Week 1 of the latest cycle and starting out with some new hardware and an expanded grow print👍. We’re running 4 autos via a recirculating Dutch bucket system. First time on a dutchy so it’s gonna be interesting to see how it stacks up against DWC. I’ll give a full rundown on the system I’ve cobbled together on the next update.
So far - all seedlings have germ’d without issue using the standard p-towel method. Why more people don’t use this method on GD is beyond me. It’s so reliable that some breeders even warranty your seeds if you use this method and more than 1 seed fails to crack. We’ve got little sprouts coming up now and it’s all just waiting for those first couple fan leaves to come out and those roots to run to the bottom of each bucket. They’ve been placed in root riot cubes (essentially a version of rapid rooters) like most of our runs and I’d recommend their use with all autos. Time and stress on young autos is key so they need the absolute best start you can give them👌.
End of week update - looks like we got 4 quality little seedlings here👍. Alls good other than battling a ph issue for most of the week. Keeps spiking overnight for no real reason - hopefully it’ll even out and isn’t the early sign of a major problem🤞.
Background
The strain line up on this grow is look’n quite saucy 😈. We’ve got 2 FB strains this time around - Gorilla Cookies (seems we always have some GSC cross in the works). Mainly because the colours look stellar and remind me of a sugar breathe we did last year that was 🔥. The other FB is their original Cheese strain... because we already smoked all our cheese... and we really like our cheese...😉. Emerald triangle was kind enough to include a freebie of Lemon Haze. Wasn’t really big on the list but we haven’t done a haze strain to write home about yet so worth a go👍. The last is a Cherry auto from Bomb seeds that we’ve been trying to get to for months. Let’s just hope that she’s not a dud like the last bean.
The new digs for this run are courtesy MarsHydro👊. Their 2x4 single grow tent, paired with a shiny new 240w QB courtesy ViparSpectra.
These folks were kind enough to discuss a collaboration and as a result, here we are to test out the gear with an inaugural run of autos. Each week, we’ll try to expand on some of the benefits of each, as well as any limiting factors or considerations that need attention when pondering purchase.
Already I can say that both are high quality products in terms of overall craftsmanship.
MarsHydro 2x4 Grow Tent:
Excellent construction in terms of durability. Reinforced stitching on the zippers and corners ensures zero tearing. Conveniently placed screen vents and intake/exhaust ports. The ceiling exhaust port only exists on the right side. Perfect for me but not great if you’re running exhaust from the top on the left side (left side wall port makes up for this however). The aluminum frame is rigid enough to support the weight of the lights and accessories. Once you have some weight in the tent, she’s go’n nowhere and you can assemble and break it down in record time if moving or stashing the grow op.
Only limiting factors I’ve noticed is that temp. Control will be an issue for a tent. It just doesn’t have the same insulating ability as a wood cabinet or other permanent enclosed space. No worries, this is offset by a small desktop heater and keeps the environment exactly where desired. The other issue was a production problem - the ceiling vent was accidentally stitched into the corner seams on the assembly line. Again, no real issue - just pulled it out with no damage or fraying to the tent or port👍.

ViparSpectra 240w Quantum Board:
This thing is sleek and slick in terms of design. Closest comparable to it that I’ve seen would be spiderfarmers line of qbs. They feature the same top-o-the-line components and roughly similar spectrums. Where VS takes the advantage is in the convenience of the dimmer nob which is easily accessible and works great at 50% with no strobing👍. The heat sink is also larger which contributes to lower temps. That’s not a good thing in my case but beneficial for most folks.
I can already say that this will be a great fixture through all stages of growth. Where I know this light will excel will be in the veg. Stage for sure. Dimming function gives seedlings a much better chance of success with the ability to use lower lighting levels early on and the coverage area on a 240w is great. The average grower will find this panel suitable and fitting to their needs in a 2x4 grow space although I’d suggest 2 units if going any larger than that. The total output in this space equates to about 30w/sq.ft. Which is a decent amount of coverage based on power vs. Growprint. Ideal for veg. Certainly but, in flower - I tend to run closer to 50-60w/sq.ft to achieve higher yields. Again, similar fixtures have performed admirably in the past and while this wouldn’t be considered an “entry-level” fixture, I’d recommend that any grower new to the game not skimp on lighting and start with one of these. The price points are a great value for quality LED tech. These days, so there’s little reason to even consider a lesser fixture👍.
I have no detail on limiting factors for this light as yet but have heard that stock branded fixtures don’t necessarily incorporate enough red diodes. I’ve seen no issue myself but confess - I’m no lighting guru.

Happy to have you along for the ride if you made it this far through my opening rant!!😎🤟😎🤟😎
Inaugural week of veg. And we have all of em on the grow. The only one that’s raising concern is the cherry bomb. She’s look’n a little warped and deformed, generally unhappy. Still a little too early to tell but her prospects aren’t good. The rest are look’n great👍.
The whole res. Took about 3-4 days to fully stabilize the ph. Then this stoner realized that he forgot to recalibrate his ph pen... thankfully, no harm done and she’s stable as can be coming in to week 2. She drank about 10 litres over the last week, mostly in evap. And medium saturation I’d imagine. It’s perfect timing so that I can start to run my top off water at a higher nute concentration as these little ones get their legs. Still very light mixture while they’re small and only sitting at a tds of about 250ppm right now.
really excited to get to the training so that we can bear witness to how truly “plug ‘n play” this system is. When it comes down to it the whole thing is amazingly simple. All the PVC is dry fitted together using no glue. You’ll get some minor drips and drops for the first few days but once the mineral deposits in the water have run over the cracks a bit they start to seal any leaks themselves. The pots (and more importantly the liners) are another stroke of internet gardening genius. You’ve got a paint liner inside the plastic bucket, effectively acting like a smart pot that will air prune the roots before they bind around the inside of the bucket itself. At least that’s supposed to be the principle anyway. Each bucket is lined with black adhesive vinyl to block out all potential light leaks. In the end, sourcing all this kinda shit on Amazon is like death by a thousand cuts. Once you’re done with all the taping and BS, you might as well have bought the exact size and colour bucket you were looking for from uline or some other manufacturer. It really wasnt worth all the added agro. The stubs for each bucket maintain a reservoir of about 2-3” depth that gets cycled over for 30 minutes, twice a day. 3 times a day now that they’re starting to acclimate and grow. The stubs sit freely in the main drain line and are each sleeved with another 3/4” grommet to again, account for potential light leaks and keep that water running fresh👍. So far, the whole setup has been relatively seamless and easy. If we can squeeze out an entire cycle with only a couple of full res. Changes, I’ll have found a potential contender for fave grow method🙏🤞🙏. Until next week fam👊.

Week 2 of veg. And all’s proceeding as well as expected. The fastbuds are winners and already showing signs of slight nute deficiency. The lemon haze isn’t far behind those and should come on well over the next couple days. The Cherry Bomb... she must’ve suffered some sort of physical damage to her early leaves when in seed - they’ve come out all mangled and deranged. She could be a straight dud that gets pulled but we’ll give it another week to see what the growth rate is like and whether or not it might be worth keeping. Limited changes to talk about this week. We pumped out the main res. And put in a batch of fresh nute water with a significant increase in ratios. Twice as much feed for the base nute as they’re telling me they need it and added in an extra 10ml calmag base to be proactive. This has literally doubled the ppms in the res. So the TDS is now within typical norms for nute solution. We always start the nutes insanely light as it’s easier to add more than risk burning a sensitive seedling that’s on a time limit👍. It’ll be this week where we get to see some real measurable differences between this and a straight DWC. Lookn forward to the comparative😎. Until next week folks👊.
End of week update - the cheese is now showing slight signs of mag. And probably a little nitro deficiency. The nute mix is still pretty light so we ran a full change on the res. To pop the tds North of 600 (680 to be exact) with about double what was going in at the start of the week. She should come around and I’m not expecting the others to suffer from this. Alls good - just still feel’n out this new system👍😎.

Entering the third week of veg. And all of ‘Em are now pushing out pretty substantially. The growth spurt probably coincides with the tap roots having now reached the reservoir in each pot. The cheese started showing a combo of magnesium and nitrogen deficiencies midweek. Not surprising as we still had the nute concentration real low. In response we doubled out the base nute ratio and added 50% more calmag supplement which should clear this issue up in a week or so. Ph has been a bit of bitch to stabilize. Not that the range is off a whole bunch, just that it seems to continually creep up over a 24 hour period. Other than that, minimal top offs and the system has been easy peasy so far. We started LST at the end of this week. Without it, plant height could definitely be an issue. Might consider a fim on the lemon haze but the Gorilla Cookies and Cheese will be left alone. Diddo on the Cherry Bomb which is a straight up freak show. Since she popped she’s shown off leaf variegation, whorled phillotaxy, fan leaf mutations, the whole range of silliness. Despite this, she’s still actually growing and keeping up with the others. We were this close to pull’n er earlier in the week. Now, we’ll let er live and see what she does. Pistils are kickn out on all of ‘em so hopefully the stretch isn’t too far off👍😎. Until next week y’all, Peace!👊

End of week 4 of veg. And all have entered transition with the exception of the lemon haze. We got the nutrient deficiency under control this past week with an increase in both calmag. And base nutes. Problem is that the TDS still needs to increase pretty substantially and it’ll take almost double the current ratios to get it there. It’s just not cost effective to run botanicare in this system. Especially when we’ll need it for the summer outdoor. We’ve moved over to the GHE Maxi series of granular nutes for the sake of being more economical. It’s night and day between these two brands in terms of required quantities and botanicare has always been great for soil and coco grows so why fight it right😎👍.
The plant run down is a mixed bag of everything. The Gorilla Cookies is developing without issue. A little bushier than preferred so, as usual, we selectively clipped a couple larger fan leaves to expose the stretching branches underneath. The cheese is a straight winner all around. We held off the nitro amd mag. Def. but she’s still a little pale and getting only juuuuuuust enough to keep her stretching like mad as we move into transition. The Lemon Haze is slower, still in veg. And not yet hit the transition. That’ll probably be this week and she’s started to show signs of a cal. Def. we’ll bump the calmag slightly for this weeks res. Change and see if it clears up. The Cherry Bomb.... a sad disappointment. This poor thing should’ve gotten pulled early. She has yet to pop a full, un-deformed set of fans leaves, already entered well into flower and has all the hallmarks of a defunct plant that’s trying to stretch and ripen all at the same time. I give er 50/50 as to whether or not she starts throw’n out nanners at this point. We’ll have to watch this one closely.
Unfortunately, autos move too fast to be able to slowly increase nute ratios and tds through regular res. top offs. They’re drinking much more but still not enough to allow for definitive corrections over the course of a week. We’ve had to change out res. Water every 7-10 days or so. Even if this is the norm it’s still super easy with a shop vac. - 5 minutes to new solution and a further pump cycle of 15 minutes to mix well throughout the system. Couldn’t be happier about this👌😎👌😎.
Next week’ll be the start of the flower countdown. Lookn forward to seeing some pistils shoot👍🤞.

End of the first week of flower and big changes all around. Couple system related reports to start.
- you can see that plant development is leaning to the Center which means that despite the mylar, this XS2000 doesn’t quite have the spread for this size space. Don’t get me wrong here, great fixture but 2 in this space would be absolutely perfect.
- ph levels have been a daily adjustment but usually only regulated through top-offs. Convenient, and a sign of a stable culture within the mediums.
- looks like we’ve got a leak developing on the cherry Bomb bucket. No idea where it’s come from but it’ll have to rectified quickly. Served me right for cheaping out with the crappy buckets and I’m paying a price for this now.
The systems is otherwise terrific and growth has just exploded into the stretch. The cheese is well ahead of everyone and the gorilla cookies is holding its own as well. The lemon haze is being a douche of a plant. We jacked the calmag by 7mls and she’s still showing cal def. well bring it up a little more on the next change but not much. The others don’t seem to need it so it’ll be a bit of a delicate balance here. The Cherry Bomb is doing what she can to make something of herself which is nice but in my minds eye it’s already a failed plant.
All told things are proceeding as expected and the plants took the nute change really well. Now it’s just constant trimming and tying for the next couple weeks while we roll through the stretch. Alls extremely well peeps. Seeya on the next update👊.
Background/Repetitive Nonsense

End of the second week of stretch and we gonna have some height problems I think. Both the cheese and the gorilla cookies took off like stink this week and you can see it in the photos. The GC is frosting out heavy already and while not nearly as big as the cheese, she’s got it where it counts on the trich. Development. The cheese is just a monster - still amazed that this plant is only in a 2 gal. Bucket. She’s growing like she’s in a 7gal smart pot🤩🤩🤩. The lemon haze continues to have issues with calcium deficiency. She’s growing alright and has stretched quite a bit given the challenges being crowded out by the cheese. Still suffering from calcium def. and no real signs of abating either. The cherry Bomb is droop’n out at the tips but otherwise still flowering and not herming so that’s good i guess. All told the system is running on point and 2 of 4 beans are proving just how effective a system it is. Truly the growth results of dwc with the manageability of traditional pots. The big time saver here is the stand-alone res. Just too easy managing nutes and solution at one spot. Haven’t even touched the res. For cleaning purposes either and she’s been generally perfect conditions since week 2. Only drawback is that I can’t manage severe nutrient differences between strains. But, given how calmag hungry the lemon haze is, I wouldn’t be able to add in much more than I am already.

Welp, we’re through the third week of the stretch and what a cluster fuck of a week it was🙄. First, all the plants needed a big trim back and after I moved Em the grommet holes on the buckets gave out on 2 of the 4 creating a slow leak. Serves me right for going cheap on the buckets but I am glad I bought 5 of Em now. Was able to patch up and silicone the fuck outta the broken one so that I could use it for transplanting each one at a time over like 2 days. Leakage issue resolved and all that remains is figuring out the crazy severe calmag def. on the lemon haze. Also starting to see slight signs of this on the cheese as well so, we’ve upped the calmag by another 10ml/10L. That’s quite a bit of calmag and we’re kinda in uncharted territory at this point. All other elements look good - it’s just workn out kinks on this new system to dial things in properly. Won’t be a picture perfect grow but this tent is gonna put out some bud for sure👍😎👍😎

Week 4 of flower in the books and the stretch has mercifully tapered off while the buds start to stack up. Good thing to because we’re essentially out of head room now and there’s a good chance we end up torching some of the larger colas on the cheese. Super cropping was considered but ultimately declined for the sake of experimentation. At least this way, we’ll know what the stress test is like for clearance on the vipar during future grows - you’d be surprised how close you can get to some these fixtures.
The added calmag does appear to be paying dividends and the lemon haze is showing signs of accelerated growth which is good to see. Overall, the results on the system to date have been great. Only issue is continued leakage from these crappy buckets which are all failing below the grommet holes. I’ve been fixing and transplanting one at a time since the last week - again, just another lesson learned for the next run. But a right pain in the ass nonetheless. They’re pack’n on the weight now and should be a great finish👍😎👍😎.

Week #5 of flower in the books and it’s been yet another busy week. All the buckets have sprung leaks and every one of em has now been fixed permanently. A little silicon goes a long way. Other than that, the systems still doing what it needs to and aside from the buckets - make’n it easy👍. Pretty impressive that we’re seeing similar growth results in a 2gal Dutch bucket that would be expected of a 5gal. Dwc bucket. Kinda tells you that big plant science isn’t entirely reserved for those with a lot of space. We could absolutely Jack out the right strain in a system like this one. Can’t wait to see what the results will be with the upcoming 1gal. Run. We did end up giving the res. An in place cleaning last week. Essentially just a shop vac of the standing water and solids, then gave it a rinse with diluted peroxide to kill off any non-bennies in the tank. So far, no full cleaning and limited water changes - a big shift for a guy like me, I usually run almost completely sterile.
As far as the plants are concerned..... well, that depends on which plant we’ve got running. The cherry Bomb has always been lagging and deformed but at least she’s putting out some buds and there’s no hermie issue. She’s showing weird leaf issues at the top right now but that could honestly be anything given how wonky she’s been from the start. The Lemon Haze is somewhat similar - a little stunted due to deficiency and crowding but otherwise ok. The calmag issue with her was addressed last week via a very heavy ratio and the whole system is currently on a 48 hour flush until we change out the res. With a reduced nute mix. The Gorilla Cookies was the earliest to frost and by all accounts she looks to be the most resinous. This plants taken everything that’s been thrown at it - pretty low maintenance in comparison to the rest. The Cheese has realized some of what I feared last week about the heavy calmag. Upper leaves starting to show signs of burning. She’s a behemoth in comparison to the others and a testament to stable genetics. She’s a little slower to develop too but expected to finish stronger 👍😎👍. Now that we’re through the stretch I’m expecting the nute requirements in general will drop somewhat as we move toward ripening. Honestly - pretty damn solid for an inaugural run on a new system👍. We’re happy... for now😉.

Through week 6 of flower which means we’ve got about 3 weeks before the finish. Sadly, the last week has been one of ill timed misfortune. After bumping the calmag to offset a deficiency with the lemon haze we created an entirely new problem of burn and lockout across the rest of them. If that wasn’t problematic enough, our tds meter also shit the bed at some point too. As a result, getting a clear picture of the levels in the res. Hasn’t been possible and we’re struck being reactive based on what the plant leaves are showing. Results:
Lemon Haze: we definitely solved the calmag issue.... at the expense of the health of the other 3 plants. She’s looking better than she ever has and expect she’ll finish out well. Small though. I’m left to wonder if the calmag issue is more a strain stability issue. No plant should ever need this much calmag supplementation.
Cherry Bomb: she’s suffered from stunted seedling growth, deformities as well as light burn. With the added calmag she’s showing cal toxicity in the top leaves and a little burn. Rest of the plant appears fine.
Cheese: this one locked out pretty heavy. When we saw it start to advance on the leaf tips we ran a flush on the system for about 48 hours. Her larger fans took the brunt of it and I think we caught it in time but no way to know until the finish at this point.
Gorilla Cookies: what a champ - a little bit of calmag toxicity like the cherry Bomb but nothing overly concerning from a development perspective. She’s a bit of a wonky donkey in terms of structure and not really similar to other phenos I’ve seen on here. We know not to judge though - she looks an awful lot like a ducks-footed sugar breath we grew out last year that was absolute 🔥. 🤞she lives up to the comparison.
They’re on a significantly reduced nute ratio right now and hopefully, we haven’t done any lasting damage prior to harvest. Other issue is how well the system has worked - the main cola on the cheese has predictably began to foxtail and it may get pretty bad by the end of the cycle. Either way, guess these issues should be expected when ur running a new system. In my haste to find a ratio sweet spot I overdid it. At least we know the ceilings now as well as the potential variability across multiple strains feeding from the same res. Fingers crossed it’s not a complete dud of a grow🤞. We really didn’t need a lockout issue on this run😒.

Week 7 of flower in the books and we’ve had to adjust to the height issues in an attempt to salvage what we can of the largest mains on the cheese. Really should’ve done this 2 weeks ago and while it’d be preferable not to supercrop this late in flower - there really wasn’t a choice. It was done early in the week and the plant is none the worse for wear. On the whole, the nute burn issue has been rectified and while the damage isn’t massive, it’s still really obvious. For all the above reasons, We’re really not going to get that late flower look with this plant. Kinda sad there. Otherwise, the plants have begun to colour up and were quickly coming in to the harvest window. At this rate it looks like the gorilla cookies and cherry Bomb will go off first, with the cheese to follow and the lemon haze last. The GC is absolutely covered in trichs. We expect a great finish for this one. She’s unlike any pheno I’ve seen on here - ducksfooted with a pineapple shape to her heads but again, got it where it counts. The cherry Bomb is similar but also true to her description - huge cherry diesel scent coming off this plant. She’s chunky and sticky too so very pleased she’s made something of herself. The lemon haze is developing And rounding out slower. Trich production is moderate and I suspect she’s got a week longer than the rest. We’re getting there - maybe a week to 10 days. Almost time for jazz hands👍😎.
Background/Repetitive Nonsense
Week 8 of flower is in the books and this show is quickly coming to an end. I said last week we had about 7-10 days and I was spot on at the 10 day mark. I was only wrong about the order. The cheese is ready to chop before the rest and the gorilla cookies, cherry Bomb and lemon haze will follow in due course. The cheese is a beast and it’ll take a little time to get it all run through the bowl trimmer. At least the big one goes first. Her tallest colas have foxtailed like mar, despite the late supercrop. You can tell where the sweet spot for the light is at about 10” distance from the canopy. Any closer than that and the tails begin to show prominently. It’s a good example of just how close you can get to these fixtures with a little bit of prior experience. It’s been noted for the next run😎👍😎. The res. is on an h2o2 only flush for the remainder until the rest are ready to come down. Not a moment too soon either - the pollen chucking project has stalled out waiting for these girls to finish and now that we’ll have a little extra room, we can start running our cuts in the aerocloner🤟. Not long at all now folks. Thanks for tagging along through all this. Learned a bunch about this system and we’re back to hardware mode to make some serious improvements for the next run🤙😎. I love hardware mode😉.

We got what we expected from this run but the huge yield and incredible growth rate of this strain was entirely unexpected. Out of a 2gallon bucket this kind of result is unbelievable. She was put on a 10 day dry and jarred up with humidipaks. The terp profile hasn’t come out at all yet so we’ll have to wait and see on the cure. The high is about standard and as expected for a straight cheese. I’d grow it again under slightly different conditions for sure.
Week 9 in the books and we still have 3 going strong after taking down the cheese. She seemed to round out a little faster while these have stalled out somewhat and trichs aren’t quite where we want them yet. Can’t imagine this’ll take much longer - days at the most. At least we’ve got a little room to get some cuts under the light. We dropped out the spiderfarmer to facilitate a slightly better environment for the clones - tents now showing off some versatility👍. Alls well and finish fast approaching👏.

She was mutant with ducksfooted leaves, not like any of the phenos I’ve seen but for the really nice purple colouring in late flower. Stellar trich. Production all the way through the plant. Overall a super easy grow👍.
Overall she was weak. Just a dud auto seed that didn’t get the great start that all autos need. She still grew out and coulda been salvageable if not for the issues we encountered during the cycle. All told - I’d consider trying this again for the scent profile alone but were off autos for awhile now so unknown when we get around to it. Either way - quality testing still to come.
Funny how things work out. I almost completely trashed every other plant in the grow trying to rectify a calmag issue with this one. While the others suffered this girl actually turned out half decent👍. The yield is expected to be low but I have high hopes for some quality smoke from this plant. Her predominant drawback is that I’m thinkn the genetic is still a little unstable. Calmag issues all the way through and no plant should need the amounts that this one took. Any hoo - full details to follow.
