Personally, I remove the bottom 2 / first 2 branches closest to the soil, (at the first knot/node) as they usually grow rather weakly. I also prefer to have 8-10 growing branches, so topping at either the fifth or sixth knot/node is my preferred method, remembering the first/lowest node will have no branches with the method I employ. Tying the branches down in a radial pattern outward from the main stem, once they grow long enough, will also limit height and increase the yield too. Hope this helps,..... Organoman.

Topping can be done once there is 5 - 6 nodes. Fimming can be done with there is 3 - 5 nodes as the stress is not as great. Once done either process give your plant 2 weeks to recover before performing another. The below article I found was informative with great detail and pictures regarding both processes. https://www.cocoforcannabis.com/topping-cannabis-plants-why-when-how/ I personally topped mine at the 6th node when I had 12 nodes so that I could clone my clipping, as I'm not proficient in cloning yet 😁 Great Luck & Happy Growing 🍃

By knots you're referring to nodes. A node grows on each leaf. Ide count 5 leaves up and remove the top. Resulting in 10 branches growing. In this photo. The next set of leaves growing out the top are your 5th nodes. Wait until these new leaves grow out and remove the top above it. And you'll have a nice bushy plant in no time.
