Personally, I remove the bottom 2 / first 2 branches closest to the soil, (at the first knot/node) as they usually grow rather weakly.
I also prefer to have 8-10 growing branches, so topping at either the fifth or sixth knot/node is my preferred method, remembering the first/lowest node will have no branches with the method I employ. Tying the branches down in a radial pattern outward from the main stem, once they grow long enough, will also limit height and increase the yield too.
