Finally! My Optic 8+ has arrived!!! Got the new tent set up with the auto-pot system, couple good fans, intake, exhaust, humidifier, and air pumps for the special way I've set up my auto pots (take a look at the pictures and their comments). I'm soooooooo excited to try out this new set up! I happened to have four vegging CBD Cannatonic gals from project overgrow seeds ready (a bit past ready, really) for transplanting, so in they went! Bertha, Linda, Freida, and Frannie are all set for their cycle in my new 4x4 set up! 😁 This week, it will be plain RO water for these ladies, as they adjust to their new home and soil. Please take a look and leave any comments or suggestions you may have for me. Happy growing everyone!

I'm very happy with the growth, so far! The air stone seems to be doing a nice job, along with the custom layered medium - I'm getting better growth than I have with my old set up, with the stems thickening up nicely. I did a bit of low stress training, and scrogging. As you can see in the pictures, Frannie is growing a bit differently, this is because she somehow topped her self and made three primary's before they all reached the net, her stem growth has lagged behind the others a bit, but her spread in the canopy is much wider. Nutrients are now in effect. As this is the first time I'm using the auto-pot system, I don't really know what to expect. I think the TDS seems high; however, the water was at 5 TDS before adding nutrients at the suggested concentration. This is one of the reasons I'm running with free genetics, if I screw up the first run with the new equipment, no harm no fowl, and the gods may rest easy knowing that no prodigal cultivars went to waste. 😇 To battle the heat, I've been rotating movie theater cups of ice close to the intake filters, and in the tents, and running my lights at night to avoid temperature spikes in the afternoon heat of the day. It's working quite well, and I haven't had to air condition at all. What a great first week! I'm excited for this grow, and future grows with this set up 🙏 Update : After doing some more research in to my light fixture, I lifted it to 30" above canopy and reduced the power output to about 75%. This has greatly improved the VPD in the grow tent, as humidity is staying up at 60% and the temperature is staying at 27C with the light on, putting VPD right around 1.0-1.03 during the light cycle, perfect for veg. I've ordered a large humidifier for the room the grow tents are in, to try and improve the humidity of the air coming in to the tents, because Alberta is just so damn dry.

Thanks for taking a look! This week, I've made more adjustments to the fan arrangement and managed to get my big fan up right and oscillating (I used a microphone stand shelf attachment, worked like a charm!). The humidity has stayed up at 60%, but I have to refill the humidifier twice a day to make it happen, worth it though, as the plants have been showing much healthier new growth. I haven't added any nutrient solution, as there is still around 2.5 gallons left in the tank from the last fill, I've adjusted the recorded water intake to reflect last weeks consumption. Frannie is still looking the best, and has seemed to top her self again, Freida and Linda are growing around the same rate, and Bertha has been growing fatter in stalk rather than spreading out, making it harder to train her, but she's coming along as well. This new set up has given me many new learning opportunities, and I'm glad to say the plants keep looking better and better. Please let me know if you see anything I'm missing, or if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions. Thanks! 🙏

I've been having trouble keeping the temperature down in my tents, and I'm wondering what everyones tips and tricks are for extra cooling without adding more to the power draw. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! 🙏

This is every growers nemesis. Open all your vents at the bottom of your tent. Also I've noticed you have your power bar along with other power supplies that you could move outside of the tent. Try it out and I guarantee you'll shed at least 1 deg. The only way to really reduce the temps considering you are already running an inline fan is to intrude AC to the tent. You can make a cooler packed with ice a homemade AC system but you need a fan to push that cold air in the tent there after so there is no easy solution my friend! We are all dealing with the same issues during the summer if you do not want to add with the additional power draw. Try moving your power bar and any other things that create heat outside the tent and you will see a difference, only issue it may become less convenient for you in the long run.

This may be a touch early, but I've signed up for an amateur grow contest (which I will diarize the grow for on here) and I will need the tent space as soon as possible, so I'm switching to flower, in the hopes that I can use this tent to flower the contest plants, as well. I'll be adding nutrients later in the week and will update then. Thanks 🙏

This week the girls kind of blew up a bit, and I've added a second trellis. I've stopped trying to fight the higher temperatures and am instead aiming to increase Humidity to make up for the extra perspiration, so far it's working well, though, the plants are drinking a lot more. Check it out, hope you're all having a great week! 🙏

So, Linda decided it was time to stretch, could it be that all four of these ladies are different phenos? It's looking like strong growth, so far - fingers crossed! Let me know what you think! Thanks, have a good one! 🙏

Switching to water only, PH to 6. Bertha is looking the healthiest, probably not a coincidence that I did the least training on her.

Brown leaves, decent sized buds - that's the name of the game right now - Bertha is still looking the strongest. This first run with the new tent and auto pot system has gone better than I expected, and I'm glad to have worked out some of the kinks, still lots of room for improvement. Thanks for taking a look! 🙏

Good god almighty, look at what we have here! - I have no reasonable way to weigh these suckers wet, sorry, plus I just don't wanna 😆 but these ladies are HEAVY! I've never grown such big plants! I'm excited to see what kind of numbers they put up when dry. It was difficult to get them out of the trellis net, and I think I'll try Mr. Canuck's tie down method on the next round, instead. I felt so terrible pulling the ladies out of that trellis net, it got a bit rough, and I'm glad this was a test run with crap genetics destined for CBD extraction. Thanks for taking a look 🙏, I'll make a post in a week, but honestly, I think these might take a bit longer than 7 days to dry Side thought - I thought CBD plants weren't supposed to grow large colas...guess that's just a myth. See you when it's dry 👋

These plants grew very well in the veg stage, filling the space nicely. I had some issues with heat through the entire grow, and these buds have mainly turned out super larfy, and destined for extraction. This was the first run in the new tent, with new equipment, and I'm very pleased that all four plants made it through the full cycle, despite all the environmental and equipment issues I encountered. I've solved most of the issues through the course of this grow, and I'm confident that the next harvest will blow this one away! Thanks for following along through this grow with me, and helping out with my questions! 🙏 P.S. the wet weight is a guestimate as the diary app shames me if I don't put something in the wet weight field.

Thanks for the responses to my question! Lots of good advice 🙏 My light cycle is set to run from 6pm to 6am for the flowering period, I've already got a big oscillating fan and a clip fan inside the tent, a duct exhaust fan at the top of the tent, and a duct intake fan at the bottom, I've been placing big movie cups of ice at the intake filter. The exhaust fan does a decent job at full blast, but then my RH drops from 60 to 40. I'm going to try adding a humidifier outside the tent, and add a second intake fan to try and force more cooler humid air into the tent. Failing this, I might dismantle the tents, run a long extension chord, and put my powered AC unit right in the grow room. If only I had more than one breaker for each floor, this would be so much easier! (no money for electrical work right now 😟 - oh well, I'll make it work! Thanks again everyone!

Cool idea, im curious to see how this turns out. Why not put a water pump in there as well so your soil will be self wicking?

@SmithicusAlbertaCanada, if you ever decide to build a system check mine out. Pretty cheap to make, easy to modify, and it is really reliable. It eliminates a lot of the isdues dwc can have

@SmithicusAlbertaCanada, Ah, I didn't realize those plants have a watering system built in, noticed after the first pic. Cool dude, I get it now.
SmithicusAlbertaCanada
SmithicusAlbertaCanadacommented6 years ago
Hi @Juicy_Frost, I used to run drippers and sprayers, but I hated having to fiddle with the tiny parts all the time when they get gunked up or break, not my style I guess. I also thought about doing a recirculating set up with a water pump; however, I decided on the gravity fed auto-pot system due to cost and to keep the amps low (I don't have a dedicated breaker, so I can only have so many devices drawing power before it trips the breaker). The Auto-pot system is doing a great job so far, and the nutrient solution does wick to the top of the growing medium ( I think the pressure from the air pump is helping push the solution to the top, as well). If I had the money, I would have got a dedicated breaker, and a current culture Recirculating DWC set up, as those things look amazing! Thanks for your comment 😊

Turning the lights on during the night is a great way to keep high (and low) temperatures in check. Moving the grow tent / box into a colder room helps too, if you can keep the window open to allow cool air in the room it helps too.

Stick
Stickcommentedweek 46 years ago
Hi @SmithicusAlbertaCanada! Since you've just jumped into the flowering stage, I would recommend to turn your lights on during the night, this will help in regulating the temp. If you can drive the air of your tent out of your house, it would be even better. You can build a DIY air conditionner with the help of a bucket, small fan, iced bottles, but it's an intensive work to keep the bottles cold enough. If your lamps are dimmable, you can dim the driver to the lowest voltage, for a few days only. So many of us are experiencing the heatwave 😖 Good luck with that, keep us updated and happy growing! 👊
