Bad news, friends. I'm writing this update to let you know that Foster, the Blue Dream, turned out to be a male. 😪Allow me to explain.
First, I want to let you all know that I struggled with posting this update. I was considering erasing the grow diary and pretending like this all never happened. I almost did that to hide my shame. But since I'm an amateur, and since I'm learning (and basically teaching myself) I ultimately decided to post this to normalize failure and mistakes.
Failure is, in my humble opinion, the most important aspect of learning. I made a big mistake in misidentifying the sex of this plant. It really sucks, and I'm really embarrassed. I will harvest zero flower from the blue dream--complete failure. But I learned a very good lesson. In fact, I learned so much about cannabis, about growing cannabis. And I want others out there to feel okay if they fail.
So I'm posting this update, and I'm keeping this diary up, as a message to other amateur growers out there: its okay to fuck up. I really fucked up. We will learn. I didn't grow an award-winning plant. But that's okay! And next summer, you bet your ass I will grow some dank ass flower (ha, I'll be ordering feminized seeds this time 😂).
So, my friends, thanks for following this journal, and thanks for all the support. If you've provided answers to my questions or tips for growing: i extend a sincere "thanks." I love being a part of an online community that is supportive of noobs like me.
Thanks for following, even if it did ultimately end in failure!
Cheers.
Could this grow have benefitted from feeding nutrients earlier? I was worried about overfeeding and nutrient toxicity early. What is the optimal time to begin feeding nutrients?
I dont run nutrients until the plant seems strong enough to take it usually about a month if you are using a good substrate (i preferably use fox farm ocean it comes with 6-6.7 ph and that gets me through the first month) after the first month i start at 25% manufacture instructions alternate feedings from nutrients to liquid karma (basically at compost tea mix) by month 2 im at full throttle nutrients
Thank you for sharing this diary. And growing is learning, each grow has a lesson for you ( and every Grower). I messed up alot of things, but most time i could save it anyhow, but a few times ia had to give up on a Plant.

Beautiful looking girl she is growing strong and tall love the structure of this one she will be tall .. Is height an issue u gotta limit because of nieghbours lol
@Cannibalgardens, thanks homie! luckily, i live in a state where its legal to grow, so height won't be an issue unless my elderly neighbors decide to complain. 😜
@Oregonist, im out pendelton way it came out of nowhere but i had been recording the lightning show from the deck so thankfully i got the three in danger undercover before any damage
Hey there hope I answered your question! There's no real optimal time for nutrients, i started mine on week 3 or 4 , so did you and neither of us really needed to lol. One thing i will say is if you're considering P/K booster later in flower, you should add it when buds are the size of your thumb. Anything else you need , just drop me a message 👊
@CRiSPrGrow, many thanks! You did, indeed, answer my question, and you gave me more to consider, too. Didn't know about cal mag. I'll be on my way to the store today to ask about that and the p/k booster. Much appreciated!! 👽
It’s no failure if you learn something and apply that knowledge and first hand experience to your future grows. I had a favourite plant end up a male, so I fertilised two smaller females with it for seed production. Now I have a bunch of seeds to start a new crop.:)
I hope I was able to help you and provide the answer to the grow question from a few weeks ago Best of luck @Oregonist They look fantastic I can't wait to see your next update
That stalk is as round as my 6 ft Malawi's. The branches are nice and thick. My Northern Lights stalks are just about like that and they are about 3 - 4 footers. Real pretty plant. Nice to see someone else just letting it grow instead of some form of training.
I start giving worm tea on day 10 but only with half the recommended concentration. Then I repeat again on day 14. On day 21, I would feed with vegging fertilizer as usual.
On a cautionary side, feeding depends on nutrients that are already mixed in the soil. If soil is hot, then there are already fertilizer in there. And feeding more fertilizer will burn the plants. From your pic, I don't think you could have done better by feeding her more nutrients.
In term of giving extra, room to improve would be;
Adding root stimulant with every transplant.
Adding sea weed to promote growth and improve disease resistance.
Adding (expired) milk and molasses. Your grow shop can explain these.
I use expired milk because I am cheap. But milk and molasses works well for me during late flowering phase.
Sep 27th is the first day of 12/12 in our neck of the woods im not expecting preflower until end of August but ill take it earlier for sure hoping for an "indian summer"
@EastOregonGrower, yeah, i'm hoping for a hot, late summer. last year the rain started, slowly, in mid october. it looks like mine are going into pre-flower. i'll post some pics.
You are funny dude. Tell me, what would you teach to yourself on the past about identifying sex on cann?
Wish a great next grow!!! Have a Shroom!! !! 11!1 🙌
