This plant came out smaller than I hoped, but this is very high quality bud and the smoke is one of the favourites from this year. The plant turned colour due to low overnight temperatures and the leaves went from purple to nearly black at the end. The bud is colourful, nicely dense and it makes a very nice smoke. This was started late in the season for northern Canada (June 29) but it came through easily. Would be bigger if it had caught more sun around the solstice and had more consistent watering.

This plant was started very late (June 29) and was harvested Oct 2 or Day 92. It was smaller than expected and this might be due to inadequate watering. I was only inspecting it every few days and the helper was a bit forgetful about watering. With an earlier start to take advantage of the long sunlight hours around the solstice, and better tending, I’m sure this plant would get much bigger. The plant endured some quite low overnight temperatures and turned a really nice purple. The low overnight temps may also have limited the size of the plant. Furthermore, this was an early attempt at freeze drying and it got too dry. Need to shorten the drying cycle time I think. The dry weight is only 20% of the wet weight, but I think it should be be more like 30%. Volume wise it looks like close to a standard ounce, but the weight is low due to lack of moisture in the bud. The over dried buds are in mason jars with a small piece of wet paper towel to allow them to rehydrate and then Boveda packs. The freeze dryer works great but it’s tricky to optimize. Practice, practice practice. The buds rehydrate easily and it takes some getting used to the look of freeze dried bud, but they look, smoke, and taste great. Need to measure dry weights after curing not right out of dryer.

@Northern_Ent, Yeah I usually do it for all my plants. Although this time with my Jack 47 XL i decided to experiment and see what happens when I don't tie them out. It'll be good to compare both our grows.

@mrgold10, thanks. I’m impressed with the tie down technique...seems effective and doesn’t slow the growth.

@Jerrylarrydalton, not sure but lows about 5C or possibly a bit lower. My problem this far north is lack of strong sunlight to finish flowering. Most other plants were still okay with a bit of frost. Potatoes and tomatoswere killed off before the cannabis plants so they can take a bit of cold. Good luck.

Damn if yours was that short on week 5 that means I should have a monster auto on my hands lol. Mines week 4 at 18 inchs an no sign of budding yet. Only regrets is the 3 gallon bag shes in lol.. the one time I go small the plants huge.. for an auto.

@Jerrylarrydalton, oh yeah you’ve got a big 4 week old going. I tied mine down for a few days which might have limited the height but it really got the lower buds going. Good luck 🤠

What freeze dryer did you get mate. I just ordered a harvest right and trying to figure out where to start? The problem with being on the cutting edge of a technology is no one has drawn up any tutorials yet😂

@GuerrillaNo_4, my freeze dried stuff definitely. Now that I’m pretty much out from last year I’m buying some commercial weed again here in Canada and in general I don’t like the regular stuff as much. Freeze dried is lower density but really why should that even matter? It’s smoother and more flavourful so what’s not to like? Likely even has a slightly higher cannabinoid level and more terpenes, so all good in my opinion. And the dryers are great for hash making. 😎

@GuerrillaNo_4, that’s exactly what I concluded. Slightly different product but I’ve been quite happy with it.

At what stage did she turn colors on ya?
Northern_Ent
Northern_Entcommented4 years ago
@Jerrylarrydalton, the colour change was due to the low overnights temps we get here. This plant has stayed outside all along and we routinely get nights down to 5 C in September but no frost yet. You’ll see the transition in the pics in the middle of Week 12. 😎
