This leafy boi has grown bushy. What training methods do you recommend? Should I just tie down to the side? should I defoliate the fan leaves covering new growth?

Can’t edit my answer, so I’ll drop another one. Another idea would be to leave those lower branches, and as she grows up, remove the tiny little “sucker branches” that form on those lower branches. That will help those branches to stretch out further for better light, as they mature. A bigger, more mature branch, has a much high production potential than smaller newly developed ones. (for obvious reasons- bigger and more capable). So further developing the branches that you have and then lolipop the branches except leave the leaves if you can and just pinch the suckers. If your growing indoors, I’d start building your canopy as to train all the growing branch tips towards an even height at the top to maximize on the efficiency of your lighting. Plus the best bud development happens near all the tips where hormone concentrations are highest.

Well, if you have a little plant that is bushing out, getting dense, remember it has a ways to grow. So you can remove lower branches in a fashion as to prevent interior growth. Doing this however is only suggested for photoperiod plants with still plenty of Veg time. New branches will form as she grows up, except hopefully these branches provide outward growth instead of interior growth that further compacts the plant and inhibits airflow. I try to keep all my interiors empty as I only get small sickly growth on the insides. Little popcorn buds and such. Indoors there is usually a canopy, and all the “interior growth” would be stuff below the canopy. Looks like you have plenty of potential for new branch development if she’s a photoperiod still early in Veg. Happy growing!

Man, it IS bushy! But you haven't linked it to a diary so I don't even know how old it is or whether it's a photo or an auto... I will err on the side of caution and tell you I would recommend just tucking those big boys under and out of the way - keeping them on the plant will help the plant continue to grow. There IS a time and place for defoliation, especially on a plant that is as bushy ... if you MUST defoliate, take only the fan leaves that are growing in toward the main cola and don't take too many of them at once. It's a bit stressful and so shouldn't be repeated but MAYBE once a week... Alternatively, you could LST them - tie them down and out of the way (some of the larger leaves I've tried to tuck away refuse to stay where I put them so I end up tying them down). Usually, LST refers to what you do with stems that have lots of bud sites - but I've done the same damn thing with big ass leaves... they just block too much light! Good luck! I LOVE bushy plants.... until they're in flower and you need lots of good air flow (that's when I start to do some defoliation!)
