[This is a beginner's journey to grow a Blue Dream plant outdoors, from seed, for the very first time. I added 3 clones in week 7, and I will include their progress, but each week this journey will feature Foster, the Blue Dream. Thanks for joining me as I learn to grow outdoor cannabis in the beautiful Willamette Valley.] Foster is doing very well this week. At the recommendation of my local organics shop, I've switched my nutrients from Fox Farms (Big Bloom & Grow Big) over to GreenGro's Nature's Pride veg nutrients (info here: http://www.thegreengro.com/product/veg-6-3-3-5/). It's a powder, and I'm feeding 14ml/gal (or, since she's in a 45 gallon pot, 630ml) as a top dressing once/week. I really like the nutrients--it includes mycorrhizae. I will also add a microbial compost tea next Friday at feeding. The Nature's Pride nutrients are a bit more expensive than the Fox Farm nutrients I was working with, but the folks at my organics shop have the plant science background, and its what they use, so I'm going to track the results in the coming weeks. At any rate, It's been a very hot, windy, and humid week in Western Oregon, and she's been drinking nearly 2 gallons/day. New growth looks very healthy, and the sites where I've topped are growing 2 new vibrant colas.

Could this grow have benefitted from feeding nutrients earlier? I was worried about overfeeding and nutrient toxicity early. What is the optimal time to begin feeding nutrients?

Your plants don’t show any deficiencies so why add nutrients? Plants look good mate, nice grow.

I dont run nutrients until the plant seems strong enough to take it usually about a month if you are using a good substrate (i preferably use fox farm ocean it comes with 6-6.7 ph and that gets me through the first month) after the first month i start at 25% manufacture instructions alternate feedings from nutrients to liquid karma (basically at compost tea mix) by month 2 im at full throttle nutrients

Usually after about 4 weeks depending on the pot size is when you can start feeding. Also when using nutes start at least 1/2 the recommended doesage.

Thank you for sharing this diary. And growing is learning, each grow has a lesson for you ( and every Grower). I messed up alot of things, but most time i could save it anyhow, but a few times ia had to give up on a Plant.

@DILLIGAF, much appreciated, many thanks! Do you also adjust for strains & tolerance or is the weak solution something you apply to all seedlings?

@Cannibalgardens, thanks homie! luckily, i live in a state where its legal to grow, so height won't be an issue unless my elderly neighbors decide to complain. 😜

Hey there hope I answered your question! There's no real optimal time for nutrients, i started mine on week 3 or 4 , so did you and neither of us really needed to lol. One thing i will say is if you're considering P/K booster later in flower, you should add it when buds are the size of your thumb. Anything else you need , just drop me a message 👊
DILLIGAF
DILLIGAFcommented5 years ago
@Oregonist, Epsom salts does the same thing mate and is a lot cheaper 😀

Oregonistcommented5 years ago
@CRiSPrGrow, many thanks! You did, indeed, answer my question, and you gave me more to consider, too. Didn't know about cal mag. I'll be on my way to the store today to ask about that and the p/k booster. Much appreciated!! 👽

It’s no failure if you learn something and apply that knowledge and first hand experience to your future grows. I had a favourite plant end up a male, so I fertilised two smaller females with it for seed production. Now I have a bunch of seeds to start a new crop.:)

That stalk is as round as my 6 ft Malawi's. The branches are nice and thick. My Northern Lights stalks are just about like that and they are about 3 - 4 footers. Real pretty plant. Nice to see someone else just letting it grow instead of some form of training.

I start giving worm tea on day 10 but only with half the recommended concentration. Then I repeat again on day 14. On day 21, I would feed with vegging fertilizer as usual. On a cautionary side, feeding depends on nutrients that are already mixed in the soil. If soil is hot, then there are already fertilizer in there. And feeding more fertilizer will burn the plants. From your pic, I don't think you could have done better by feeding her more nutrients. In term of giving extra, room to improve would be; Adding root stimulant with every transplant. Adding sea weed to promote growth and improve disease resistance. Adding (expired) milk and molasses. Your grow shop can explain these. I use expired milk because I am cheap. But milk and molasses works well for me during late flowering phase.
