I typically trim most of the lower leaves as they don't receive much light anyway. Photoperiod plants can handle a lot of stress so I usually go ham on them and strip the bottom 1/3rd of the plant of all leaves, bud sites, and small branches that won't get any light. With autos I don't strip as much from the bottom of the plant, mostly just some fan leaves here and there that aren't doing anything. I do highly recommend at least tucking the leaves at the top of the plant that are blocking potential bud sites from receiving light. Pruning those same leaves won't really hurt the plant. Photoperiods bounce back from heavy defoliation pretty quickly. Autos are more prone to being stunted by stress so it is a good idea to go slow when cutting any leaves off the plant. I can't imagine not doing some sort of overall defoliation though. The plants get so dense and busy that if you don't do something to allow light to reach further in the plant, the lower buds won't develop nearly as well. On top of that humidity will be higher and harder to manage and there is a higher risk of rot and mold. Feel free to message me if you need more help! Good luck!
