This diary could be a photo gallery, dedicated to droopy plants. Just as in week 2, they are drooping again. However, this time Iโ€™m not worried at all. Iโ€™ll get back on that, but first: topping the plants. TOPPING In the beginning of the week, the plants had grown 5 nodes and were working on the 6th. Time to top these babies. I topped them down to the 5th or 4th node, depending on the space between the nodes. The tiny shoots that were now the top of the plant took over immediately and developed nicely this week. The girls didnโ€™t seem to be stunted due to the topping. TRAINING The plants are ultra bushy, internodal spacing is very short compared to my previous (and first) grow. The large fanleaves were obstructing lower side shoots to reach the light, so I helped them a bit by tucking the big leaves away. I have a few colaโ€™s on every plant into the light and in the following week I will start LST and maybe defoliate a bit to open up the plant. However, Iโ€™m on a time schedule (because of a planned holiday, but Iโ€™m not sure it will be possible at that time to travel to another continent): I should flip to flower somewhere between April 20 and 25. Hopefully, they will at least double in size before the switch. This strain doesnโ€™t stretch a lot during flower (according to the breeder), hence the canopy should already be quite big before flowering is induced. TRANSPLANT During the rest of the week, the plants grew nicely and it looked like they were growing out of their 4L pots. I had to start fertilize daily and I noticed a lot of roots poking through the bottom of the pots. That made me wonder: can you burry a fabric pot in a bigger fabric pot and will the roots just grow through the first pot? A lot of growers said it isnโ€™t possible, one said it is possible but with risks. I agree. I think the roots can grow easily through fabric pots (if the plants are healthy), I saw a lot of them poking through the bottom of my fabric pots. However, it might not be optimal to transplant that way, so I opted to transplant the conventional way, by removing the old pot. I was traumatized by the first transplant. As I explain in week 2: it was pure horror. I seriously damaged the roots and my plants were stunted for a day or 5. This time, I came prepared. A few days in advance, I mixed my coco and perlite and started fertigating the empty pots to create a medium that was exactly the same as the pots they were transplanted from. Since I decided to toss ugly duckling Hannah, I started with her first. I loosened the pot from the root ball with a sharp knife and peeled the fabric pot down. Hannah had a great and strong root ball. The pot was fully colonized, I saw roots everywhere. And the root ball was easy to keep in one piece. I tossed here anyway. The other three girls were transplanted into 15L fabric pots and I was able to transplant them quite neatly. I damaged some small roots at the bottoms of the pots, but nothing serious. Most of the root ball was just one piece and slipped easily into the prepared holes in the new medium. Nevertheless, they are still a bit droopy from transplant. But, as said, Iโ€™m not worried this time, because I know everything is in check and they will probably pick up a fast grow rate within a day or 2. All in all, I donโ€™t like my transplant strategy with the fabric pots. I will try a different strategy next grow and probably also skip one transplant (just do 2 instead of 3). Iโ€™m still a lazy stoner. Stay stafe!

Grow Questions

Coco grow: seedlings started to droop. Maybe caused by over watering? During transplant I found out the roots were completely underdeveloped. The transplant shocked the plants. Growth is stunted. What can I do to get them to recover and thrive? Consult my diary for more details.
Solved
Leaves. Curl down
Plant. Too short
Roots. Too few

Yes it looks like they might be slightly overwatered, but it is pretty common for the roots to shock a little the first couple days after transplant. It helps of you can raise the light a little higher or turn the power down to lower the intensity of light they are getting for a few days. I don't think you have any major issues at this point. Just make sure they have a good environment and they will start growing once the roots settle in. Good luck!

Your setup is looking great, and the plants are doing decently so far. The pots look a little big for where the plants are, so easing up on the frequency like you're doing may be helpful in the short term to keep the roots aerated (even if it's hard to over water coco). Be careful though, as in my personal experience with coco, fertigation every couple days can lead to spikes in the EC at the root zone as the grow medium dries out. This can cause some nutrient issues (as in my NYC Diesel grow) so I now stick with 1+ a day fertigations. The information on cocoforcannabis is great and I recommend it highly. I am a big fan of GH Flora nutes, but are you also adding extra cal-mag? I wouldn't be able to grow without it in coco, even if it's starting off well buffered. I'm sure they will recover from the transplant stress and become lovely, high yielding plants. Happy growing! ๐Ÿ‘

@Cheeba_Inu, yes, this helps, thanks a lot! I'll start using the calmag supplement tomorrow.

@ActioPauliana, sounds good! You're right that GHE is giving general advice about Cal mag, as a lot of people supplement it who don't need to. And they probably assume a lot of coco growers are using their coco line that doesn't need extra Cal mag as well. But Flora trio is great for coco with the extra boost. Cocoforcannabis has a great guide for how, when, and why to add Cal mag supplements if you haven't checked it out before: https://www.cocoforcannabis.com/needcalmag/ Since you are barely experiencing issues and don't have a lot of room to increase your EC you could start at a half dose and see how it goes. If the symptoms continue you can increase it. The older leaves won't stop showing symptoms, but newer leaves should grow in without the spotting/twisting/crisping . Hopefully that helps! The plants are most likely going to take off and explode with growth in the next week or so. Coco blows me away with the growth it promotes when everything is dialed in. Happy growing!

@Cheeba_Inu, thanks for your insights! Once again, you cleared a few things up for me. So, I wasn't 100% sure myself, but since you also conclude the symptoms are the first signs of Ca deficiency, I can no longer deny it ๐Ÿ˜. And as you say: EC of feeding solution is already fine, given their age, so apparently I haven't delivered sufficient Ca to the medium and plants. After your post, I immediately ordered the GHE Calmag supplement. It will be delivered somewhere in the coming week. The next feed (tomorrow) I'll just use the supplement with high N. Still, it's weird tho. GHE stated on their website: "How to use GHE CalMag: Warning: Do not use with GHE soft water formulations, DualPartยฎ๏ธ Coco, or FloraNovaยฎ๏ธ: they already contain enough calcium for even R.O. water systems." They are also mentioning their Coco line, so maybe they are assuming people are using their Coco nutes if they grow on coco. But in that case, they should made it clear that when using the TriPart line on coco, a calmag supplement is necessary. By the way, I was going through the FAQ of their website and they stated the formula of the TriPart line is exactly the same in the USA and Europe. The difference in NPK values is the result of a difference between American and European legislation. That made me wonder: do they also sell two versions of Micro in the US (a soft and a hard water version)? However, I'm happy the products are the same worldwide: I was always very careful using feeding charts from US-based growers, as I was under the impression it was a different formula. But since the products are exactly the same, I can also study charts from US based growers. About the tapwater: there is about 40 mg/L calcium in my tapwater, but I'm not really sure if that causes the relatively high EC of my tapwater. Anyway, thanks again! ๐Ÿ™

The grow continues to look great! Although light stress could be the culprit, I have also had plants that just started throwing a few bananas late into flower for no reason. I left them undisturbed and they never pollinated any bud before the whole plant got chopped. It looks like you caught them early and are getting close to harvest so I'm sure it will be fine! The buds are really coming along nicely regardless ๐Ÿ‘
