RQS Skunk XL on Coco under LED

ActioPauliana On Thursday, March 5, I planted 5 seeds of Royal Queens Seeds Skunk XL. It’s going to be my second grow (my first grow: https://growdiaries.com/diaries/45804-zamnesia-seeds-sticky-beast-automatic-grow-journal-by-actiopauliana). At the time I planted the seeds, I was still able to move around freely, go to a bar or what not. At this time, my whole continent is basically in lock down. Incredible times, but I’m very happy with my first harvest. I’ve enough to get through months of isolation 😊. GERMINATION I planted five seeds in Jiffy pallets on March 5, after I soaked the Jiffy pallets and fluffed them up. Four seedlings became visible on Sunday March 8. The next day, those four had open cotyledons, but the fifth was nowhere to be seen. I dug and found her: she had germinated, but didn’t make it above the ground. I had buried the seed too deep. The others were fine and Monday March 9 will be day 1. On day 1, I potted the Jiffy pallets into 1L pots, filled with coco (Canna Professional Plus, well buffered and rinsed). I wetted the coco with plain PH’ed water, the runoff was at EC 0,4 and PH 5,8. FERTIGATION For this grow, I’ll use tap water, EC 0,5, PH 8,2 and GHE Flora Trio for my fertigation. I have a calmag supplement, but I will only use it if deficiencies show, since I’m using the GHE soft water formula and GHE says you don’t need a calmag supplement with the soft water formula. For this grow, I’ve invested in a PH and EC pen (BlueLab). I fertigated on day 2 for the first time at a 1-1-1 ratio GHE Gro, Micro and Bloom (0,7 EC, PH 6,4, which is around 0,2 ml/l per component). I slowly increased the strength with each fertigation and today, day 7, I’m at EC 1,1 and PH 6,4. The runoff is still at PH 5,8. I’ll reduce the speed of EC increase this week and slowly build up to EC 1,4 for most of the veg phase (maybe.1 or .2 higher in late veg). MEET THE GIRLS Hannah: She’s the smallest of the bunch and showed her head above the soil a few hours after the other were already born. She’s looking fine, just a bit smaller. Iris: she’s doing fine, growing fast the last few days. Jannine: she’s pretty much a copy of Iris, same size, same grow rate. Kim: she’s the biggest, her first pair of leaves are bigger than the those from the other girls. She also germinated first and her root was getting out of the Jiffy pallet by multiple centimeters after just 4 days. Thanks for stopping by and I wish you all lots of health and strength. ActioPauliana The last 10 days or so have been a real struggle. Around day 10 I noticed the seedlings were a bit droopy. They were still looking healthy and were growing fast. They also tended to be less droopy after the lights were on for several hours. However, from day 13 they really started to droop. I was fertilizing twice a day and I noticed some algae growing at the jiffy pallets. The plants were in 1L fabric pots, filled with coco and 35% perlite. I figured overwatering couldn’t be a problem. The runoff measured around 1.0 EC and pH 5.8, so that seemed also in check. They were growing their 4th node and I figured maybe they were rootbound. On day 14 I transplanted them into 4L fabric pots (also coco and 35% perlite). When I transplanted, I found out the roots were completely underdeveloped. Just one flimsy central root with a few sides. There wasn’t a root ball at all. After the second plant, it became clear all the plants were in the same condition. To make matters even worse, during the transplant process, I damaged the roots. It was an impossible job to get them out of their 1L fabric seedling pots. I’ll never use a fabric pot as a seedling cup again (although, since there were barely any roots, there wasn’t a ‘ball’ that sticks together, which also makes it a lot harder). The whole process was pure horror. Why did my seedlings began to droop? Why were the roots completely underdeveloped? I fertigated twice a day (tapwater EC 0.5, EC of feeding mix 1.3, pH 6.4. I build up to EC 1.3 slowly, day by day) with a good 20% runoff (EC 1.0, pH 5.8). This strategy was based on information on the website Cocoforcannabis. However, looking around on other famous websites and forums, I found a lot of people having success with a wet/dry cycle on coco (but not completely dry!), at least for the first few weeks, to help the roots develop. Most people seemed to be using a root stimulant if they are using a high frequency fertigation strategy. With that in mind, I adopted a new strategy and fertigate every 2 to 3 days since day 14 (which is now 4 days ago). They are in 4L pots and barely have any roots, hence it takes a while for the coco to dry a bit. The plants have recovered a bit: only one of them is still really droopy, but the others look a little better compared to last Sunday. Recovery was and is also harder, since we have extremely dry weather, quite rare in my region. RH dropped below 35%. With some wet towels in the grow tent and the exhaust on the lowest, I’m able to push RH to around 45%. The lights are dimmed to around 40%, pulling 140 watts (320 being the maximum). Last: I’m still in doubt over watering was the only cause of my problems. Off course, the transplant shocked them hard, stunted their growth completely, but I already had problems before that. A lot of sources say over watering in a coco/perlite mix in fabric pots (and these were only 1L pots) is impossible. However, my coco was always wet and there was some algae growing around the jiffy pallets. Did I grow lazy roots? Is there anything I’m missing? How to get these plants to thrive? Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks and stay healthy! UPDATE DAY 20: On day 19, the plants looked a lot better, they were no longer drooping. However, another problem seems to manifest itself: there seems to be a deficiency, maybe Ca, maybe it's a general sign of underfeeding, since I gave them a low dose of nutes during te recovery period. Still under investigation, but I'm weirdly happy about it: suddenly they are growing fast and they look happy. Hunger is a good sign after a week of droopy, stunted plants that barely grow.

ActioPauliana There's always sunshine after the rain. Week 2 was a struggle, but during week 3 the girls recovered and grew quite a bit. They even start to smell a bit. After I found out the roots were completely underdeveloped in week 2 and also shocked the plants due to transplant, I switched to another fertigation strategy: wet/slightly dry instead of a high frequency fertigation strategy. A day or 5 later, the plants perked up. They were no longer drooping and I saw some fat, hairy, bright white roots growing at the top of the medium. The few roots I saw during fertigation, looked a lot better than when I was transplanting them a day or 10 ago. When they started growing again, a new problem became manifest. On some of the lower leaves, some chlorosis and brown spotting became visible. It looks like a Ca deficiency. I am growing on a well buffered and rinsed coco medium, 35% perlite added, but I didn’t bother using a CalMag supplement. I was under the impression it wasn’t necessary because of a statement on the website of GHE, but, as you can read in the comment section below, the symptoms of the plants show the need of a CalMag supplement. This brings another challenge. The EC of my tap water is quite high (0,5 mS/cm). If I dilute the GHE FloraTrio nutrients mix to 50% of the recommended dose, I already end up with an EC of 1,2 mS/cm. Hence, there’s not much room to add a CalMag supplement without burning the young plants. On day 20, I fertigated at EC 1,3 mS/cm. On day 22 I fertigated again and started using a nitrogen-based CalMag supplement. Diluting the GHE mix 50% and adding 50% of the recommended CalMag dose, resulted in a EC of 1,4 mS/cm. Today, day 24, I noticed the very first (and super small) signs of burned tips. And one of the younger leaves showed the typical too much nitrogen point curved down. Conclusion: an EC of 1,3 mS/cm is the maximum the plants can handle right now. Today I fertigated again, I used the GHE CalMag supplement instead (less nitrogen). Since the symptoms of the Ca deficiency were still spreading (tho, very, very slowly), I gave a bigger dose of CalMag, but therefor, I could only add 33% of the recommended dose of GHE FloraTrio. It resulted in my target EC of 1,3 mS/cm. I think I can start daily fertigation soon, maybe even tomorrow and see how the plants react on it. It will probably be a mix of 50% of the recommended dose of FloraTrio and 50% of the recommended dose of CalMag for now. The girls are now working on their sixth node: it’s time to top them. I will top when the symptoms of the (early stage) Ca deficiency stop spreading. That might already be tomorrow. The same goes for the light: it’s still around 40% power. I guestimate that’s around 300 PPFD in the center; last grow the plants had no problems with 50-60% power. However, since they were in stress, I waited to power up the lights. If everything turns out to be in check (finally), I will also power up the lights a day or 2 after I topped them (unless they are stunted again). ActioPauliana This diary could be a photo gallery, dedicated to droopy plants. Just as in week 2, they are drooping again. However, this time I’m not worried at all. I’ll get back on that, but first: topping the plants. TOPPING In the beginning of the week, the plants had grown 5 nodes and were working on the 6th. Time to top these babies. I topped them down to the 5th or 4th node, depending on the space between the nodes. The tiny shoots that were now the top of the plant took over immediately and developed nicely this week. The girls didn’t seem to be stunted due to the topping. TRAINING The plants are ultra bushy, internodal spacing is very short compared to my previous (and first) grow. The large fanleaves were obstructing lower side shoots to reach the light, so I helped them a bit by tucking the big leaves away. I have a few cola’s on every plant into the light and in the following week I will start LST and maybe defoliate a bit to open up the plant. However, I’m on a time schedule (because of a planned holiday, but I’m not sure it will be possible at that time to travel to another continent): I should flip to flower somewhere between April 20 and 25. Hopefully, they will at least double in size before the switch. This strain doesn’t stretch a lot during flower (according to the breeder), hence the canopy should already be quite big before flowering is induced. TRANSPLANT During the rest of the week, the plants grew nicely and it looked like they were growing out of their 4L pots. I had to start fertilize daily and I noticed a lot of roots poking through the bottom of the pots. That made me wonder: can you burry a fabric pot in a bigger fabric pot and will the roots just grow through the first pot? A lot of growers said it isn’t possible, one said it is possible but with risks. I agree. I think the roots can grow easily through fabric pots (if the plants are healthy), I saw a lot of them poking through the bottom of my fabric pots. However, it might not be optimal to transplant that way, so I opted to transplant the conventional way, by removing the old pot. I was traumatized by the first transplant. As I explain in week 2: it was pure horror. I seriously damaged the roots and my plants were stunted for a day or 5. This time, I came prepared. A few days in advance, I mixed my coco and perlite and started fertigating the empty pots to create a medium that was exactly the same as the pots they were transplanted from. Since I decided to toss ugly duckling Hannah, I started with her first. I loosened the pot from the root ball with a sharp knife and peeled the fabric pot down. Hannah had a great and strong root ball. The pot was fully colonized, I saw roots everywhere. And the root ball was easy to keep in one piece. I tossed here anyway. The other three girls were transplanted into 15L fabric pots and I was able to transplant them quite neatly. I damaged some small roots at the bottoms of the pots, but nothing serious. Most of the root ball was just one piece and slipped easily into the prepared holes in the new medium. Nevertheless, they are still a bit droopy from transplant. But, as said, I’m not worried this time, because I know everything is in check and they will probably pick up a fast grow rate within a day or 2. All in all, I don’t like my transplant strategy with the fabric pots. I will try a different strategy next grow and probably also skip one transplant (just do 2 instead of 3). I’m still a lazy stoner. Stay stafe!

ActioPauliana This was a solid week. As expected the girls recovered from the transplant and picked up a fast grow rate shortly after my previous update. They've grown about 2 cm per day. On day 35, I started with LST and also removed some of the big fan leaves to open up the plants. They didn’t mind at all and after barely 20 hours, they already grew back. The last few days, I kept on LST’ing and I defoliated a leaf here and there today, but nothing serious. I’ll do a bigger defoliation session a day or 3 before the switch to 12/12. I’m feeding every other day at EC 1.4 right now and the plants seem to be happy with it. It won’t be too long now before I’ll switch them into 12/12, probably a day or 10. ActioPauliana Week 6 already and while the spread of the virus seems to be slowing down a bit on a worldwide scale, my girls are growing incredibly fast. I did a lot of LST and defoliation this week, therefor, the plants didn’t gain any height. Instead in just 5 days the whole tent was filled with a nice, flat canopy with dozens of bud sites. I’ve added a photo from 5 days ago, just after LST and defoliation, to compare with photo’s from today. Insane how fast they filled the tent up. During those 5 days, I kept on LST’ing and I did another defoliation session yesterday. Jannine and Kim have very dense growth, while Iris is a little less bushy. Her main tops tend to outgrow the rest, but I’ve managed to keep them down. The result is a flat canopy that filled the tent. They are ready to flower and tomorrow I’ll make the switch to 12/12. Since the girls are already smelly, I installed the filter today. I kept on feeding at 1,4 mS/cm, I will increase very slowly to 1,5 and see what happens. pH is in check: 6,2 is going in, run off is at 5,8. Temps are fine, as is RH. Happy growing and stay safe!

ActioPauliana It’s a jungle out there! The tent has filled out completely and I love the canopy. This week I switched them to 12/12 and did a big defoliation and lollipopping session on the day of the switch. During the week, I had to defoliate here and there to prevent wet spots and remove big fanleaves that blocked potential bud sites. However, the plants just keep on producing more and bigger leaves every day. As you can see from the pictures, it’s a freaking jungle. I’ll do another defoliation session somewhere this week and probably another when the flower stretch has come to an end. I also made a drain container: the pots of the plants are elevated above this container and the drain runs into the container via holes in the platforms they’re sitting on. The container is slightly graded, so the water runs into the bottom right corner of the container. However, I have to invest in a pump that allows me to suck through a tube or something similar, because my transfer/siphon pump isn’t able to suck out the water if the water level drops under 1 cm. This means about 1 to 2 liters of water in this big container, which is a problem, as it causes high RH. Nevertheless, I love that transfer/siphon pump for fertilizing: it’s very easy to pump in 3 liters of fertilized water from a bucket and spread it out into the pot easily. The water pressure is perfect. Not too strong, but it only takes a minute or so to pump 3 liters. I’m feeding at almost 1.6 mS/cm, the plants seem to handle it fine. The EC of the drain is always lower, around 1.1 or 1.2 mS/cm. pH is at 5.8. Since a few days, I switched to the preflower recipe for fertigation (GHE FloraTrio). Since I switched to 12/12, I increased light power to around 65% (210 watts). And last but not least: yesterday I noticed - although very small - the first pistils developing on bud sites. Afterwards, I was a bit worried I took away too much. I had a huge pile of leaves removed. But the girls didn’t bother at all and they grew it all back in just 5 days. LST wasn't necessary anymore, the branches are growing at the same rate and the canopy is relatively flat. After the defoliation session, I raised the light a bit, but the girls are growing fast: 13 cm in 6 days. They’re in the peak of the flowering stretch and slowly, but the first small buds begin to develop at the top of the plants. Maybe another week of serious stretching and then the plants will focus more on bud development. The girls are 57 days old and 14 days into flowering. They’re looking super healthy and vibrant and I am more than ready to see some buds. Happy growing & stay safe!

ActioPauliana Another week of happy growing. They are now 63 days old and it’s been 20 days since the switch to 12/12. The first days of the week, the girls stretched quite a bit, but the last few days, the development of the buds picked up speed. Also, yesterday, I noticed trichomes around the small buds. Vertical growth seems to be slowing down the last few days. Only one conclusion is possible: the girls are switching gear from preflower stretching to full flower. Therefore, two days ago, I switched to the full flower feeding schedule. During the week I defoliated twice: at the beginning of the week and again today. Especially today I was very careful not to overdo, since the girls are no longer capable to grow a lot of new leaves. Every time after defoliation, I raised the lights back to 50 cm above the canopy. The lights are now almost at full power (dimmed to ~85%). Thanks for stopping by, happy growing and stay safe!

ActioPauliana Ten weeks in already, time is flying by. The smell of the little buds is increasing. Compared to my first grow, the smell of this strain is not as intoxicating, but pleasantly fresh. It’s a true delight to open the tent: a tropical fruitfest comes to your nose, with clear mango tones and a more subtle pineapple. There’s a bit of mint in there too and a touch of vanilla in the background. Lovely. The plants still grew a bit, especially the first few days of the week. However, the last 3 days I wasn’t able to measure any difference. The stretching has come to an end. In the beginning of the week I did quite a big defoliation session and was kind of worried I overdid, but the plants didn’t bother at all and it seemed like a few days later, the whole canopy was closed again. Hence, yesterday I did a small defoliation session. I think from this point on, it’s going to be on autopilot to harvest, without applying any training techniques. This strain seems to be able to cope with a lot of light. The highest parts of the plants are only 40 cm (16 inch) away from the light, but they seem tot be handling it fine. EC is at 1.8 for a while now and they also seem to be able to handling it fine. I don’t think I have to increase EC any further. One weird thing though: the pH of the runoff from Iris is consistently lower compared to the runoff of the other girls, but she’s getting the exact same feeding mix. Her runoff pH is (for like 5 weeks now) around 5.5 while the runoff of the other girls has been consistently between 5.9 and 6.1. It made me wonder: can different pheno’s cause different rootzone pH? I am a little bit worried it’s going too slow (compared to reference grows from other diaries), but patience is hard and there’s still 3 to 4 weeks of flowering to be done. The breeder advises 7 to 8 weeks, which is a bit optimistic, but they also advise 9 weeks for optimal taste and a smoother effect. The girls still grew a bit vertically, so even 5 weeks into flower, they aren’t fully focused on the development of the buds. Maybe this week, some serious XL bud stacking will take place 😊. I had some problems this week with heat and humidity. For two days, temperatures were at 28 degrees with lights on; a bit too high, but nothing extreme. More problematic was RH: it oscillated a lot between 45 and 60% during lights on and peaked at 70% with lights off. There will be some dry weather the days ahead, so RH will probably stabilize around 50% the following days. Nevertheless, I increased the power of both fans and the exhaust to the max, so there’s more than enough airflow throughout the whole tent. I did some slight defoliation, but nothing extreme. I don’t want to stress them out in this phase and cause them to herm. Hence, I took away max. 2 leaves per plant per day and only when tucking away wasn’t possible. The run off EC is at 2.0-2.1, while 1.8 (close to 1.9) is going in. pH of the runoff is around 5.9, except Iris’ run off, that one is always at 5.5. Hopefully, I will see some classical XL buds building up this week and head on for a nice harvest. Thanks for reading, stay safe and happy growing!

ActioPauliana This week temperatures increased due to hot weather, but until now, it didn’t cause any significant problems. The girls started to drink a bit more: fertigating 2 liters every 24 hours barely results in any runoff. However, the runoff EC increased a lot and a few days into the week, first runoff EC measured close to 3.0. I figure the girls cannot uptake all the nutrients from the water, as they are drinking more due to the heat, therefor, leaving more behind in the medium, which causes higher runoff EC. Since I already had a bottle of GHE FloraKleen in my possession, I gave it a try. I mixed 10 L of water with 15 ml of FloraKleen, pH’ed it down, gave a little over 3 liters to each plant, waited a few hours and then continued regular fertigation. I reduced the EC of the feeding mix to 1.7. Since the treatment with FloraKleen, EC of the runoff has been around 2.0. Hence, it worked like charm and I really like the fact that you don’t have to put liters of water through the medium to reduce EC. FloraKleen does a great job breaking up the buildup salts and the plants had no problems with it. The buds are developing really nice. This week was the first week without any measurable vertical growth, but the buds almost doubled in size. Suddenly, things are going fast. This month, they will be harvested for sure. The breeder advises 9 weeks of flower for optimal taste and potency, which is 3 weeks from now. Stay healthy & happy growing!

It became clear to me when I opened the tent two days ago. There they were, sticking out one of the main cola’s, it was almost impossible to miss them: 2 bright lime green banana’s. It was like the little dicks were smiling to me. I immediately removed them and search all the plants thoroughly multiple times for more, but didn’t found one. So, I guess I’m now a member of the ‘hermies club’. As for the cause: I suspect light stress. The light was close on the canopy, a little closer than (for example) dr. Cocoforcannabis recommends for this light. I found the two banana’s on Jannine and the bud that had them, is the one that’s almost in the middle of the tent, where the light is the brightest. The plant on the left, Kim, was also showing some foxtailing on her highest buds. Hence, I raised the lights 6-7 centimeters. Hopefully, I took away the cause of the hermies; off course, I’m keeping a sharp eye on the buds, but I haven’t found any more than those two. Also, EC of the drain tends to go up, hence every few days, I now just give them plain pH’ed water, to prevent high EC spikes. The trichomes are developing nicely. I bought a jeweler's loupe to study them, because with my USB microscope it’s almost impossible to get a clear picture (I don’t have a steady hand). The girls are 7 weeks into flower: there are no amber trichomes, but most trichomes are partly cloudy (30~50%) and a minority is still fully clear. I guess two more weeks before harvest, maybe 1,5 week. I switch to GHE Ripen later this week. I didn’t use such a product during my first grow, so I’m curious to see if it does something good. ActioPauliana The date is set: June 21, next Sunday, the plants will be harvested. Today, they are exactly 8 weeks in flower. Nearly all the trichomes are either partly or fully cloudy. On the sugar leaves, groups of amber trichomes are easy to spot, but on the calyxes I can only spot an amber trichome head here and there. The girls still look really great, but it’s noticeable they’re getting near the end of their cycle: older leaves at the top of the canopy in the brightest part of the tent, are cupping and the tips are getting brittle. I noticed some of the smaller sugar leaves have yellowing tips. At first, I was worried for mold, but I can’t pull them of the bud, so that’s probably not the case. I think there’s still a bit of light stress, even though I raised the light a bit last week. Mold and bud rot is something I’m lookout for constantly, especially now the RH is high. The weather causes it to be 60% in our house, the highest I ever measured since I started measuring in November last year. Normally it’s between 40 and 50%. Considering the weather reports, the RH won’t come down in the following days. In the tent, RH is between 57 and 62% during lights one, but I measured a spike of 77% during lights off. Last week, I switched to fertilizing with GHE Ripen only. Today was their last fertigation. I’ll flush thoroughly tomorrow, give them plain water on Wednesday and then just have them dry out a bit until Sunday. Friday will be their last day with lights on. They’ll have 36 hours of darkness before I harvest. Happy growing & stay safe!

The next day, I watered with plain tapwater and runoff EC was the same as our tapwater. That Wednesday, was the last day I gave them water. On Friday, they had their 12 hours of light for the last time. I forgot to make a family picture just before harvest, but I did make a movie during those last hours of light. After 36 hours of darkness, I harvested on sunday. The coco had dried up quite a bit. The pots felt light to the touch, but when I removed Jannine from the tent (the one that was always in the middle), she immediately collapsed under the weight of her own buds! The same happened to Kim, only Iris was able to holdup most buds, but with a lot of effort. Apparently they had support from each other and the walls of the tent all that time. The buds were promising: heavy, hard and dense. Can't wait to see how they work out after drying and curing. Even the buds lower on the plants were not nearly as fluffy as my first grow, but more like little marbles. My first grow, I trimmed everything wet, but this time, I only removed the fan leaves and some of the bigger sugar leaves. Also, I kept the branches bigger this time. I threw a lot of the little buds in the trim pile, but since they were still looking and feeling like some good buds (but just small) I decided after harvesting the first plant, to throw them in separate containers. So I now have the trim from all the plants, mixed with some of the smaller buds from Jannine and two separate containers with the smaller buds from both Iris and Kim. It went into the freezer fresh, directly after harvest. Since I am lazy, I ordered a bubble washer, which will be delivered somewhere this week, to ease up the hash making proces. Can't wait to try some of the hash from these girls! As for most of the buds, they are drying in the tent. The circumstances could be a lot better: for weeks during flower, RH in our house was at 60%, but in the 24 hours directly after harvest, it came down to 40%. The weather changed from very humid to very dry and it will be like this until the end of the week. Considering it's about 23 degrees C in the drying room (maybe 22 during night) and the fact it will become increasingly warmer the next few days, I am worried about the buds drying to fast (by far my biggest concern), but also loosing some potency. It is now 24 hours after harvest and the buds are still pretty wet, so at least 3 days of drying should be possible, maybe 4. A few days slower would be better, but probably unlikely. Anyway, this ends my second grow. Off course, I will be back with the final results in a few weeks, after drying, curing, making hash of the trim/popcorn buds and off course, testing it all. ActioPauliana The final numbers: Kim: 108 grams Iris: 86 grams Janine: 129 grams Total: 323 grams About 50% of the harvest are really nice, quite compact buds with at least a decent size. The other 50% is smaller and a bit more fluffy, but still great to smoke. After harvest, I froze the trim and made hash from it: it yielded almost 5 grams of superb hash. I rolled a temple ball from it. Most of the trimming was done after drying and I also yielded about 8 grams of hash from that dry trim. It's not as great as the hash made from the freshly harvested trim. There's still about 100 grams of small buds and trim in the freezer (not included in amount harvested). That was also frozen fresh and will probably yield another 10 grams of hash. All in all: great result, I'm really satisfied. Off course, I'm looking for improvement for my next grow, which I'm currently doing preparations for. I'll expect to start my next grow in a few days, around the midst of September.
