even though it's only my second DWC run, this is a clear sign: the schedule is too strong.
I will definitely keep an eye out for clawing (signs of nutrient burn) and dilute the solution further until the EC stabilizes or slightly decreases.

keser The Lockout, the Measuring Device, and the Most Expensive Lesson of DWC
This week was a tough but incredibly educational ride. The system was heading towards disaster, which hit hard in my absence: a massive nutrient lockout. The trigger was a fatal combination of two things: a (as it turned out) poorly calibrated measuring device and a catastrophic misjudgment on my part right before a week-long absence.
What exactly happened? Before I left, the plant was stable at an EC of 0.8. Mistakenly, I assumed it was particularly hungry and "proactively" gave it a fresh nutrient solution with a much too high EC of 1.2 for the week. A fatal mistake that turned into a disaster due to the measuring error.
The core problem and the "most expensive lesson." This grow has shown me the absolute cardinal sin in DWC: those who skimp on measuring devices or neglect their maintenance and calibration undermine the whole brilliant system. My entire problem stems from a poorly calibrated handheld measuring device.
The DWC lesson is clear: it's not us (or a scheme) that determines the EC, but the plant. "Reading" the nutrient solution (Is the EC rising? Falling? Staying stable?) is the real holy grail in DWC. Only then do we know if the plant is feeding or if we're just poisoning it with nutrients.
Status quo: The lockout was quickly stopped by lowering the EC. The system has now been stabilized, and I'm back to the old, tried-and-true target value of 0.8 that worked perfectly before the fatal water change. After the plant recovered, it was topped.

The light cycle has been switched to 12/12, the flowering phase has begun! In the DWC system, this is always an exciting time because the plants almost aggressively go into the "stretch" due to the direct availability of nutrients.
Since we are working with Plagron here, we have a significant advantage during this transition phase that I would like to explain: Unlike many other nutrient brands, we don't have to open a "flowering bottle" now. The base nutrients (A and B) remain the same as in the growth phase. This is often a relief for beginners, but it's also brilliant from an expert's perspective: As the plant gains massive biomass (stems, leaves) during the stretch, it still requires a lot of nitrogen. Since we simply continue using the base nutrients and only adjust the concentration (EC) to the increasing hunger, nitrogen supply is automatically secured. No deficiency, no yellowing, just lush green.
So my focus right now is less on new fertilizers and more on the additives for the root zone. In DWC, a healthy root system is the heart of it all. I make sure that enzymes and root stimulators do their job to prevent nutrient blockages with the now fluctuating pH levels.
I am now monitoring the water level daily in comparison to the EC value. Since the plants drink extremely a lot during the stretch, I pay close attention to ensure that the nutrient solution doesn't become too "sharp" when the water level drops.
The plants look vital, the roots are white and healthy. The foundation for thick buds is set!
