Tower84 🌱 Week 1 – Germination Success (Sunviva & Primabella) The tomato season has officially started! Today the first seedlings of my outdoor project emerged and the germination rate looks fantastic. Both varieties come from Bobby Seeds and were selected specifically for their strong resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans), which is always a big challenge in outdoor tomato growing. Germination results: •Sunviva: 6/6 seeds germinated •Primabella: 5/6 seeds germinated That’s an almost perfect start. Sunviva is a beautiful yellow cocktail tomato developed in the ecological outdoor tomato breeding project at the University of Göttingen. It produces small, bright yellow fruits of about 20 g with a sweet, fruity aroma and is known for its excellent resistance to late blight and brown rot. The plants are vigorous, indeterminate and can grow up to around 2 m or more while producing long trusses of juicy tomatoes throughout the season. Primabella is essentially the red “sister variety” of Sunviva. It produces bright red cherry tomatoes with a sweet and juicy flavor and was also bred specifically for outdoor cultivation with very high resistance to late blight. This makes it one of the most reliable varieties for rainy or humid climates. Both varieties were developed with the goal of making outdoor tomato growing easier and more resilient, especially without chemical plant protection. The seedlings have just broken through the soil and will now spend the next days under good light to avoid stretching. If everything continues like this, we should see the first true leaves very soon. This season will be a great comparison between the yellow Sunviva and the red Primabella — both famous for their resilience in outdoor gardens. Excited to see how they develop in the coming weeks! 🍅🌱

Tower84 Week 1 – A Strong Start 🌱 The journey with the tomato seedlings has officially begun and the first week is looking very promising. The environment is dialed in with a VPD around 0.8, creating a gentle and stable climate for young plants to establish their roots. Lighting is provided by a SANlight running on level 1, positioned 40 cm above the canopy, giving approximately 200 PPFD. This moderate light intensity should keep the seedlings compact while encouraging healthy early development. Yesterday I transplanted (pricked out) the seedlings into larger pots. The roots were already forming nicely and the transplant went smoothly without any visible stress so far. They seem to have settled in well and are already pointing their leaves towards the light again. At this stage the focus is not on rapid growth but on building a strong root system and a solid foundation for the weeks to come. The cotyledons look fresh and green, and the first true leaves are beginning to develop, which is always a beautiful moment in the early stages. For now the plan is simple: stable environment, gentle light, and patience. The real growth should start soon. Happy growing everyone! 🍅🌱

Tower84 Week 2 – Primabella & Sunviva 🍅 The second week is complete and the tomatoes are developing nicely. Both Primabella and Sunviva are showing steady, compact growth with healthy green leaves and good structure after transplanting. Environment is currently stable at around 19°C with ~60% humidity. Light intensity is set to ~300 PPFD (Stage 2) at a distance of 40 cm, which seems to keep them short and sturdy without any stretching. I’m watering with plain water supplemented with 2 ml/L BioBizz Root Juice to support root development. So far, the plants are responding well and establishing themselves in their new pots. In the tent, there’s also some diversity: - Lettuce in the center - Snack peppers in the bottom right - Physalis in the top right The airflow is good, and the plants are starting to push new growth daily. No signs of deficiencies so far. Overall: solid progress for week two 👍

Tower84 Week 3 – Tomato Grow (Primabella & Sunviva) 🍅🌱 This week I made a selection and reduced the number of plants from 11 down to 6. I ran into a bit of stress, especially with the Sunviva plants. Some leaves started curling and showed slight damage – most likely caused by too much direct airflow from the fan (wind stress). Adjustments made: - Fan reduced from level 2 → level 1 - Fan raised higher to avoid direct airflow on the leaves - Plant positions rearranged for more even airflow Since then, the plants seem to stabilize. New growth is coming in healthier, and I expect them to bounce back fully. Environment & Setup: - Light: SANlight still running at level 2 - Watering: approx. every 3 days - Amount: ~250 ml per plant - Nutrients: water + BioBizz Root Juice Overall, growth is still solid. Structure is getting stronger and the plants are starting to fill out nicely. The stress slowed them down a bit, but nothing major – should be back on track quickly. Looking forward to week 4 🌿

Tower84 Week 4 Update – Sunviva & Primabella Tomatoes 🍅 The girls are officially entering week 4, and the differences between the two varieties are becoming more and more visible. The three plants in the back (Sunviva) are now around 30 cm tall and clearly focused on vertical growth. They’re stretching nicely with strong main stems and a more classic upward structure. In contrast, the three plants in the front (Primabella) are about 15 cm tall but growing much bushier and wider. Their compact structure is already showing, with dense foliage and strong lateral development. Today I did some light maintenance: - Removed side shoots (pruning/suckering) - Watered all six plants with a total of 1.5 L - pH-adjusted water to 6.5 - Added BioBizz Root Juice at 2 ml/L - Supplemented with 100 mg/L Epsom salt Overall, development looks healthy and vigorous. The structural differences between the strains are really exciting to watch — Sunviva reaching for the sky while Primabella is building a solid, bushy base. Looking forward to how they progress in the coming weeks 🌱

Tower84 Week 5 – Primabella & Sunviva 🍅 Week 5 and things are moving forward nicely overall 🙌 I transplanted two Primabella and two Sunviva into 2L pots using Neudorff tomato & vegetable soil. During transplant, I dusted the rootballs with Plant Success Great White to support root development – always like to give them a strong start 💪 The 0.5L pots were completely rootbound, so yeah… lesson learned 😄 Next season I’ll definitely start a bit later and go straight into larger pots. Every grow teaches you something. Growth-wise there’s already a noticeable difference between the strains: The Sunviva are leading the way at around 40 cm and already showing their first flowers 🌼 The Primabella are a bit more compact and sturdy, sitting at around 30 cm with no flowers yet – but looking very healthy and strong. Due to space limitations, I moved the main plants to the window now. Not ideal, but they’re doing fine so far. I also had to cull one plant of each strain because of space. Instead of tossing them, I decided to run a little experiment: I planted them outside in 30L pots with Neudorff tomato soil and added a layer of biofibre mulch. We’ve had relatively mild days, but nights dropped to around 5°C, which is definitely on the edge. Since these were extras anyway, I wanted to see how the strains handle colder conditions early on. So far they’re holding up surprisingly okay – let’s see how they perform over the next days 👀

The two Pimabella and two Sunviva plants are holding up really well despite their current pot situation 💪🔥 With only 2 liters of soil, they’re clearly starting to outgrow their space – they definitely need a bigger root zone soon ?➡️🌳 Still, all four plants look surprisingly healthy and vigorous 🌿✨ The foliage is strong and green, structure is solid, and overall they seem to be doing great. Even better: the first fruits are already forming 🍅😍 – a clear sign they’re feeling good despite the limitations. They’re already spending their days outside ☀️🌬️, which helps them acclimate and build resilience for outdoor conditions. Now it’s just a matter of holding on until mid-May ⏳ – then they can finally move into their 30L pots and really take off 🚀🌱 Conclusion: Slightly root-bound, but still healthy, strong plants with great moment

Tower84 The first Sunviva tomatoes are ripe and will be harvested today. The plants growing in Sonnerde vegetable soil have established themselves better so far than those in Neudorff vegetable soil. However, the Neudorff plants may simply need a little more time to settle in and catch up. 🍅🌱

Tower84 Weekly Update This week showed a very noticeable difference between the two Primabella tomatoes. The plant on the right is growing in Sonnerde vegetable soil, while the one on the left is planted in Neudorff tomato soil. Unfortunately, I only had enough Sonnerde left for one plant, so the other three tomatoes ended up in the Neudorff mix. The difference in vigor and overall health is quite striking. The Sonnerde plant has established itself much better and shows stronger growth, while the plants in the Neudorff soil are clearly struggling and lagging behind. I contacted Neudorff about the issue, and they suggested that the soil may have been stored for too long at the garden center. As compensation, they offered to send me a bottle of tomato fertilizer free of charge. While I appreciate the gesture, I am still quite disappointed, especially considering that this was one of the more premium potting soils available at the store. For now, I will continue to monitor the plants and hope that the Neudorff tomatoes can recover and catch up over the coming weeks. 🍅🌱

@Tower84, this is my 3rd year trying to grow weed and food. Not always successful. It has been a learning experience, same for weed. My current tomato in the tent has been great (see my NYC Diesel diary).

@Natrona, Growing different plants is challeging because of different needs. I‘m just at the beginning of my Journey, but starting with other crops is very funny. I have only a small garden, but this year the space will be crowded with different crops 😅 Watering in summer time outdoor will be more time consuming as last year 😅

I also grow tomatoes (Tiny Tim Dwarf) in my tent with cannabis. I did have a terrible whitefly infestation, almost exclusive to the tomatoes. Going forward I have a 2nd & 3rd tent for other plants.

@JVKdopegrow, Maybe this could help you: „Predatory mites are very effective in controlling whiteflies. The generalist predatory mites Amblyseius swirskii (Swirski's mite), Amblydromalus limonicus (Limonica mite), and Transeius montdorensis (Montdo mite) can be used to control whiteflies.“ Source: Homepage Koppert

Frisch jedoch angenehm. Habe wieder eine im diesjährigen Anbau.

@Tower84, Primabella & Vivagrande (Fleischtomate), die klappen outdoor. Frühes anziehen ist die Lösung.
