There's always sunshine after the rain. Week 2 was a struggle, but during week 3 the girls recovered and grew quite a bit. They even start to smell a bit. After I found out the roots were completely underdeveloped in week 2 and also shocked the plants due to transplant, I switched to another fertigation strategy: wet/slightly dry instead of a high frequency fertigation strategy. A day or 5 later, the plants perked up. They were no longer drooping and I saw some fat, hairy, bright white roots growing at the top of the medium. The few roots I saw during fertigation, looked a lot better than when I was transplanting them a day or 10 ago. When they started growing again, a new problem became manifest. On some of the lower leaves, some chlorosis and brown spotting became visible. It looks like a Ca deficiency. I am growing on a well buffered and rinsed coco medium, 35% perlite added, but I didn’t bother using a CalMag supplement. I was under the impression it wasn’t necessary because of a statement on the website of GHE, but, as you can read in the comment section below, the symptoms of the plants show the need of a CalMag supplement. This brings another challenge. The EC of my tap water is quite high (0,5 mS/cm). If I dilute the GHE FloraTrio nutrients mix to 50% of the recommended dose, I already end up with an EC of 1,2 mS/cm. Hence, there’s not much room to add a CalMag supplement without burning the young plants. On day 20, I fertigated at EC 1,3 mS/cm. On day 22 I fertigated again and started using a nitrogen-based CalMag supplement. Diluting the GHE mix 50% and adding 50% of the recommended CalMag dose, resulted in a EC of 1,4 mS/cm. Today, day 24, I noticed the very first (and super small) signs of burned tips. And one of the younger leaves showed the typical too much nitrogen point curved down. Conclusion: an EC of 1,3 mS/cm is the maximum the plants can handle right now. Today I fertigated again, I used the GHE CalMag supplement instead (less nitrogen). Since the symptoms of the Ca deficiency were still spreading (tho, very, very slowly), I gave a bigger dose of CalMag, but therefor, I could only add 33% of the recommended dose of GHE FloraTrio. It resulted in my target EC of 1,3 mS/cm. I think I can start daily fertigation soon, maybe even tomorrow and see how the plants react on it. It will probably be a mix of 50% of the recommended dose of FloraTrio and 50% of the recommended dose of CalMag for now. The girls are now working on their sixth node: it’s time to top them. I will top when the symptoms of the (early stage) Ca deficiency stop spreading. That might already be tomorrow. The same goes for the light: it’s still around 40% power. I guestimate that’s around 300 PPFD in the center; last grow the plants had no problems with 50-60% power. However, since they were in stress, I waited to power up the lights. If everything turns out to be in check (finally), I will also power up the lights a day or 2 after I topped them (unless they are stunted again). Thanks for all the help and advices when the plants were stressed and stay safe!

Grow Questions

Coco grow: seedlings started to droop. Maybe caused by over watering? During transplant I found out the roots were completely underdeveloped. The transplant shocked the plants. Growth is stunted. What can I do to get them to recover and thrive? Consult my diary for more details.

Yes it looks like they might be slightly overwatered, but it is pretty common for the roots to shock a little the first couple days after transplant. It helps of you can raise the light a little higher or turn the power down to lower the intensity of light they are getting for a few days. I don't think you have any major issues at this point. Just make sure they have a good environment and they will start growing once the roots settle in. Good luck!

Your setup is looking great, and the plants are doing decently so far. The pots look a little big for where the plants are, so easing up on the frequency like you're doing may be helpful in the short term to keep the roots aerated (even if it's hard to over water coco). Be careful though, as in my personal experience with coco, fertigation every couple days can lead to spikes in the EC at the root zone as the grow medium dries out. This can cause some nutrient issues (as in my NYC Diesel grow) so I now stick with 1+ a day fertigations. The information on cocoforcannabis is great and I recommend it highly. I am a big fan of GH Flora nutes, but are you also adding extra cal-mag? I wouldn't be able to grow without it in coco, even if it's starting off well buffered. I'm sure they will recover from the transplant stress and become lovely, high yielding plants. Happy growing! 👍

@Cheeba_Inu, yes, this helps, thanks a lot! I'll start using the calmag supplement tomorrow.

@ActioPauliana, sounds good! You're right that GHE is giving general advice about Cal mag, as a lot of people supplement it who don't need to. And they probably assume a lot of coco growers are using their coco line that doesn't need extra Cal mag as well. But Flora trio is great for coco with the extra boost. Cocoforcannabis has a great guide for how, when, and why to add Cal mag supplements if you haven't checked it out before: https://www.cocoforcannabis.com/needcalmag/ Since you are barely experiencing issues and don't have a lot of room to increase your EC you could start at a half dose and see how it goes. If the symptoms continue you can increase it. The older leaves won't stop showing symptoms, but newer leaves should grow in without the spotting/twisting/crisping . Hopefully that helps! The plants are most likely going to take off and explode with growth in the next week or so. Coco blows me away with the growth it promotes when everything is dialed in. Happy growing!

@Cheeba_Inu, thanks for your insights! Once again, you cleared a few things up for me. So, I wasn't 100% sure myself, but since you also conclude the symptoms are the first signs of Ca deficiency, I can no longer deny it 😏. And as you say: EC of feeding solution is already fine, given their age, so apparently I haven't delivered sufficient Ca to the medium and plants. After your post, I immediately ordered the GHE Calmag supplement. It will be delivered somewhere in the coming week. The next feed (tomorrow) I'll just use the supplement with high N. Still, it's weird tho. GHE stated on their website: "How to use GHE CalMag: Warning: Do not use with GHE soft water formulations, DualPart®️ Coco, or FloraNova®️: they already contain enough calcium for even R.O. water systems." They are also mentioning their Coco line, so maybe they are assuming people are using their Coco nutes if they grow on coco. But in that case, they should made it clear that when using the TriPart line on coco, a calmag supplement is necessary. By the way, I was going through the FAQ of their website and they stated the formula of the TriPart line is exactly the same in the USA and Europe. The difference in NPK values is the result of a difference between American and European legislation. That made me wonder: do they also sell two versions of Micro in the US (a soft and a hard water version)? However, I'm happy the products are the same worldwide: I was always very careful using feeding charts from US-based growers, as I was under the impression it was a different formula. But since the products are exactly the same, I can also study charts from US based growers. About the tapwater: there is about 40 mg/L calcium in my tapwater, but I'm not really sure if that causes the relatively high EC of my tapwater. Anyway, thanks again! 🙏

The grow continues to look great! Although light stress could be the culprit, I have also had plants that just started throwing a few bananas late into flower for no reason. I left them undisturbed and they never pollinated any bud before the whole plant got chopped. It looks like you caught them early and are getting close to harvest so I'm sure it will be fine! The buds are really coming along nicely regardless 👍
