Well I don't see anything popping through the soil yet so can't really say what the germination rate is yet. Hopefully I can edit this week after 1 or both seeds pop up.
For those that plant straight into the soil. How long does it typically take to pop and when do you decide that a seed has failed and either plant another or pull that pot from the grow area?
Been growing directly in soil for 35+ years and rate it as the best method - no transplant stress and nutrients immediately.
Fresh seeds 2- 5 days, older seeds 4-7 days, anything longer than 10 days are rubbish seeds.
You must keep the soil moist the WHOLE time, any drying out for a day or two will be disastrous.
Covering the soil with shade cloth or light cotton fabric can help prevent the surface of the soil drying out, but check for the seedling emerging often (soil rising up) and remove any covering as soon as this occurs. Do not in any circumstances cover your pots with cling film or a plastic bag, this will "suffocate" your seeds and possibly lead to fungal/mould problems due to excessive humidity.
Normally, if they haven't emerged after 6 days, I am ready to plant replacement seeds.
Planting between the day after the New Moon and until the end of the first quarter of the lunar cycle, can help with germination and is a method I swear by for 25+ years.

Seeds popped on tuesday/Wednesday and are already 2 inches tall. They are looking healthy and have a second set of true leaves starting already. Very excited to see how these do compared to my first grow.
They grew to 9 and 8 inches tall and really filled out this week.
Pics from last week to this week are 8 days apart.
I turned on the flowering light since I noticed a few white hairs developing.
I also cut off the lowest leaves that were not getting a ton of light and basically sitting in the dirt. I did wait one day to long this week to water them so they drooped overnight so I watered them in the morning and when I got back from work they were already looking good as new.
I'm horrible about keeping up with this blog/diary. Anyways I'm at the harvesting stage so I've given them their last watering and shut off the lights.
I'll be cutting them down in 2 days and starting the drying process.
I trimmed off all the smallest buds a few days ago so my wife could get a taste test ahead of time.
She says is strong and does the trick for her anxiety and pain.

Thanks for the response. Whybdo you recommend complete darkness during germination in soil? If planted outside they wouldn't get that so was wondering what the reasoning on that is.
