My main concern at the start of the week was the continuing faint mildew smell. I quickly found a new problem to worry about though. While closely inspecting buds for any sign of bud rot or the source of the mildew smell, I discovered my smallest plant had turned hermaphrodite. I found 2 sets of 3 nanners on the main cola, a couple nodes down from the top. I contemplated trying to cut them off and continue on until I discovered another 2 sets on another node. So I turned the fans off, threw a garbage bag over it, and chopped her down and took her out. It galls me because this was the smallest runt plant that I should have gotten rid of weeks ago. I knew it wasn't going to produce much, it was taking up valuable space and it wasn't worth the effort or nutrients to keep going. But I got greedy and figured what the hell, let's see how it turns out. Now it might have screwed up the rest of my crop. Hard lesson learned. Its difficult to say if the nanners pollinated anything. I'm sure that I found them with 24 hours of them showing, but I've heard that nanners can pollinate before they're even visible. Many of the buds on surrounding plants have some brown pistils or tips of pistils. I've heard this can be a sign of pollination, but they've pretty much been brown since they came out. So we'll see. I'm definitely continuing this on to the end. If I end up with a crop of seeds, then so be it. I also found a fungus gnat on a sticky card, but so far its the only one I've caught. I've been allowing more dry out time so hopefully that's helping. The buds are still piling on. I'm figuring at least 4 weeks left, but I don't know what to expect at this point, 25 days from the appearance of pisitils.

Grow Questions

If a plant turns hermaphrodite because of stress (not a light leak), does the stress have to immediately precede the hermming? Or could the stress that causes it have occurred weeks earlier during veg, even though it seems to recover?

Light leaking IS stress. But yes, stress induced weeks prior (since that stress isn't a single event, it has gradual, systemic effects coz it's conditional, environmental, nutrition, etc) can make plants hermi later than when the stress was induced (and the hormonal balance gradually shifts).

Its a genetic problem in theory but light leaks will not help or disturbing their night cycle that's why I fill the grow room with green light so if any light were to get in it cant stress your ladies :) though even that is not enough sometimes i had 15 plants show bananas recently it was heart breaking but I know it was down to genetics because any light getting in would of been green and not effected them in anyway so its near enough impossible but to be sure I always try and test my tent between grows by sitting in to and looking for any light I can see protuding in if i can see any I will block it with tape or block it with somekind of stuffing. thats the best you can do though growing strains that you know dont herm is a good start so basically just strains you have grew before that had a good harvest and didnt herm lol

Looks good to me. Sometimes those first set of leaves are just too big for the stem at first and they get a little wavy. Now your runoff... that's an issue. What kind of meter are you using? Is it the same meter for both intake & runoff? With numbers like that, it should correct itself after a healthy feeding. Next time, I'd saturate heavily with 50 % runoff and make sure you're whole medium is receiving nutrients. It's CoCo. Hard to overwater, and in your case, it's not receiving the nutrients well, and it's all about making sure the plant can eat what you're feeding it. I'd also recommend switching to an airpot. Better breathing and airflow.

@kansasscott725, I'm just hang feeding, no reservoir. I didn't know anything about it other than Dr. Coco suggested it as a surfactant replacement for SM90. Would it be useful in a CalMag foliar mix that would be sprayed? You're right on, I've been pretty much following the cocoforcannabis blueprint. I wanted something I could follow beginning to end for my first time, instead of trying to amalgamate all the youtube and podcast info I was absorbing into a Frankenstein of my own. I've seen a lot of people using the Cocos A&B that you're using, and I've since heard a lot of bad things about general hydroponics corporate overlords. I'll be looking to switch things up next grow or when the nutes run out. Seeing that your feeding EC is so high and my plants are showing some deficiencies, I'm wondering if I'm being too conservative and that's what led to the damage. Definitely your results are showing that you have things dialed in.

@Paulbearer1891, Glad to see things are turning around. With 80% runoff, makes sense the numbers were so low, you were essentially flushing everytime you fed. Your EC will fluctuate. So long as your Runoff is no more than 200 points higher, you're good. Question: Do you have a reservoir or are you manually mixing in gallon jugs, then pouring? I only ask because Yucca is only necessary for reservoirs. Your feeding line reminds me of the cocoforcannabis high frequency fertigation chart. I based my whole grow on those methods, but I added in the House & Garden nutrient line. My starting EC can get to almost 2.02 but when you feed in coco multiple times a day, the heavy nutes are freshly administered, and the girls will continue to thrive. Change its feeding from a lot to a little or add in sudden variables...that's when you'll run into issues.

@kansasscott725, Thanks for taking a look. I'm using the same meter to measure EC and making sure its in the same mode. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll do that for the next watering. I also have some 1 gallon fabric transplanted pots coming tomorrow so hopefully a transplant will help. More roots are showing at the bottom so I think we're about good to move them. Your advice is much appreciated, enjoy your weekend.

To each his own... Whatever you do with watering in CoCo, be consistent and don't let it dry up. I would definitely water every day in coco in the fashion you are because essentially you're giving it a mini flush with steady nutrients everytime. If you water every 2 days then switch it back to one day or even multiple times a day, you'll have some salt build up and even potential lock outs. I'd dial back that Armor Si to 1.5 ml per gallon as well and make sure you're adding that first before anything else. Shake it up and let it dissolve for 10 min or so. Then add your Cal Mag (dial down to 4 ml) repeat, then add your base nutes. Add Diamond Nectar second to last ( also dial down a bit) You're additives are stronger than your base. Never worked with Rapid Start before, but add that last after Diamond Nectar according to the good Doctor. 8 ML Additive to 5ML Base tells me something is off. Dial down, feed everyday when lights come on. If EC raises more than 300 points from intake to drainage, increase your fertigations.

@Paulbearer1891, Yes. His chart is 1000% for High Frequency Fertigation. Last year it took me nearly 3 months to get in veg what I had in 3 weeks this time around. I always love the beginning and then I'm ridiculously exhausted by the end. Never ever again will I grow multiple plants (especially different strains) with high frequency fertigation. But I never missed a day and have made this far so why stop now. Next time, I'm going to grow just one Girl Scout Cookie and find the right feed for it ( seemed to like GH Floral line ). My hope is to stretch to fill my entire 4x5 space. With one plant, I'll really be able trust the auto timer for feeding as it should be relatively the same every day. After that, I think it's DWC time. I'm loving your grow. Now that you're feeding twice a day, just stick to the plan. If ya need help setting up auto system like Doc has on his page with the auto draining saucers, just follow the script. Best investment I ever made. I just πŸ”Œ the sub pump in and unplug 5 minutes later and voila! That's it. Every few days, I dump the drainage bucket that sits outside the tent. Makes watering multiple times per day a piece of cake.

@kansasscott725, Right on, my inconsistency is my biggest issue. And I think Dr. Coco's nute schedule is more for a higher frequency watering then I've been doing. I'll make those adjustments you recommend. I've also moved up to his late Veg mix the past few days, which brings the base levels up some (2.5/2.5/1.2) but I hadn't ever considered the proportion of base nutes to supplements, thanks for pointing that out. I have to keep an eye on the important stuff, and not that CalMag isn't, but I've clearly had something going on with N/P/K being low. Looking at what I've just posted, I don't think I did it justice with how bad some of the older fan leaves got damaged. And I've definitely got the lights cranked at 100% these days, I was scared I was burning them earlier but they seem to like light! Who'd have thought? Thanks as always for your help. Edit-and I've been watering twice a day now, no matter what. But I add the water slower and in intervals so I'm approaching the runoff point with better control. Before I was dousing until suddenly a ton of runoff would be pouring out, until it was 40-50% of inflow. Its a learning experience for sure!
