figure the white hairs are more correlative than causal.. Trichome colors are directly related to the chemical THC and how it breaks down into a less psychoactive molecule (amber color indicates this process of entropy that is inevitable).
The trichomes are what matters... stigmata are a good 2nd indicator to help, but some strains will stay very white all the way until the end. Only after harvest do they change colors.
So, get a 30-60x jewelers loupe, currency checker or a fancy digital microscope you can wirelessly connect to your phone etc etc etc... $7 and up... Don't look at trichomes on a leaf. Only trichomes on a bract/calyx. Inspect multiple locations in the canopy -- multiple depths.. you'll see the top ones mature faster. This is the "art" portion of the choice and it involves personal preference and perceptions.... How much amber? you can google for 1,000 slightly varied opinions, but you'll need some trial and error to find your personal preference.
10-70% amber? usually the range you see... there's no science on that portion... no reputable research, anyway.
How you grow can impact it too.. e.g. i'm trying to prune in a way that maximizes top colas to other buds proprtions. I care more about the trichomes at the top and less so deeper into canopy... the stuff below is <1/4th of my yield, hopefully. i'm not going to care much for that small portion of lower quality nugs as i do at the top. The bigger bushes i've grown before i cared more about that type of nug as it was a large portion of yield. So, not only your preferences on taste and effect of the high, but also how you go about growing it will impact what is best for you...
