Cutting with something sharp is far better than leaving a jagged wound caused by tearing pieces off.
If you are super keen, you should also sterilize the cutting implement before cutting/topping the plant. Methylated Spirits is good for sterilizing, so too is a flame.

Cola growing again after to much light while flowering?In the last 2 weeks of flowering this plant seems to have started to grow at the top of the cola again.
