And keep the phone at least 10cm away from the focus point so it will actually focus

If using a smartphone just hold it steady and try not to be too close. For close ups to check trichromes there are free apps such a Magnifying Glass which work for me.

Use your phone, clean your lens, take the picture in the dark with the flash on. That's all you need to know really. Most modern phones have better cameras than actual cameras.
