don't buy expensive fertilizer. I spend about $0.04 per gallon and it is top-shelf quality. To achieve a cost like that you have to buy 25lbs bags, though... Even so, don't overspend on the smaller quantities... never but something with a cartoon graphic on label and i'd avoid "pot brands" except for a couple that are reputable. they all overcharge, otherwise.
Find a 2 or 3-part that provides everything.. .even if it says "for hydroponics". Get something that is dry that you mix - saves money and easier storage -- preferably, but if all other boxes are checked, this is fine too.
Check out rollitup.com forums for old posts on nutrient forumlas and such... calculate out ppms and you can know for sure if what you are buying is "good" or at least gets you in the ballpark to make soem easy adjustments with trial and error over time.
you want more than 1 part, because you can adjust various ratios of nutrients.. 1-part all you can do is dilute it or make it more concentrated... that won't always solve a problem.
