I place a wire at the very bottom opposite of the wire that holds down the top. Then you aren't pulling on the roots.

Not quite, you're looking to get about a 75-90 deg. Bend in the plant. Might wait for another set of leaves to go before bending her.

Rate my LSTThird round of topping. Trying to bend the branches in the usual way so "pulling down", the "Y split" in the topping sites always break/open. So I'm trying this way with ropes and engraved sticks to PUSH the branches away from the inside. What do you think? Alternatives? -DD
