Zengrower First time growing a Haze after 5 years 🚀
There’s not much to see yet above the soil, but this round already feels special.
For the first time in five years of growing, I decided to go for a true Haze variety: Ice Cream Haze by Dutch Passion. And honestly, that’s a bit out of character for me.
I’ve always avoided Haze genetics for two reasons. First of all, my grow space is limited in height. Hazes are known for stretching enthusiastically once flowering kicks in, and in a compact setup that can quickly become a challenge. Secondly, Haze strains are easy to find in Dutch coffeeshops. I usually like to grow something you can’t just buy around the corner — that exclusive, homegrown-only experience has always been part of the fun.
But at the same time… I don’t want to deny myself a proper Haze experience forever.
Why Ice Cream Haze?
Ice Cream Haze is a feminized photoperiod strain from Dutch Passion, combining classic Haze genetics with modern breeding stability and high resin production. According to the breeder, this strain is known for:
A strong, uplifting and energetic cerebral high
Complex terpene profile with sweet, creamy, citrus and spicy Haze notes
Heavy resin production (great bag appeal)
XL yields under good conditions
Flowering time around 8–10 weeks
What really caught my attention is the description of the effect. A fast-onset, euphoric and creative head high — exactly what I’ve been gravitating towards in my recent grows. My last few rounds leaned more toward active, mind-expanding effects rather than heavy couchlock indicas, and I absolutely loved how that boosted my creativity and focus.
If Ice Cream Haze delivers what is promised, this could be a perfect match for where I’m at right now.
Germination & Setup
The seed is germinatingin the Root!T plug and is ready to settle into her first days in soil. At this stage there’s little more than small seedlings preparing to reach for the light — but that’s where every good grow story begins.
Given the Haze genetics, I’ll be paying close attention to:
- Stretch management (not too much substrate, 7L max)
- Early structure training
- Light intensity during early veg
- Timing the flip carefully
With limited vertical space, this grow will require some strategy. But that’s part of the fun — finding the balance between giving a Haze enough room to express itself while keeping things under control in a compact environment.
For now, we wait. Tiny leaves and roots in the ground in the next few days. Potentially towering, resin-dripping colas in a few months.
After five years, it’s time to see what a real Haze can do in the Minigrow.

Zengrower 🍦 Ice Cream Haze – From cautious start to vertical takeoff
This week started quietly… and ended with fireworks.
It took a little patience before the seed fully opened and pushed her first leaves above the soil. For a moment I wondered if she was taking her time to prepare something special underground. But once those tiny cotyledons unfolded, everything changed.
She took off like a rocket.
Within days she stretched upward with surprising speed. For a brief moment I was honestly concerned she might topple over from that rapid early stretch. But this lady clearly knows what she’s doing 😉 Despite being taller than average for such a young seedling, she’s standing perfectly upright — proud and steady — showing off surprisingly large fan leaves for this stage.
That early vigor says a lot.
Managing the Haze Energy
This is exactly why I decided to use a relatively limited amount of substrate again in the Minigrow. With this kind of vitality, giving her too much root space too early might turn this into a vertical jungle. Ice Cream Haze already has that classic Haze stretch in her DNA, and judging from this first week, she’s not planning to stay compact on her own.
Controlled environment, controlled roots, controlled height — that’s the strategy.
But I have to say, I love seeing this kind of life force so early on. There’s something powerful about a plant that clearly wants to grow.
Preventive Measures
As always, the soil was treated preventively with beneficial nematodes. This particular substrate is known to be full of fungus gnat larvae, and I prefer to handle that before it becomes visible above the surface. With the nematodes active below the soil line, I don’t expect any real issues from rouwvliegjes this round.
For now, there isn’t much more to report. No deficiencies, no stress signals — just strong upward momentum.
If this first week is any indication of what’s coming, I may have to keep a close eye on this Haze lady. She’s clearly not here to grow small.
Let’s see what week two brings.

Zengrower Patience pays off
One thing I noticed after sharing the previous update and photo: some growers are very quick to shout “Top her!” 😉
I understand the instinct. With that early stretch and Haze genetics in the background, many growers immediately think about controlling height. But over the course of this week the plant made it very clear that she had everything under control.
Instead of continuing to stretch, she settled into a beautifully compact structure. The internodes stayed short, the stem thickened nicely, and she started producing large, healthy fan leaves that give the plant a strong and balanced appearance.
So for now: no topping needed.
Strong Structure
What impressed me most this week was the combination of vigor and stability. The stem has become noticeably thicker, supporting the plant perfectly, and the overall structure is compact and sturdy. Exactly what you hope to see in a young plant that will eventually carry Haze genetics into flowering.
Of course, with a Haze strain some stretch during flowering is inevitable. But judging by how she’s developing right now, she seems perfectly capable of keeping her structure under control for the moment.
And honestly, I prefer this approach: let the plant show its natural growth pattern first before intervening.
Flipping the Minigrow
At the end of week two I decided it was time to flip the Minigrow to a 12/12 light schedule.
With the limited vertical space in this setup, it’s always a balancing act. You want the plant to build enough structure before flowering, but you also don’t want to give a Haze too much time to turn into a skyscraper.
Right now she’s short, sturdy, and full of energy — exactly the moment where a flowering flip makes sense in a compact grow environment.
Now the real fun begins. If the genetics follow their Haze heritage, the coming weeks should reveal how much stretch this lady still has in store.
Let’s see how she responds to the flip ✌️☘️

Zengrower After switching the Minigrow to a 12/12 light schedule at the end of week two, I expected the plant to start showing the first signs of the classic Haze stretch. But interestingly enough, that hasn’t really happened yet.
Instead, she simply continued the same growth pattern she showed during week two.
The structure remains compact and sturdy, with short internodes and a very solid stem that keeps thickening nicely. The fan leaves are becoming impressively large and healthy, giving the plant that strong, vigorous look that always makes a grower smile.
So far this Ice Cream Haze seems perfectly comfortable in the Minigrow.
No Rush to Stretch
With Haze genetics you normally expect a noticeable stretch once flowering begins. That may still happen of course, but for now the plant is behaving beautifully — staying relatively short while building a strong structure.
Personally I’m very happy with that development. In a grow space with limited height, a plant that first focuses on strength and leaf development before stretching is exactly what you hope for.
Simple Feeding
The feeding schedule this round is deliberately very simple.
The soil was prepared from the start with BioTabs, which slowly provide most of the nutrients the plant needs. Because of that, I’m not adding much extra during watering.
At the moment the plant only receives water with Sugar Royal. The BioTabs in the soil take care of the base nutrition, while Sugar Royal supports the plant’s metabolic processes and later on helps stimulate terpene and resin production.
It’s a very relaxed way of growing: let the soil biology do the heavy lifting.
For now everything looks healthy and balanced. No deficiencies, no stress signals — just steady development and a plant that clearly enjoys her environment.
The big question now is when the Haze genetics will decide it’s time to stretch.
But for the moment, this Ice Cream lady is taking things nice and steady.

Zengrower This week marked an important transition: the first pistils have appeared, confirming that this lady has officially entered the flowering stage.
It’s always a satisfying moment — that clear signal that all the preparation in the vegetative phase is paying off.
Building a Strong Foundation
To make sure she has enough nutrients available throughout the flowering phase, I added an extra BioTab to the soil this week. That should provide a solid nutritional base all the way until the end of the grow.
Later in flowering I’ll support her a bit more with Power Buds and Green Sensation, but that’s mainly for that final boost in bud development and resin production. For now, I prefer to keep things simple and let the soil biology do its work.
Still Surprisingly Compact
What continues to amaze me is how compact this Ice Cream Haze remains.
Of course she’s growing and slowly gaining height, but the internodes are still nice and tight, which is exactly what I was hoping for in this limited grow space. So far she’s behaving much more controlled than you might expect from a Haze.
Another thing that really stands out are the large fan leaves. Compared to other plants I’ve grown in the Minigrow, this one definitely leans toward the larger side. They act like perfect solar panels, efficiently capturing the light and converting it into strong, healthy growth.
At this stage, everything feels balanced: structure, nutrition, and development are all right where they should be.

Zengrower This week it became unmistakably clear: the Ice Cream Haze is now fully in flowering mode.
The main cola is already filling up nicely with pistils, and the side branches are actively pushing upward, trying to find their place above the large fan leaves.
Letting the Plant Do Its Thing
I’m being very careful with defoliation at this stage.
Even though the large leaves can sometimes block lower growth, I’ve decided not to remove them for now. Defoliating too early in flowering can trigger extra stretch, and that’s something I want to avoid in this setup.
So for now, it’s all about observation and restraint — letting the plant manage its own energy distribution.
Stretch Phase Begins
By the end of week five, the plant has reached about half of the available height in the Minigrow.
She has started to stretch a bit more now, which is completely normal for this phase. What I really like, though, is that the internode spacing remains relatively compact. If she continues like this, she should end up fitting the space almost perfectly.
It’s a nice balance: enough stretch to build proper flower sites, but still controlled enough to stay within the limits of the grow.
At this point, everything is developing exactly how I hoped — maybe even better.
Let’s see how far she wants to reach in the coming weeks.

Zengrower This week marks the point where things really start to come together.
The buds are now clearly forming, and you can see the plant shifting her energy from vertical growth into flower production. What were once just pistils are now beginning to stack into recognizable bud sites.
🚀 Stretch Under Control
Although the plant did gain quite a bit of height over the past period, the stretch now seems to be slowing down significantly.
At this point, she has filled a large portion of the vertical space, but I still have about a quarter of the grow height left, which is exactly where I hoped she would end up. For a Haze, this feels like a very controlled and manageable stretch.
Even better: the internodes are still relatively compact, which should translate into nicely stacked buds in the coming weeks.
So far, she’s threading the needle perfectly between Haze vigor and Minigrow limitations.
Gentle Adjustments
I made a very light intervention this week by removing two large fan leaves that were blocking light to the lower bud sites.
Nothing aggressive — just a small adjustment to improve light penetration.
I’m being very careful here. In this phase, the plant is fully focused on flowering, and unnecessary stress can still influence stretch or slow down development. So the approach is minimal and intentional: only touch what truly needs to be adjusted.
Flower Development Begins
With the structure now largely set and the stretch tapering off, the focus is shifting fully toward bud development.
The coming weeks should be all about:
Bud stacking
Resin production
Aroma development
If she continues like this, this Ice Cream Haze is shaping up to be a very well-balanced plant — strong, controlled, and full of potential.
Let’s see how she starts building her flowers from here.

Zengrower This week I made a deliberate decision to step in and guide the plant a bit more actively.
Even though the stretch has almost completely come to a stop, I noticed that the main cola itself still needed space to properly develop. Rather than letting her grow into the limits of the Minigrow, I decided to supercrop the main top.
Controlling the Final Height
One of the advantages of the Minigrow is that plants can get quite close to the diffuser plate without burning. But still — I prefer not to push it that far.
Supercropping felt like the right move here:
not to stop growth, but to redirect it and create a bit more breathing room for the main cola.
It’s always a bit of a moment when you bend that top over… but this plant handled it beautifully.
A Strong, Impressive Structure
At this stage, the plant is starting to look truly impressive.
The main stem is thick and solid, clearly capable of supporting serious bud weight in the coming weeks. It’s one of those moments where you can already tell this plant is built to carry a heavy harvest.
The side branches have now also stopped stretching, which creates a very stable and balanced structure across the canopy.
Light Defoliation
With the stretch behind us, I took the opportunity to do a careful and minimal defoliation.
Some of the lower bud sites were growing quite close to the main stem and were being shaded by the large fan leaves. By selectively removing a few leaves, I’ve opened up the structure a bit, allowing more light and airflow to reach those lower flowers.
Nothing excessive — just enough to support better development without introducing unnecessary stress.
Watering Rhythm
Another thing I’m noticing now is that she’s starting to drink more each day.
Because the pot is relatively small and likely packed with roots by now, I have to water in stages. If I pour too much at once, the water doesn’t get absorbed fast enough and starts to overflow.
So it’s a bit of a slower process:
water, wait, let it settle… and repeat.
A small pot, but clearly a very active root system.

Zengrower The calm before the swell
This week feels… different.
After the steady development of the past weeks, it almost seems like the plant has taken a small step back — not in a negative way, but more like a pause. As if she’s gathering strength for what’s about to come next.
A quiet week on the surface.
But underneath, something is clearly building.
Preparing for the Final Push
Growth has slowed down compared to previous weeks. The stretch is fully over, and there are no big visible changes day by day. Instead, the plant feels like it’s shifting internally — preparing for that final phase where buds really start to bulk up.
That moment where everything suddenly accelerates.
By the end of the week, the main cola is already starting to take on serious shape. It’s no longer just a collection of pistils — it’s becoming a proper top, with structure and presence.
You can tell she’s getting ready to go all in.
Daily Bending Ritual
The main cola still has a strong will of its own.
Even after last week’s supercrop, she keeps trying to straighten back up toward the light. So every day, I gently guide her back down again, maintaining that horizontal position.
Not the kindest treatment, perhaps… 😉
But I know from experience:
once that top starts putting on real weight, she’ll be grateful for the extra space and better light distribution.
Sometimes you have to be a bit strict to get the best result.
Strong and Ready
The overall structure remains exactly where I want it:
Thick, supportive main stem
Stable side branches
Even canopy with good light exposure
Everything feels balanced and under control.
No stress signals, no deficiencies — just a plant that looks strong, healthy, and ready.

Zengrower This week I made a small but important decision to intervene.
The main cola had grown all the way up to the diffuser plate. While the Minigrow can handle plants getting quite close to the light without burning, this was starting to feel a bit too tight — especially with the buds still needing to swell.
Rather than taking risks, I decided to trim the very top of the main cola.
A Necessary Adjustment
The top section that I removed already looked somewhat dried out and, in my opinion, wasn’t going to develop into high-quality, resin-rich flower anyway. So it felt like the right call to sacrifice a small part in order to protect the rest.
Fortunately, only a small piece needed to be removed.
The main cola now has enough space again to properly finish flowering.
Sometimes less really is more.
Aroma Explosion
One thing that is becoming impossible to ignore: the smell.
With each passing day, the aroma is getting stronger and more pronounced. At this stage, it’s a sharp, penetrating citrus scent with a clear diesel edge. Very expressive, very present — the kind of smell that immediately fills the room.
Interestingly, I’m not picking up much of the sweet or creamy notes yet. But that doesn’t surprise me. Those softer terpene layers often reveal themselves later — especially after drying and curing.
Frosty Development
The trichome production on this plant is definitely above average.
The buds are already covered in a thick layer of sticky crystals, even though she still has a few weeks to go. It’s one of those signs that you know you’re working with quality genetics.
Everything is pointing in the right direction now.

Zengrower Week ten has been a quieter one in terms of interventions, but visually things are progressing exactly as you’d hope at this stage.
The buds are starting to swell nicely, gaining mass and density across the plant. It’s no longer just about structure — now it’s about filling out and stacking weight.
Building Towards the Finish
Day by day, the flowers are becoming more substantial. The main cola, now with enough space again, is developing without restriction, and the side buds are following along beautifully.
Everything feels steady and on track.
Aroma Getting Stronger
The smell continues to intensify.
That sharp citrus-diesel profile is becoming even more dominant, filling the grow space more quickly and lingering longer. It’s one of those stages where simply opening the tent gives you an immediate impression of what’s coming.
At this point, it’s mostly about patience:
Letting the buds fully swell
Watching trichomes develop
Waiting for the plant to reach peak maturity
The Ice Cream Haze is clearly entering her final phase now.
The finish line is getting closer. 🍦✨
Outstanding vigor, impressive resin production, excellent daytime effects, and a harvest that exceeded all expectations. A worthy first Haze experience after five years of growing.

Zengrower 👻👻👻 The accidental darkness experiment 👻👻👻
Every grow has its own story.
Sometimes you carefully plan everything from start to finish. And sometimes... you accidentally conduct an experiment.
This Ice Cream Haze ended up being a little bit of both.
An Unexpected Test
The Minigrow has a built-in flowering timer, which in this case was set to 70 days. What I hadn't realized was that those 70 days had already passed.
As a result, the plant spent almost seven full days in complete darkness before I noticed what had happened.
Not exactly part of the original grow plan.
When I discovered my mistake, I restarted the flowering schedule and gave the plant another five days to recover and finish properly.
What surprised me most was her response.
Despite the stress, she didn't throw any nanners, didn't show signs of turning hermaphrodite, and didn't seem overly affected by the experience. She simply continued flowering as if nothing had happened.
I certainly wouldn't recommend this as a growing technique, but it did accidentally demonstrate how resilient these genetics can be.
? Harvest Day
Five days after the unexpected dark period, the trichomes were looking exactly where I wanted them:
Beautifully milky
Well developed
Mature and ready for harvest
So it was finally time.
During harvest and trimming, the aroma was absolutely overwhelming. The smell filled the room almost immediately and made the final drying period feel much longer than it actually was.
At that point, I couldn't wait to find out how she would taste.
✂️ Drying & Trimming
After about ten days of drying, the flowers were ready for their final trim and first test session.
One thing that stood out immediately was the amount of resin on the sugar leaves. Normally, many growers trim aggressively for maximum bag appeal.
I went the opposite direction.
Because I primarily consume my flowers through a vaporizer, I care far more about preserving trichomes than creating perfectly sculpted buds. A sugar leaf covered in resin contains plenty of goodness, so I decided to leave more material on the flowers and prioritize quality over appearance.
No beauty contest here.
Just maximizing the good stuff.
Aroma & Flavor
The aroma during flowering had been dominated by a sharp citrus profile with a noticeable diesel edge.
But once again, Dutch Passion managed to surprise me.
What I smelled while growing wasn't exactly what I tasted while vaping.
The vapor turned out to be remarkably smooth and creamy, with soft sweet fruity undertones underneath. The smoke-free vapor was gentle on the throat and much more refined than I expected based on the sharp flowering aroma.
It's one of those strains where the curing process will likely reveal even more complexity over time.
Effects
The effect is exactly what I have been looking for lately.
Rather than a heavy couch-lock experience, Ice Cream Haze delivers an uplifting, social and creative high.
It's the kind of strain that makes you want to:
Work on creative projects
Have conversations
Go outside
Stay productive
The mental effect is energetic without feeling overwhelming, making it an excellent daytime or early evening variety.
Exactly my kind of medicine.
Final Yield
And finally, the number every grower wants to know.
After drying and trimming, the final harvest came in at:
🌱 83 grams dry
For my Minigrow setup, that's a fantastic result.
In fact, it's more than double the yield of my previous run, making this my most successful Minigrow harvest so far.
I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
This grow once again proves that you don't need a huge grow room to produce high-quality cannabis. With a bit of creativity, patience, and persistence, even the smallest spaces can deliver surprisingly large harvests.
And judging by the flavor, effects, and yield, Ice Cream Haze has earned a very respectable place in my personal grow history.
