Howdy Peeps!! πŸ‘ Last diary of the week, thank f#@k for that 🀣 Not that I'm not committed anymore but Spring just keeps dishing out chores, after 8h gardening it's just challenging to write about the 8h gardening πŸ˜‚ But we're here and defeated the inner b*&#h for at least another week 🀣 As for Barry he seems to approve his new surroundings and did pretty well last week.. He doubled in size and got a bit more stretchy, just like Jack did.. Didn't give any extra water since last week but today he got is second to last weekly treat of Seasol at 50%, next week 100% and from then on they will all be getting watering supplements and weekly Aloe foliar spray. As for training, I have not the slightest clue what to do with him πŸ™„ I wanted to do an S shape as in a combination of his siblings training but I'm backing off on that because of needing work space at soil level for topdressing, hence the reason I use the modified tomato ring for sister Strawberry. If it weren't for my genius prune and topping skills I would try Nebula's spin on the Nuggbucket manifolding technique but yeah πŸ€¦πŸ˜‚ Maybe some kind of SCROG construction, dunno πŸ˜πŸ™„ Cheers for reading along my friends, have a good week ahead!! 😎✌️

Grow Questions

I figured I would start off my first grow question with a bang: I'm thinking about turning Barry into Bonsai Barry. So basically, put him in the 7Gal pot and root prune where ideally you would repot (I would say 2-3 times knowing that I'm early).. 3..... 2...... 1....... SHOOT

hey there Smartie, root pruning totally works but it's even more fun in hydro. in soil the roots are in the soil so contrary to hydro you cant just pick up the plant take your scissors and cut the roots. Try both you'll see a huge difference. Root pruning in soil you can also do chemically with a chelation agent that can break down the roots for you as you go along. you can get really impressive results using humic acid regularly. hope this helps ! πŸš€

Today I noticed all my outdoor plants have pistils after being 3-5weeks outside. Is this normal and will they continue veg due to increasing days/temps? Also, could this be reversed with additional light? Currently in the 7th week of Spring with 14h light and 13h sunrise.

Hi! It's normal that some strains show sex earlier than others and some (like yours) in early veg state but it only means they are showing sex but not yet flowering. It looks like you have photoperiod plants so they wont flower until they have 12hrs of continuous darkness

@Mrs_Larimar, thanks for the compliment (although besides thinking styles and passion, I don't see a lot of similarities yet πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚) I'm proudly grown in Australia on Belgian rootstock πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜πŸ‘

@Shooey, haha, should let the misses read this, maybe she would finally underst...... No, not gonna happen 🀣🀣 You have my bloody interest now, that's for sure πŸ‘ What % of cover and colour you planning on taking for the shade cloth? Good on ya mate! ✌️

@Smartie, i may have got a bit carried away!!! I ordered an outdoor wedding marquee from e bay and am chatting to a company that will custom cut the shadecloth with eyelets. You know when you have these bright ideas and before you know it you have ordered and paid for all this shit!! Thats me,, put it down to the amnesia haze 🀣 hope it fits in the garden!!

Thanks @Shooey πŸ‘ As I mentioned before it needs more than a few adjustments to be perfect. It sure looks good but at 1,8m height and only 1m depth it doesn't provide enough shade where/when I want it. Also the sun is not traveling in an exact arc above the plants so that makes it even more challenging. I probably look to have roughly 0.5m adjustable shade cloth on the left side and the front that is attached to the top and that can be rolled down as needed πŸ˜‰ So yeah, my advice would be to have a big enough surface in relation to your plants if you only cover the roof with shade cloth πŸ‘ Interested to see yours, good luck with it ✌️

Chitosan from crab meal goes a long way with promoting roots and keeps away bugs. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ good stuff. In my weather, 1/3 peat moss would be too wet.

@Med_in_Tropic, Thanks for the info πŸ‘ It's my first shot at organic and loving everything about it so far. Glad you subscribed, cheers for that! ✌️

Hi @Smartie, fish also has amino and calcium. The combination accelerates things. I like it because these are organic. Happy growing

@Med_in_Tropic, Pleased to see this post, spot on sir πŸ‘ The chitosan is probably the main reason people use it, other than that it's mostly just a nitrogen source I thought. For this reason the guys from OGS said to use more Fin 'N' Feather for the nitrogen and their watering supplement which contains chitosan πŸ˜‰ I updated the recipe with some more details on the Hydro Frass, check it out ✌️

Smartie
Smartie
@CRiSPrGrow, Sure, thanks a lot πŸ‘ I gave it a bit more thought and, besides the fact that it's perfectly possible to prune roots, I'm not in a ideal situation to do it: round pots (there's a reason bonsai are in square/shallow pots πŸ˜‰) and limited organic soil.. I literally had this brainfart 10min before posting πŸ˜‚ Thanks again, feel free to follow my Outdoor diaries, should be fun 😁✌️

Nicely doneπŸ‘Œ The weather looks great😎 We have about 3-5cm. of snow already, don't like it but not much you can do about it😡 The little kids coming for halloween looked funny, all bundled up plus a costume, they could hardly walkπŸ˜‚ Grow Big!!

@Shooey, Cheers bro, first time I smelled it it instantly reminded me of horse stables, I reckon that's what they feed them but don't quote me on that πŸ˜‰ Happy that at least it looks good, other than that it's going to be a pain in the d*&k I guess πŸ˜‚ watering is challenging (don't like that stuff too much on my babies), topdressing is going to be fun and ofcourse the LST will only make things more complicated 🀣 Ofcourse I don't doubt the results so I will have to figure it out, one way or another πŸ‘ Cheers

It’s a good looking bunch smartie! Best of luck for the season mate. I made the same mistake last year. Planted on Father’s Day!! Both plants bolted at 5 weeks, but as it turned out it was great! I brought them inside each night and got an early harvest!! My mistake after that was trying to nurse seedlings through mid summer, it was brutally hot and they struggled, so this year I started even earlier for the early harvest and hope to have another run in late October. πŸ™‚πŸ»

@Shooey, Thank you sir πŸ‘ I almost considered to let this bunch flower early as well because I like the idea of 2 grows a year.. Thanks to you for putting that in my head πŸ˜‚
